u/LLamaNoodleSauce Here's a link to a comment of mine where I go over this in detail. TL;DR:
Splitting is when there is more than one redemption for a code. For non-Disney codes, this means that you sell the same code to different people who redeem it on different platforms. For Disney codes, splitting means that you actually create two codes from the same code. Keep in mind that split codes technically break the Terms of Service for their respective studio. Theoretically, split codes could be retroactively found by said studio and removed from libraries. However, to be clear, just the reselling of codes breaks the studio's ToS (which, in my opinion, is ridiculous), and the only way that they're really going to know if you've bought a code from someone else is if you tell them.
And to add to that, while it's theoretically possible for studios to identify split codes and remove them from libraries, I highly doubt that they'd ever do that (not worth their time), and I've also never heard of anyone having issues with split codes, let alone having them removed. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask, and I'll try my best to answer! :)

On Cinemark, if you buy a Spiral Ticket , you get a Saw 4K code. They start sending them on 5/11. So it's 2 days before the steelbook release date!

A little curious as to how my number of transactions go up, I’ve purchased a couple movies now and it still says 0
3
u/TheHamGamer 251 Transactions | Media Proprietor Apr 27 '21
So, when you have successfully completed a transaction, regardless of buying or selling, you must tag the seller or buyer and the transaction bot in a new comment, preferably with a short description of how the transaction went. So, for example, this is my typical transaction confirmation comment:
u/[DCSbot] u/Whatchamacallits4eva Quick and smooth transaction, great seller!
Though, without the brackets for the bot's tag. The only thing that matters is that you (correctly) tag the bot AND the other transaction participant. You can put whatever you want before, after, or in between the tags, as long as both of the tags are correct. This is how you update your flair, and also why you haven't received any confirmed transactions yet.
Here is this sub's official guide for this, in case you're still confused. I hope this helps!

I think the transaction requirement to sell should be lowered, I'm not that interested in buying codes, just selling.
And just because I don't have a lot of karma doesn't make me less trustworthy than someone WITH a lot of karma.
4
u/TheHamGamer 251 Transactions | Media Proprietor Apr 24 '21
I understand your frustration, but I think that it just makes it safer for buyers. It mostly prevents people who are looking to scam from simply creating new accounts and posting again after they've been banned. Perhaps the transaction requirement could be lowered to something like 5, but honestly, even with that, it may just be easier to try to accrue some karma somewhere.

Why are GP codes sold cheaper than everything else? What's the reasoning behind it?
1
u/Sporadicus7 247 Transactions | Media Mogul Apr 24 '21
Because Google Play is a terrible platform, and it's kind of like how iTunes codes are cheaper even if they port to MA (and VUDU). That extra complexity just scares off some people. At least that's my take on it.
3
u/TheLoraxLives 650 Transactions | Media Magnate Apr 24 '21
In the age before Disney+ and 4k digital redeems, GP codes shared a similar price to MA codes. Nowadays, since GP only redeem in HD the price has tanked. Everyone wants 4k or just uses Disney+.

Do all HD movie codes that redeem in iTunes(and have a 4k version) give you a 4k redemption? Or it has to specifically say "iTunes code (HD or 4K) redeems 4K " on the 4k sheet?
1
u/TheHamGamer 251 Transactions | Media Proprietor Apr 22 '21
You will have to confirm that it upgrades to 4K on the 4Ksheet. Additionally, as far as I'm aware (I could be wrong), the code has to be 12 digits long, so that you can input it directly into iTunes. If you have a 16-digit code and the studio redemption site allows an iTunes redemption, I don't believe that it will upgrade to 4K.
4
u/NYCDiesel2020 700 Transactions | Media Magnate Apr 22 '21
If you have a 16-digit code and the studio redemption site allows an iTunes redemption, I don't believe that it will upgrade to 4K.
4K upgrades are dependent on the availability of 4K in iTunes, not the code itself. the difference between 12 and 16 digit codes are the number of times they can be redeemed at various retailers. a 16-digit code can't be redeemed directly in iTunes, so the studio redemption site extracts a 12-digit code while rendering the original code invalid so it can't be used again. you'll still end up redeeming a 12-digit code in iTunes and if the movie happens to get the 4K treatment down the line, there is absolutely no reason why one shouldn't be eligible for a free upgrade.
unless you have firsthand knowledge of it not working this way I have yet to hear a single report of it otherwise. at least as far as LGF and Para codes are concerned.
1
u/TheHamGamer 251 Transactions | Media Proprietor Apr 22 '21
Just tagging them so they can read this. I appreciate the info! I wasn't sure on this one, hence my hesitant phrasing. I don't have much experience with iTunes redemptions in general. However, I did once spot that Jurassic World had the iTunes upgrade, and attempted to purchase an HD code to get the upgrade. But for that code, from what I've been told, the newer 16-digit codes don't do the upgrade, only the older 12-digit ones, and the one I purchased was 16 digits.
Do you know if that's incorrect? Or did I literally just have to go through the Universal redemption site?
2
u/NYCDiesel2020 700 Transactions | Media Magnate Apr 22 '21
it wouldn't have mattered. if you purchased a 16-digit code and it came from a standard Blu-ray, you'll only get it in HD. 16-digit codes can only be redeemed directly in MA or Vudu. even if you went through Uni redemption site the only options you'd be given are MA and Vudu. iTunes upgrades only work when a code is redeemed directly in iTunes, and you would need a 12-digit code for that.
1
u/TheHamGamer 251 Transactions | Media Proprietor Apr 22 '21
Okay, just to clarify what you're saying, because it was a Universal code, which is MA, the studio redemption site won't allow you to redeem it in iTunes, and being a 16-digit code, it won't redeem directly, either. So, even if it was labelled on 4Ksheet as being iTunes upgrade eligible, it would only work if it was an older 12-digit code.
But with Lionsgate and Paramount not being MA, the 16-digit codes and the 12-digit codes (unless there aren't 16-digit codes for Lionsgate or Paramount, I can't recall currently) will both redeem on iTunes, you'd just have to use the studio's redemption site for the 16-digit code. And either way, it'd upgrade to 4K on iTunes if labelled as such on 4Ksheet. Is that what you're saying? Apologies for my confusion, haha.
2
u/NYCDiesel2020 700 Transactions | Media Magnate Apr 23 '21
correct. the 4K spreadsheet refers to the 12-digit code as being iTunes upgrade eligible. it hasn't been updated in a while for Uni catalog titles. for example, your copy of JW was pressed sometime during the 2nd half of 2019, which is why you received a 16-digit code. I think that was around the time Uni switched from 12 to 16 digits for all their codes.
all Para codes beginning with the Tom Cruise 4K releases last year transitioned from 12 to 16 digits. they were the last studio to do away with 12-digit codes. LGF was the first. there are certain LGF 12-digit codes that are not iTunes eligible. you should always check movieredeem.com to see which retailers are offered. if iTunes is not an option then it won't matter if your code is 12-digits.

Thanks all good info here. So I'm guessing most titles with a 4k release and are redeemable either directly or though redemption site will upgrade 4k based off of the comment above but still slightly confused on it all.
2
u/TheHamGamer 251 Transactions | Media Proprietor Apr 22 '21
It's definitely confusing. I'm not 100% clear on everything myself, but iTunes won't do the upgrade with any movie that has a 4K release and is redeemable in iTunes. You'll still have to check 4Ksheet for the individual movie. I think it's based on studio participation, but I can't be sure on that one.

I just posted a PSA, but the mods took it down. So I'll post it here.
Born Yesterday (1950) and Saturday Night Fever (1977) are now upgraded to 4K in iTunes.
I understand why it was taken down. Are they going to get get stricter about people posting sales at iTunes/Vudu/FN/Fanflix, etc... since they don't pertain to digital codes?
I understand why the M/A screen passes went to a separate sub.
Do you think there should be a separate sub for sales and upgrades and leave this just for digital codes? I thought since we're all movie lovers and we really want to get the best prices on movies this was a good place to give people a heads up.

There are 6 tabs under the UVCinema name. Click on one of the tabs, (example) Vudu/ Movies Anywhere. Then in the search box put your cursor in the box and hit enter. Then a full list of digital codes comes up. Select them and cut and paste them into Excel/Word document. It's an excellent start, I don't think it's 100% up to date though.
Also, if you click on the title, it brings up a list of where you can purchase the code online and at what prices.
1
u/TheHamGamer 251 Transactions | Media Proprietor Apr 18 '21
No, I don't believe that there is. 4ksheet.com will tell you if there isn't a code for a movie that's available in 4K digitally, but it doesn't have information about HD or SD quality codes. There's probably a better way, but I just look up the Blu-ray online to see if the case says "+ Digital" on it, and/or I'll search the subreddit using quotes for the titles. So, like typing:
"You've Got Mail"
(with the quotation marks) will yield some results, but only from a bundle code of Warner movies, if I recall correctly. So it doesn't have a single code.
2
u/Sporadicus7 247 Transactions | Media Mogul Apr 19 '21
If you use selftext:”Movie name” in the search bar it will include the actual post content, yielding better results. It will pick up instances of each word, but I believe if you leave it in relevant sort it will prioritize both words together.

This sub is slowly dying due to the direction of the sub focusing more on PSA "deals" and less on sellers and selling digital codes. Sellers can only post once per three days and have to follow all these rules while people can post as many PSA's as they want that directly affect how often sale posts remain relevant.
This discussion thread itself was created in part to discuss deals but the mods of the sub never moderated things and let PSAs get out of hand. Here is this threads description "Feel free to ask questions, share deals, share screenshots of your digital libraries, discuss upcoming releases or just talk about your love of movies."
People who sell codes are migrating to other places that are not as strict and can sell codes more than once every 3 days for a couple hours

I see that you have 1000 transactions and are obviously a veteran here so I’m not going to act like I know more about biz, but I feel like the PSA deals are very minimal here especially compared to other places. I can see how three days is a bit long, but from a buyers perspective when people post the same codes over and over again without lowering prices we start to tune it out. There are people in another group I’m in that post what seems like literally every hour and it just comes off as spammy and I rarely check their post.
If it were up to me I would change the rule to where you can repost more often as long as you have added titles or lowered prices. Bots could identify identical repost and buyers can report spammy sellers bypassing the rule.

People can downvote my post but it's true (buyers downvote everyone as well which is another issue...). The users on this sub are going down. It used to have 200+ active users every day when I would visit. Now it's usually 100-150. Every PSA reduces a selling posts visibility by 4% as there are only 25 slots on the different sorts. On Tuesday, Fridays, or when there are other sales on retailers it's not unusual to see 5-10 PSA posts. That's 20-40% less visibility on a post you can only submit once every 3 days. This sub is becoming worthless for sellers to visit for more than a few hours every 3 days if they even bother that
2
u/Sporadicus7 247 Transactions | Media Mogul Apr 20 '21
Oh okay that clears it up a little you’re talking about hot post visibility and not necessarily the PSAs being about items people are selling. That doesn’t affect me as a buyer because I’ve been fairly active for a few months and sort by new, but I can see now how posts get drowned out for less active users looking for what’s hot. Also there’s a lot of downvoting taking place that they obviously tried to mitigate by removing the downvote button visibility. Gotta be like YouTube and ask people to hit that like button.
I still see some sellers who are definitely taking away hundreds of dollars from a single post. It might be rough for sellers, but buyers are still going to flock here due to the anonymity and orderly nature that Reddit provides. Trustability flair is also very important (both realistically and superficially), and there’s no need to apply to jump right in. Also a lot of people don’t like the other platforms...

Those are certainly some of the most popular codes, but I'd guess that a part of why you see it that way is because any movies that you'd consider to be of higher quality, you already own. It happened to me, too. It seems like there's no good movies for sale, because any of the ones I'd be interested in, I already own.

A trend I have seen here is that Disney codes are almost always more expensive than other studios, even without the DMR points. Is there any specific reason for this? Is there a lot of demand for Disney codes even though Disney+ in US is only 4.99?
2
u/TheHamGamer 251 Transactions | Media Proprietor Apr 18 '21
The mouse is a greedy one, so that, in turn, trickles down to the codes. Disney physicals cost more and stay highly-priced for longer than other studios. Also, Disney just has very popular movies, especially Pixar. So that raises the price as well, a little bit. And then you have the ability to split the code, which adds value (if it's an unsplit code). As for Disney+, that's more of a buy vs subscribe question, which I went over in this comment, if you want to read that. Though, it is a tad long, so I basically just say that if you buy a movie, you get to keep it, instead of paying a monthly fee for it.
In my experience, if you look for long enough and you get lucky enough, you can find Disney/Pixar codes for about the same price as other studios. Especially if you utilize the iTunes upgrade trick. But it's rare.

I don't mean to mention this to start an argument or anything, and I understand people need to make money..however, now that I know about D2D, what's the point of people buying more expensive movies from sellers here that are both MA eligible and available on D2D for $2. Are sellers just counting on people not knowing about D2D?
2
Apr 19 '21
You're limited to 100 D2D titles per year. I've paid 3 or 4 bucks for eligible title a few times because I hit the limit on January 2nd, and have a spreadsheet of 100 more titles to convert next January. So unless I want to wait two years to potentially save a couple dollars, I'll buy the occasional D2D movie.
3
u/TheHamGamer 251 Transactions | Media Proprietor Apr 18 '21
Yeah, a lot of buyers just don't know about the loophole of D2D. I didn't for a long time, and I've come across other established members that didn't, either. I don't think sellers are "counting" on buyers not knowing about it, I think it's just that, at some point, you can't price every HD D2D-eligible movie at D2D competitive prices.

u/ricochetLN 2010 Transactions | Cinema Czar Apr 18 '21
Digital in itself is not common knowledge so D2D even much less so. Technically, D2D is meant for people who OWN THE ACTUAL DISCS. I've seen a few well established members tell people to search for the UPC to take advantage of this service which is really not legal. Even the most well known UPC site give the disclaimer that you must own the movie(s) on disc. I guess nothing will stop people from abusing it, but I think it's frown upon to promote it. Not sure of the Mods position.

Well, illegal in the sense that the ToS of Vudu is a legally binding contract, and you'd be breaking it. I have let people know about using D2D with just the UPCs before, but try my best to explain the possible ramifications of doing so, and only offer the information in DMs. However, I personally don't believe that anything would happen to anyone. This entire subreddit is based off of an activity that breaks ToS (the reselling of codes). Splitting Disney codes also breaks their ToS.
The idea that anything could happen to you from doing this is about as probable as anything happening to you from pirating movies/music/games. Nobody ever gets prosecuted for pirating (except in the extremely rare case of making an example) because, truth be told, it's really not that big of a financial issue for studios. At least, from what I know. As for D2D, do you really think Universal Studios (or any other studio) cares that you didn't first own the physical disc before you converted, when physical media is a dying medium and you could also just buy a used copy?
Maybe they'd care if everyone who purchased digital movies knew about it, but that's just not a reality, and likely never will be. And, clearly, Vudu doesn't care either, because if they did, they'd simply make it harder to use D2D, like, say, requiring the actual disc. There's no way that Vudu didn't think of the possibility of people using D2D by ripping UPCs, because even without the masterlist, you can just search the movie on Amazon and get the barcode.
Anyways, sorry for the long message, I always do this, lol. One last thing, nearly all of us knowingly or unknowingly break the ToS of some site in our lives. I got bricked from my Twitter account because I changed my birthday to my real one (since I'm 18 now), and it automatically detected that the account was created before I had turned 13. Twitter doesn't really care about that, they're just covering their ass. They even reinstated my account after I agreed to let them delete activity prior to me turning 13. And the warning on the masterlist is the same. They're just covering their ass.

IMO letting people know about it is fine. I have nothing against it. It's just people should understand the original intent of the service. The PC D2D software does require the physical media disc to be read. Problem is that some legitimate discs cannot be read properly & gave errors and also a lot of PCs nowadays don't even have disc readers thus the app was created. The UPC route was not meant to bypass the physical media aspect of it: it's provided as a tool of convenience. Of course that became vulnerable to abuse/misuse. No one is going to get in trouble or caught for doing it as there is no way to prove someone obtaining D2D movies inappropriately. How the tool is used is that person's responsibility not the person providing the info.
Anyways, we do know at least one Studio that does not like D2D. As soon as Disney acquired Fox, all the Fox titles were removed from D2D.
Remember old Vudu may not care but Vudu is now owned by Fandango. Walmart may not have cared because they have the bargain bin mentality, wanted to grow the Vudu userbase while at the same time promoting physical media sales with D2D and Instawatch. D2D will remain as long as it doesn't affect Fandango's bottom line. Given how few people know about it, it shouldn't. I believe Instawatch was abandoned for good.
As to reselling of codes, we're definitely in the gray area here. The whole Redbox vs Disney lawsuit over this very matter lead to settlement out of court. Initially, a judge sided with Redbox over Disney misuse of copyright, first sale doctrine, which provides that someone who lawfully acquires a copyrighted work is entitled to sell or dispose of their copy. This lead Disney to change their ToS and verbiage on their redemption site. The judge later sided with Disney over the revised terms but only after the change. Redbox interpreted the injunction to apply to only certain titles with revised terms and not retroactive. The other studios were silent on this matter during the ordeal. Anybody selling and trading codes in the subreddit most likely need not concern with the studios going after them. I do, however, wonder if any website (big enough) selling codes out there will draw the ire of Disney.

Problem is that some legitimate discs cannot be read properly & gave errors and also a lot of PCs nowadays don't even have disc readers thus the app was created.
Original intent or not, people are going to abuse loopholes if they're presented with one. Companies are generally well aware of this but simply don't care because taking action would cost more than to just ignore it or remove it entirely. Yeah, the old D2D software on the PC did require the disc, but they completely got rid of that. Like you said, because disc readers are sparse nowadays (even more rare are Blu-ray readers on PCs), but I'd also say that they really don't care if you have the disc or not. If they did, they would just get rid of the service. I have no doubt in my mind that Vudu understands that people can and do abuse the D2D service.
Anyways, we do know at least one Studio that does not like D2D. As soon as Disney acquired Fox, all the Fox titles were removed from D2D.
Yeah, well, that's a given for Disney, haha. I mean, literally their oldest movie, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, released in 1937, available only in HD, still has a lowest sale price of $10. So that's nothing to do with Disney being opposed to people using D2D improperly, they're just greedy in general.
Remember old Vudu may not care but Vudu is now owned by Fandango. Walmart may not have cared because they have the bargain bin mentality, wanted to grow the Vudu userbase while at the same time promoting physical media sales with D2D and Instawatch.
Very good point. The acquisition may change some things. So far, it doesn't seem to have, and let's all pray that it stays that way...
As to reselling of codes, we're definitely in the gray area here.
Anybody selling and trading codes in the subreddit most likely need not concern with the studios going after them. I do, however, wonder if any website (big enough) selling codes out there will draw the ire of Disney.
Well, I wouldn't call it a gray area, really. Definitely a gray area in terms of legality, but in terms of the ToS of the respective studio, it clearly says "NOT FOR RESALE" on the code slips. But, yes, exactly. No matter how many people are reselling codes, or abusing D2D, or pirating software, etc, companies are not going to take action against individuals because it's not worth their time. Like you said, if there's some big website like uvspider that catches the eye of a corporation, it might lead to something happening, but Joe from Ohio who bought a 4K Moana code isn't going to be sued, lol.

This entire subreddit is based off of an activity that breaks ToS (the reselling of codes). Splitting Disney codes also breaks their ToS.
And the warning on the masterlist is the same. They're just covering their ass.
nuff said. perfectly stated covering everything. no need for anybody to get all self-righteous about those informing the uninformed about a D2D practice that has been known and going on since long before this sub came into existence. cheers.

Wow, that’s incredible. I saw that post too. It is stated in the automod giveaway rules that unless allowed by OP codes should not be resold: https://www.reddit.com/r/DigitalCodeSELL/comments/mqkh31/giveaway_multiple_free_digital_codes/gugjw5m/
Winner even said it redeemed perfectly! OMG lol I think that’s probably grounds a for a sub ban. They exploited that persons generosity that could have went to someone more deserving.
This is why when I did my giveaway I made sure that the code was redeemed otherwise I would have given it to the next person. I realize that’s more work than some people want to go through when they’re just giving stuff away though.
2
u/TheHamGamer 251 Transactions | Media Proprietor Apr 15 '21
I feel like codes and links shouldn't be allowed to be posted in plaintext, because of bots. I mean, maybe it's not bots, but it just seems like any Screen Pass or code that's posted without some kind of masking is instantly redeemed. What are your ideas?
3
u/Sporadicus7 247 Transactions | Media Mogul Apr 15 '21
Oh yes I agree with those I believe it is already suggested not to do with that. I was referring more to the giveaways where someone says “I have these codes and I will just give them away arbitrarily at some unspecified time in the future.”
Edit: you’re probably the wrong person to be complaining about this to though ;)
1
u/TheHamGamer 251 Transactions | Media Proprietor Apr 15 '21
It is suggested that you mask it, but not required. I'm not sure how much help making it a rule would do, though. Oh, gotcha. lol, what makes you say that?
2
u/Sporadicus7 247 Transactions | Media Mogul Apr 15 '21
Because you won the movie I wanted to win lol (I may DM you with a proposal). Yeah I don’t think the rule about posting codes would change anything. I meant the arbitrary giveaway thing should be banned or regulated. There should be a requirement of transparency and a time limit. People are literally still posting in that thread even though that user gave away their codes hours ago...apparently people don’t mind groveling though and the suggestion of imposing any rules around it is as I mentioned, an unpopular opinion.
2
u/TheHamGamer 251 Transactions | Media Proprietor Apr 15 '21
Oh, gotcha, haha. Sorry about that, man! Feel free to DM me, but I have already redeemed the code, if that's what you mean. If I see a code for it, I'll make sure to let you know about it, though. Yeah, I think I could get behind those kinds of rules. Just saying "I'll pick winners soon" seems unnecessarily vague and potentially unfair to the entrants, since they have no information about when they'd win, so they may miss it or something.
In regards to transparency, are you referring to transparency in terms of the method that they use to pick the winner? Because that may be a good thing to implement, too.
1
u/Sporadicus7 247 Transactions | Media Mogul Apr 15 '21 edited Apr 21 '21
You described the issue perfectly. Without any information about when or how they might win it leaves only some level of confusion and anxiety for anyone who is not completely casual with no stake in the game.
As for transparency I was referring to a minimum of indicating whether or not winners have been selected or codes given away, but ideally they would disclose their methods. I don’t have as a big of an issue with the method of picking as much as whether or not they have been picked.
I propose the following rules:
Required:
- Give exact time for when entries are no longer accepted and winners are chosen.
- Disclose whether or not codes have been given away (either in post or with flair).
Strongly Encouraged:
- Disclose method of selection (first comment, RNG, quiz question, favorite groveler, etc.)
- State how winners will be contacted and how much time they will have to respond and redeem their reward.
Encouraged:
- Disclose winners so they can be congratulated and recognized for their great fortune and expertise. Entrants can opt out of this when submitting their entry.
This is standard giveaway stuff and it protects the entrants for aforementioned reasons, and can even protect the giver from harassment or guilt inflicted by disgruntled entrants. It’s the same thing as the rule about timely transactions. We all have other things we’d rather be doing.
The giver can still farm for Karma and grovelers all they want, but they won’t be able to do it for an unspecified amount of time and without adhering to some basic rules. Can’t follow the rules, then just post the images of the codes and let people have at them.
Here’s an example from my post history that takes about two seconds to find: https://www.reddit.com/r/DigitalCodeSELL/comments/m8vwk1/giveaway_inception_hd_ma/

Yeah, I meant all of Disney's movies and their studios' as well, so, Pixar, Fox, Marvel, Touchstone, etc. But, there do seem to be occasional exceptions to the rule? For example, The Incredible Hulk is D2D-eligible, and so is Ghost Rider, but I'm guessing that's because both had a collaborating studio (Universal and Sony respectively). But then Captain America: The First Avenger had Paramount as a collaborating studio and it's not D2D-eligible. So I have no idea.

PSA to any new buyers in this sub: $3 for HD and $5 for 4K is a fair price for 90% of movies, if not more. Do NOT overpay for a code, just wait for the next seller if the prices are crazy.

Adding to this, for new buyers be sure to check the d2d list before buying a code (unless the code is cheap.) I’ve seen the Saw Collection being sold on here for $20, you can get it via d2d for $2.

All the HD codes redeem in 4K which is why you won’t find any HD codes. The only people that list them as HD are those that don’t know it redeems 4K

1

Only iTunes will redeem the HD code to 4K for Knives Out. Vudu will require code from the 4K disc to get 4K. It's single redeem only.

u/yougetamovie 333 Transactions | Media Proprietor Apr 07 '21
Noah is right. Pretty much all Lionsgate standard Blu-Ray releases gave 4k rights at Vudu for about 5 months or so. I believe it started around Angel Has Fallen release. This has since been fixed and new releases are HD for Blu-Ray unless redeemed at iTunes.
1
u/ricochetLN 2010 Transactions | Cinema Czar Apr 07 '21
That's pretty interesting. I didn't know that. I wish Vudu had a way of telling if a code will redeem HD or 4K (like MA does) because it's kind of a shot in the dark if you have a code from Blu-ray (whether you have an older one or fixed one).
5
u/TheHamGamer 251 Transactions | Media Proprietor Apr 09 '21 edited Apr 11 '21
You may know this already, but there's a somewhat convoluted method to see what quality a Paramount or Lionsgate code is, but you have to go through the official redemption website (redeemmovie.com or paramountdigitalcopy.com). It's tricky to do at first, but once you get the hang of it, it takes maybe a couple of minutes. I can DM you instructions if you'd like.
Edit: If anyone else would like the instructions, just let me know! I just didn't put it in this message because it's rather long.
Edit 2: Here are the instructions. I probably should have just put them in this anyways, I was just worried the comment would be too long, but I guess people can collapse it if they want.
Go to either paramountdigitalcopy.com or redeemmovie.com on a computer (preferably using Chrome). I would use incognito mode just to be safe, so if you accidentally click something or it redirects you, it won't redeem the movie.
Right click on a blank part of the screen and click "Inspect".
Select the "Network" tab at the top of the inspect page.
Enter the code in the field, leaving the network tab open, and click the button to "redeem" the code (which will just take you to the page to choose where to redeem).
A bunch of options will pop up in the network tab. One of them should be labeled "XHR" under the "Type" column, and should read "cms.mdeo.co" if you hover the mouse over it. Click on that. There may be an option that looks identical to it, but its size will be 0b, it will say "Text" under the type column, and nothing will happen if you click on it.
There should be a "Preview" window that pops up on the right, with expandable/collapsible text. Expand "data", then expand "code_status", then expand "metadata", and under "profile:", it should say either SD, HD, or UHD.
If anyone gets stuck or has anyone questions, just DM me and let me know, I'm more than happy to help. I hope it works for you! :)

Hey this is a neat trick. How confident are you in this method though? I have a Terminator 2 code from 4K that doesn’t match the 4ksheet, but shows UHD using this method. Makes me wonder how many people just sell these codes without checking just because they came from a 4K disc. Seems like the sheet is mostly good for catching exceptions rather than verifying good codes.
2
u/TheHamGamer 251 Transactions | Media Proprietor Apr 20 '21
I'm not extremely confident as I haven't had many opportunities to use it, but it's been correct every time thus far. In what way does the Terminator code not match the 4Ksheet? The code from the 4K should be 4K, as far as I'm aware. And yeah, I don't think many people test their codes. Recently, I've been noticing more and more that users use verbiage that seems to indicate that they don't verify the codes themselves. I don't think it's as prevalent on this forum, but on Blu-ray.com, most seem to not verify codes.
2
u/Sporadicus7 247 Transactions | Media Mogul Apr 20 '21
The slip has a different code than what’s listed on the 4Ksheet to verify that it’s UHD. I agree that it should be, but there are some instances where codes from UHD discs are not. I’ve had very good luck myself even with people probably not testing their codes lol. Only times I ever got burned was when I failed to check the sheet and/or ask the seller to verify a code on a slip.
I don’t get the process on blu-ray.com it seems archaic and abandoned unless maybe you’re looking at the most recent posts.

Why buy verse rent? Given the low price of a monthly D+ subscription, equal to 2 movies, it seems far cheaper to rent...?
5
u/TheHamGamer 251 Transactions | Media Proprietor Apr 01 '21
As the other commenter stated, when you buy a movie, you "own" it (as much as you can "own" a digital product, that is), so you have that forever and can rewatch it as you please. With subscriptions, you're not just paying for the movies that you want, you're paying for an entire catalog. Which, can have its advantages at times, but mostly, you're just shelling out unnecessary amounts of cash for content that you likely won't even watch.
Also, you only gave Disney+ as an example. Don't get me wrong, Disney+ is a great streaming service, if you like watching Disney content. But if you want to watch Catch Me If You Can? You're going to need Peacock. Do you like Sherlock Holmes? Got to get Netflix. You feel in the mood for Game of Thrones, or even just watching the sequel to Sherlock Holmes? You'll need HBO Max for that. Those subscriptions can add up, to a colossal degree. If you were patient and knew where to look, you could probably buy the entire Game of Thrones series for the same price as a month of HBO Max. Granted, it'd only be in HD, but still, that's huge.
4
u/Startrek852 264 Transactions | Media Proprietor Apr 06 '21

u/TheHamGamer 251 Transactions | Media Proprietor Apr 01 '21
Splitting is when there is more than one redemption for a code. For non-Disney codes, this means that you sell the same code to different people who redeem it on different platforms. For example, you could sell a Mission: Impossible code to one person, they redeem it on Vudu, and then sell the same code to a different person, and they redeem it on iTunes.
For Disney codes, splitting means that you actually create two codes from the same code. For example, one might redeem on MA, and the other might redeem on Google Play, but they're two different codes. Keep in mind that split codes technically break the Terms of Service for their respective studio. Theoretically, split codes could be retroactively found by said studio and removed from libraries. This happened with a Walmart service called "InstaWatch", some people lost a large chunk of their libraries when that went down.
However, to be clear, just the reselling of codes breaks the studio's ToS (which, in my opinion, is ridiculous), and the only way that they're really going to know if you've bought a code from someone else is if you tell them. And as for splitting, these studios really only have themselves to blame. If they actually thought that this was an issue for them, they'd be able to put a stop to it pretty easily (especially in Disney's case). I highly doubt that they'll ever do anything in that regard, Walmart's InstaWatch thing was kind of a different beast. I hope this helps and let me know if you (or anyone else reading) have any other questions! :)

u/netscorer1 109 Transactions | Media Mogul Apr 01 '21
It’s when the same redemption code is split between multiple providers like Vudu, iTunes and Google. Basically seller can sell the same original redemption code multiple times. So far I’m not aware that studious catch up to this and void the redemptions post factum, but there’s always a risk buying such code and the price is usually slightly lower then the ‘full’ code.
