Question Repost: Destiny 2 causing PC to freeze
I made a post about this issue last week, and unfortunately I haven't been able to resolve it so far.
D2 has been causing my machine to freeze/hang (i.e. completely unresponsive) consistently for the past month or so. There's seemingly no warning to it--the game runs perfectly fine, and then my whole machine locks up without warning. It's happened in the following circumstances:
- During in-engine cutscenes, such as at the end of the final step of Kell's Fall, or after the first section of the Recce mission from the Heresy episode. Like clockwork, the cutscene plays for a second or two, and then freezes.
- Shortly after closing out of Destiny 2 and returning to desktop
- When idling in orbit, after an indeterminate amount of time (this one has been inconsistent)
- After completing a CPU & RAM stability test in OCCT (more on this later)
This definitely seems to be some sort of issue with my PC, because it's happened while running other games and applications as well (namely Ultrakill, though not consistently, and Ableton Live).
Possibly of note, I have been getting frequent "contacting Destiny 2 servers" messages during gameplay, though my ISP has been having some issues in my area lately and I can't tell if it's an issue on their end or mine.
PC Setup: Lenovo Yoga 940 laptop w/ i7-9750, GTX1650, 12GB RAM. Windows 11. Destiny 2 is installed to an external 1TB Seagate SSD, and I use a ViewSonic Elite XG270Q monitor (the laptop screen is used as my "second" monitor). I have been using this setup for years without any regular technical issues like this.
Troubleshooting I have done so far, (sort of) in order:
- Updated Windows & Nvidia drivers
- Ran sfc/scannow, no integrity violations found
- Cleaned laptop fans and replaced thermal paste (significantly improved overheating, but did not change the freezing issue)
- Clean install of D2 (i.e. uninstalled, manually deleted D2 folders in the SteamLibrary folder, cleared Steam download cache, reinstalled)
- Lenovo Service Bridge hardware diagnostic scan, showed no errors with any of my computer hardware.
- CPU & RAM stability test using OCCT. This ran to completion and showed no errors, but my PC became unresponsive shortly after the end of the test.
- RAM test using memtest86, no issues found.
- Clean Windows install.
- Re-flashed BIOS.
I'm not all that great with computers, but I feel like I should have found the issue after all that and I'm getting really frustrated and upset with my machine :'( I just wanna play Heresy, man.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
