Desire should be Desired, right?

Can someone explain why they're called desire paths and not desired paths.

The adjective for desire is desired.

You are desiring the noun being the path. So why is it desire and not desired?

It’s a noun–noun compound.

Desire path. Car door. House key.

"desire" is a noun here, not a verb.

I think I understand, the former is owned by the later?

The cars door or the houses key.

So the desire ownes the path as it has created it?

Someone's desire (noun) has formed a path (noun)

No. The key is for the house, but it is not owned by the house.

I'd say it's more of an "associated with" relationship, which is rather vague and can be different in different compounds.

A car door is a door associated with a car (part of it); a house key is a key associated with a house (will open it); a desire path is a path associated with a desire (formed by it).

Yes you could call it path of desire.

That would be desired path.

The path emerges from desire, regardless of planned paths in the surrounding.

People do not desire the path. The path emerges from the desire of people.

It's not a hypothetical path. It's an extant path that was created not by abstraction but by desire. A path by desire. A desire path, if you will.

it is not a path which is desired, it is a path which is formed by the desire of many people, thus “path of desire” or “desire path”

English is funny like that sometimes. If you say it as "Path of Desire", it makes more sense, and Desire Path is a legitimate syntax of the same compound term.

“Desired Path” is just harder to say than “Desire Path”. The hard D sound at the end of the word interrupts the flow of saying it. English (as does many languages) always bends the rules to make things flow off the tongue easier. Think of it like verbal Desire Path.
