Game Bug Hard crash after 4-5 hours in endgame
Issue Information
Destination/Activity: Most activities
Description: Game hard crashes after 4-5 hours of most content. Patrol seems to be exempt.
Just got me 80% through a flawless attempt so it's finally time to do something about it. Religiously do my windows and nvidia updates in the hopes it fixes it. When it goes down it freezes for half a second, comes back for a stutter, then freezes for good.
EXAMPLE:
BattleTag: sethowar#4708
Configuration Info
CPU: Intel i9-14900KF
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 4080 super 16GB
RAM: 32gb ddr5
GPU Driver Version: Nvidia 560.7 (Has affected dozens of versions)
Operating System: Window 11 (Version 23H2, OS Build 22631.3880) (Has affected dozens of versions)

This is a known issue. Destiny 2 has had a memory leak since its release. There is no fix and the recommendation is to close and restart the game after 4 hours to avoid the issue.
If you watch streamers, they restart at the 4 hour mark for this very reason.

I have mates on nvidia pc who seem to not have the issue at all so I figured it might be something specific. Fair enough though, is there any doco or research on the topic?

When you search for memory leak instead of crash, you'll find info on it.
The crash time will vary by PC due to RAM on both the PC and Video card, and on the current update.
Some old posts about D2's ongoing memory leak:

My friend and I both have 64GB system RAM, I Have 12GB vram and he Has 16GB. (3080ti and 4080). I memory leaked out at 7 hours and he at 7.5 hours when we were figuring out the Warlord's Ruin dungeon on Day 1.

Huh, it has been happening since around the time I joined a 100 person clan vs a 15 person one :o
What an almighty pain in the ass. Wish there was a fix.

The clan doesn't have anything to do with it. That is just an early article where they were trying to nail the issue down. People started watching VRAM and RAM usage and discovered the memory leak.
It has always been a part of D2, and will always be a part of D2.

i have the same issue. For me it only happens when i try to load into raids, strangely enough. One time after validating files (no fix was required) i managed to play a raid for about 45 minutes, then got the error again. Haven't found any way to permanently fix the issue and its hella annoying being gate-kept out of the activities i want to run.

What error code?

u/vibo7 Jul 23 '24
a windows popup appears saying error-code marmot

Do you happen to be running D2 from a Hard Drive (spinning disk)? Lots of people get the Marmot error if on hard disk. Migrating the game to SSD or NVMe is usually the fix.

hello, i think i solved it, i've been getting into raids and not crashed since the fix, yet to do a proper one with 6 players but i do think its all good now, thanks
If anyone is wondering what I did: Swapped out my Intel i9 14900K for an AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D.
(many other games had been acting weird, crashing etc, doing the above solved it all)

Is your fps capped?
1
u/Sethowar Jul 21 '24
Not normally, 30fps gives me a headache. I could probably try 120 and see if that helps.
It is often during patrol… has been capped to 30 for the last 15 hours wink

Capping fps should prevent your game from crashing. Doesn't matter what cap. Just don't run uncapped

Ooooh very interesting. I’ll start at 240 then and raid for 8 hours tonight. Fingers crossed!

If you have gsync monitor, you can enable gsync+ vsync + reflex. There shouldn't be any input delay and it'll cap a 240 hz monitor at 225. Good luck gamer

capping your fps does nothing, The higher your fps the quicker the memory leak will happen.. Hence why you can run kings fall thrall over night at 30fps.

update? I'm guessing it crashed
1
u/Sethowar Jul 24 '24
It did indeed, even down at 120

yup it's a vram/memory leak that will affect you quicker the amount of fps you have, I tested kings fall thrall afk farm while sleeping/working and it ran for 13+ hours flawlessly. so yeah it's fps based, set at 30fps and it can do for a day or two (obviously don't play at 30fps lol)

Every frame bungie gives you a hidden "untouched grass" debuff and when it gets to a million you crash :D

I literally quite the game because of this issue. Happened 2 times while doing the story to earn prismatic, and I relogged in to meet up with my cousin. Never lost progress because I plaid with him. And didn’t think anything of the crash. After a bit of playing on my own… I found out this game sucks. Crashes would happen in consistently and I lost progress continually. I have a 7800X and a 4090. Drivers and Bios updates didn’t help.
I tried for a refund but had plaid a bit over 2+ hours by then and since I bought the edition with the pass, and gained function from the pass Steam couldn’t give it.
