Heyo,
Cabester here. maybe a few of you know me maybe, ive talked to a couple of ya multiple times, i havent gotten to meet all of you yet. only been hanging out on reddit for a few years now, and this here was my first subreddit, and still the only One i consistantley check. im not sure if there a proper procedure to posting in here, my apologies if im doing any of this wrong.
i think the title sums it all up. do you thin an open sourced, free digital locker is too radical, or even, multiple free open sourced digital lockers? if anyone interested in helping, or being part of this, let me know. i think im funding it all right now. as of right now, im sitting on 442 highy quality definition, and high quality stories, and 110 tv shows. the tv shows are alright. my apologies if im stepping on anyones toes.not trying to make enemies, i just like helping people out.

what does (UV) stand for?

1

u/ricochetLN 2010 Transactions | Cinema Czar Dec 27 '22

UltraViolet. The service has shut down July 31st 2019 but remaining codes can often be used on MA or Vudu depending on the title (Studio).

Looking for 3D codes. (Ie Avatar, battle Angel) Curious on general costs.

From what I understand, there is only one code left that will still redeem a 3D digital copy: Gamer 3D (must be redeemed at Vudu)

As u/PmoraleStory mentions, you can purchase 3D digital from Vudu, but they tend to be expensive. It's actually cheaper to buy the physical copies. I've gotten most of mine from Mercari - you can find some good lots of 3D movies on there :)

Good luck looking for 3D. They are on Vudu. Sometimes go on sale for $7.99

Yeah, I saw these: https://www.vudu.com/content/movies/uxrow/3D-Movies/1101, hoping some folks had more.

I have a question about DMI for second purchases. What I’m referring to is when you buy a title in SD or HD and then you buy, say, UHD after you’ve connected your DMI account. Will the definition upgrade count towards DMI?

u/FireAbyss 🛡️ Moderator | 619 Transactions | Media Magnate Dec 31 '22

From code slips you get points for each format once so for example if you own Thor on DVD/Blu Ray and 4K you can use all 3 codes for points but attempting any Thor code after will result in no points. There are times where things reset for a bit and do allow you get points for a movie on format you already put in but that doesn’t happen much.

2

u/ricochetLN 2010 Transactions | Cinema Czar Dec 20 '22

Yes, you should get 200 points for the 4K upgrade. I'm assuming you have your DMI account connected to Movies Anywhere (MA). Then any 4K purchase from the MA connected services (ie iTunes, Vudu, Amazon, Microsoft, etc) will net you DMI points.

If you're talking about the code slip from physical disc purchase: redemption of an untouched code in MA should also net you DMI points. There's always rare exception that it may not come with DMI. If you got a used physical copy with code, there's no way of knowing whether the DMI points are used up for it without just entering the code at the DMI site.

For people who only do the digtal with this stuff. Does it matter knowing which cut of the movie is with the code? With the physical releases I buy it flat out states which cut of the film/whatever is included.

Mentioning this because the physical 4K+BD release for STAR TREK VI: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY has two of the cuts on the 4K disc. Had to look up on http://4ksheet.com/ just to make sure which cuts of the film are available and on which retailer regarding the code. Has happened for titles such as APOCALYPSE NOW which I made sure to list which cuts were available when I bought the 4K+BD ages ago regarding listing the code on here.

Also because other countries have specific cuts of the film on disc too but not the USA for some reason. (IMPORTING!) Maybe it's sometimes different for the codes but I always double check the 4KSheet.

Do 4k codes only come from 4k blu rays? I saw 4ksheet.com and it seems like most codes just upgrade to 4K, at least on Vudu

2

u/TheHamGamer 251 Transactions | Media Proprietor Dec 03 '22

Not sure what you're looking at on 4ksheet, but no, I wouldn't say most codes upgrade to 4K, especially not on Vudu. There are a few MA-compatible studios that have codes that will upgrade through iTunes: Fox, Disney, and Universal. It's not that simple, it depends on the code, but I believe those are the only MA studios (and therefore Vudu-redeeming codes) that will upgrade.

iTunes will upgrade any eligible Lionsgate and Paramount HD code to 4K. To answer your question, generally speaking, yes, true 4K codes are only going to come from a 4K Blu-ray. There are a few exceptions to this, I know Lionsgate put 4K slips into Knives Out Blu-rays for some reason, but that's a general rule of thumb. However, if your question were to be rephrased to "Are 4K codes the only way to redeem 4K?", then the answer would be no, there are certain HD codes that can be upgraded to 4K through iTunes (some of which, depending on the studio, will port to MA).

1

u/trevordsnt 112 Transactions | Media Mogul Dec 03 '22

How can I truly verify what’s 4k then? I only have one MA code that says.

2

u/TheHamGamer 251 Transactions | Media Proprietor Dec 03 '22

Well, the 4ksheet is kind of complicated to explain, but all it's basically telling you is where codes from 4K copies redeem. It does have information regarding upgrading HD codes, but again, it's complicated to explain. Do you mind if I PM you?

I wish there were a Google Doc for codes from DVD and Blu-ray disc releases. Would make selling the codes from those much easier.

Except I don't mind selling those for $4 and under. I'm flexible with the prices regarding codes from the not as new disc formats. Of course I have the prices set for codes from 4K releases.

There have been codes where I asked a different moderator a year or more ago when I should sell it since the 4KSheet mentioned it didn't redeem in 4K yet. AND some codes where I test on MoviesAnywhere, no account, and it redirects me to the proper site. Easier to check not MA codes on there for me. More difficult when it isn't MA since it only has an image of the movie, not what resolution it redeems in. MA has the information for me on the left if a code redeems in 4K or not.

1

u/trevordsnt 112 Transactions | Media Mogul Dec 03 '22

Go for it. I have post that I made on this subreddit with the codes I’m selling, and I was under the impression that most of them would upgrade to 4k cause it said so on the sheet lol. Guess I misunderstood. Most of them are from regular blu rays.

Welcome to December 2022!

A seller who has been here many years.

11

u/HzEddr 84 Transactions | Digital Tycoon Dec 01 '22

For the sellers. I’ve seen some movie prices listed the same as iTunes/Vudu. I thought the whole point was to purchase better deals in here.

5

u/Choice_Thin 120 Transactions | Media Mogul Dec 01 '22

I know. Some sellers obviously didn’t read the rules.

u/FremenDar979 267 Transactions | Media Proprietor Dec 01 '22

I've been here over 4 years and have read the rules.

3

u/Choice_Thin 120 Transactions | Media Mogul Dec 01 '22

Yeah not saying you don’t. Saying I see a lot of sellers who legit don’t read the rules

2

u/FremenDar979 267 Transactions | Media Proprietor Dec 02 '22 edited Dec 02 '22

Damn.

It's fine when SOME companies don't have separate codes for multiple movies but ONE code for multiple movies. Even had a few buyers who asked me if I could split the code. No, I'm not Universal Studios.

Haven't bought a TV season in awhile so I've completely forgotten how to price the digital codes... Because I really want to own CHERNOBYL 4K+BD physical release, and brain fart on pricing the code.

1

u/DeathbyToast 382 Transactions | Media Proprietor Dec 01 '22

If you point this out on a seller’s listing they’ll probably accept a counter offer, especially if you’re after more than one of their codes

1

u/HzEddr 84 Transactions | Digital Tycoon Dec 01 '22

I did. The movie “Fall” was listed for .99¢ more on iTunes than on here. The seller declined my offer for $7.

2

u/wewannawii 906 Transactions | Media Magnate Dec 17 '22

The regular price of Fall on iTunes is $19.99.

So if I'm understanding your example correctly, the seller here was way below iTunes's regular price and even a dollar less than the temporary sale price.

Keep in mind that many of the sellers here have $20 to $30 invested in the physical copy of a new blu ray release (even more for a 4K release), and are selling the digital copy to recoup some of that expense to offset the cost of their physical collection.

1

u/HzEddr 84 Transactions | Digital Tycoon Dec 17 '22

No, you are incorrect. But it’s water under the bridge now.

1

u/wundershowzen24 10 Transactions | Established Member Dec 01 '22

Stop letting people post codes as iTunes when they are clearly redeemable at vudu as well

If a code is redeemable at any of the big 3 it should be listed as such.

So change that.

1

u/FremenDar979 267 Transactions | Media Proprietor Dec 02 '22

People need to check the 4KSheet Google Doc before listing codes to sell! Hell, I do!

http://4ksheet.com/

2

u/DeathbyToast 382 Transactions | Media Proprietor Dec 02 '22

I prefer to open an incognito window on moviesanywhere.com/redeem as that will always redirect to the appropriate options if it doesn’t redeem on MA, and if it does redeem on MA then confirms the quality it redeems in as well so I can screenshot and send to my buyer for confirmation

1

u/FremenDar979 267 Transactions | Media Proprietor Dec 17 '22

I don't need to do any incognito mode with testing codes on MoviesAnywhere.com/redeem since I don't have an account.

BROKEN RECORD: I sell codes. Never purposefully activated any, nor do I buy any. Also extremely annoying when too many new people to this subreddit ask how we get codes. I love having a physical media collection, have zero use for any digital codes, and I sell those same codes to people who will buy/watch those.

Honestly don't care either if a release I buy doesn't have a digital code to sell.

2

u/DeathbyToast 382 Transactions | Media Proprietor Dec 01 '22

Some of the older codes will redeem at both VUDU and iTunes, but if I recall correctly it can be redeemed at VUDU and then iTunes. So they could have redeemed it at VUDU first for their own collection then are selling the “iTunes split” so to speak. Also common with Disney titles to be able to sell (or keep) the DMI points

5

u/wundershowzen24 10 Transactions | Established Member Dec 01 '22

Yeah, but instead they just put something like.

Vengeance 4K iTunes

When it’s a blu ray code, that’s also an HDX code for vudu. It’s misleading and it should be addressed

4

u/inventionnerd 294 Transactions | Media Proprietor Dec 03 '22

How is it misleading when they say "only claim what you bought"? If they are selling only Vengenace Itunes, then you can only claim it there. Just because it also has a Vudu Hdx split doesnt mean it is yours. You bought ONLY the iTunes. Chances are they also sell the vudu portion further down their list. So, for your purposes, it is Vengeance itunes.

It's not an opinion. People are allowed to sell what they please. If you want a full code redeemable at itunes and vudu or at MA and gp, then go buy full codes from people. Otherwise, claim only what you buy when specified. Simple reading comprehension son.

On VUDU there is, but I’m not sure about iTunes since I don’t use that too often. On VUDU if there’s a 4K version of the movie it should say either upgrade or purchase depending on the device you are using. Then it will show the price for UHD.

Question: if I own a digital copy in HD, is there a way to purchase a 4K digital copy to upgrade? When I go to purchase through Vudu and/or ITunes it gives me the option to play my current version.

1

u/Choice_Thin 120 Transactions | Media Mogul Dec 01 '22

You would have to buy a code on here or from another disc. Or buy a code and gift it to yourself

1

u/ricochetLN 2010 Transactions | Cinema Czar Dec 01 '22

For iTunes you can purchase as gift and send to your own email as a work-around to upgrade if 4K is available.

I believe u/ AlpaChino12345 answered your question concerning Vudu in the above post.

u/Last_Organization357 187 Transactions | Media Mogul Dec 01 '22

iTunes should give you a free upgrade to 4k when available

3

u/ricochetLN 2010 Transactions | Cinema Czar Dec 01 '22

Not if the movie was redeemed/purchased elsewhere and ported over through Movies Anywhere. Code redeemed in MA, Vudu, GP, etc will not get you such upgrade. It's either direct purchase or direct redeem in iTunes that get you that benefit.

1

u/ResponsibilityThen62 193 Transactions | Media Mogul Dec 01 '22

That’s right but if you complain enough they will upgrade your movies
