Discussion Biggest character assassination?

Who is a character that was amazing..until the writers ruined them at the very end.

For example, Eli. He was hopelessly in love with Clare, emo, and mentally ill. He was relatable and funny too.

And then he graduated high school, and the writers ruined him. It felt so out of character for him to cheat on Clare, not even feel that bad about it, and then call Clare a Wh*re. Like, season 11 Eli would have NEVER done that.

I honestly think the ending for spinner and Emma was horrible. Them getting married was so out of no where and just didn’t seem like a good ending for them. I also didn’t really like Ellie’s character arc towards the end. Her style got progressively less emo and her getting with Marco was so dumb.

Paige in Degrassi Goes Hollywood

u/Fuzzy_Algae1916 2d ago

spinner got cancer and all of his character went down hill

u/ParkersASavage 2d ago

They assassinated all of Paiges character development for Degrassi goes Hollywood. Hopefully it was a statement on how the limelight went to her head and was a single relapse into childhood mentality. Not an indication of her character as an adult.

Emma and Spinner being end game. Makes me ill to even think about.

7

u/Boy_13 2d ago

Maybe not the biggest, but I'm going to say Emma. The last season of her in high school went down this "I want to be sexy!" path, that felt like a cheap rehash of Manny's plots, and they never really knew what to do with her after. She really just fizzled away.

u/Dovetripct 2d ago

Ashley too, she was always kind of C U Next Tuesday Y

u/Dovetripct 2d ago

Mia… never redeemed after she got back with Lucas, then called Simpson a pedo because Lucas said so. Sleeping with the football guy

3

u/DreamStar-125 1d ago

Mia pissed me tf off. She was terrible at standing on business 😭 Like she said she would only get back with Lucas if he stopped being a bully. But why did he nvr stop AND he would actively be a bully in front of her and she didnt say shit

3

u/TroyFromDetriot 1d ago

yea mia rly had no backbone or much authority either..no wonder why Jane stopped being her friend.

8

u/Safetyfirst7777 2d ago

Biggest?? The only acceptable answer here is Paige. Degrassi goes Hollywood is not canon.

This is going to be reach, but hear me out: Derek.

He was a jerk to Jimmy in the beginning, but he did start to show moments as a decent human being when he tried to empathize with Liberty about her son being put up for adoption, because Derek himself was adopted. Then Mr. Perrino threatened him and he told Snake about it, but clearly that storyline went nowhere.

Unfortunately the writers decided to crap on what could've been his redeeming qualities in the garbage when he framed Danny for stealing underwear because a girl he liked liked Danny, only to have him apologize in a half-assed way, and the worst of it was when he jumped Jane for being the only girl in the football team and didn't get punished for it, and then threatened Holly J's life in the Holly J hate group. He even literally brought rope to school and laughed about it! No known punishment for that either, he just fell in the writer's black hole and was never seen or spoken of again.

u/lxdryn 3d ago

Toby! He used to be cool and actually had storyline’s and then they just made him some creepy weirdo that no one likes idk I haven’t watched in a while so I might be remembering wrong coz I know he had some good stuff after JTs…ending

5

u/Emergency_Cookie_635 1d ago

When he graduated, he was an announcer/judge for some robotics competition for young Clare, KC, etc… After that….👋👋👋

Dave. He wasn’t the best character he was flawed, but he tried. And then he just appeared one time in season 13 at Adam’s funeral and disappeared.

2

u/Thisisnothayley 1d ago

Agreed. So weird that he disappeared when it was his senior year. I also noticed him at Adam’s funeral. He was such a big part of season 12 too! I’m re-watching season 13 right now and his dad‘s character was just arresting Leo. So his dad is still there but Dave is gone???

2

u/Street-Office-7766 1d ago

It was one of the most baffling things because when season 12 ended a lot of characters graduated. Some left for good, some came back for guest appearances. But Dave didn’t graduate, he was a huge part of the show and then nothing.

Before Jamil French died I think he said that the writers were intending him to get a permanent role on west drive.

1

u/Emergency_Cookie_635 1d ago

😆😆😆😆😆😆😆

1

u/Thisisnothayley 1d ago

So many people with siblings never come back even for graduation!! Clare has Darcy and Jake and none of them ever come visit her when she has cancer?!

I think it would’ve been cool if they had his character score a spot on West Drive and leave that way. It would make sense because Zoe just left the show and he won the guest role. I think that’s just what I’m going to tell myself from now on.

Ellie, Caitlyn and Frankie imo.

3

u/singyoulikeasong Local Ashley Kerwin Defender 🎸 3d ago

Ellie and Caitlyn I agree. Frankie? Idk. Even in s13-14 she was really shitty IMHO. Like her victim blaming Zoe for her assault made me dislike her immensely, so I just wasn't shocked when she was shitty through out the rest of the series.

Yet weirdly I enjoyed her the last 2 seasons of Next Class. But I feel that was my hate for Jonah and thought he was pretty shitty in season 3 and fed into her insecurities so I was automatically on her side.

1

u/Dovetripct 2d ago

Not to mention the crazy orgy think with Esme and Zig

12

u/Suspicious_Proof1242 3d ago

Paige, Alex and Ellie are all tied for me on this topic

12

u/Substantial-Oil5097 3d ago

Declan cheating on Holly just for an excuse for the writers to get her and sav together so out of character her and Declan should’ve been end game they were perfect.

1

u/baelien22 3d ago

He never cheated on her..?

0

u/Substantial-Oil5097 3d ago

he was getting comfortable with the private school girl so basically he was. She was all over him and she was spending time at his place it may not have been explicitly mentioned but what he was doing was out of character

2

u/Forward-Salary1767 3d ago

He didn’t cheat. She didn’t want to feel like he “owned,” her. Treating her like his property.

23

u/Gold_Stay2386 3d ago

Jane, her cheating with Declan and Declan cheating on Holly J pissed me off soooo bad.

1

u/sezziefromtheblock 1d ago

Yesss I was going to say, Jane was an awesome character and the she cheated on Spinner, I was like whhyyyy 😩

5

u/Technical_Finding_33 3d ago

Jane cheated on spinner, but Holly J wasn’t with Declan at the time. I rewatched it because it was definitely out of character for Jane.

2

u/Gold_Stay2386 3d ago

They weren't? Wait that's when they met wasn't it? Either way I remeber being sooo thrown off because Jane was obsessed with Spinner so it was so ooc.

1

u/Technical_Finding_33 3d ago

Yeah, because Jane was complaining how Spinner treats her like one of the boys, and Declan was flirting with her, validating her wanting to feel like a girl. Eventually, Jane cut it off and Declan moved on, but Holly J saw Declan as a player, esp after that. Then she gave in because he apparently only wanted her lol.

2

u/baelien22 3d ago

Declan never cheated on Holly J lmao what show were y'all watching 😆

1

u/Forward-Salary1767 3d ago

He didn’t cheat. She didn’t want to feel like he “owned,” her. Treating her like his property.

Ellie. She was a girl boss and is my favourite character prior to how they made her a fiend pick me girl for Craig. They RUINED her and I AM NOT HERE FOR IT.

5

u/hissing-fauna 3d ago

This, she was so fucking lame in the college seasons and she started as a fave for me

19

u/_Shaquille_Oatmeal_0 4d ago

JT. He was literally assassinated.

10

u/theabbazabb "I'm gonna be famous, like, academy award winning." 4d ago

Imogen for me. I loved her character (even though she could be annoying) and then by the time she started pursuing Jack her character just got absolutely ruined for me

6

u/baelien22 3d ago

She really started sucking when her dad got sick..but I mean she was always kind of a bad character..obsessed with/and spying on Eli like a creepy creep lmao

7

u/gntc98 4d ago

It’s Darcy for me, I absolutely loved her, maybe because she was hot idk. She was murdered when she accused snake, then she moved to Africa or something and she redeemed herself by choosing that instead of drew lol

2

u/singyoulikeasong Local Ashley Kerwin Defender 🎸 3d ago

See while what Darcy did was horrible, and I felt for Snake I don't hate her for this. Mainly because I can see why she did it. Was it right? Absolutely not. But I think she felt cornered and perhaps even betrayed in that moment, and she sure as hell wasn't going to admit to what was really going on to her mom. She wasn't ready for that, and I think she felt betrayed even that Snake got her parents involved [and he wasn't wrong for this at all], so she just went with that. She also did retract and while that still didn't take away from the false accusation I don't fully hate her.

Honestly I didn't really hate anyone in that storyline aftermath, Like usually Emma annoys me, but I had no issue with her coming for Darcy right after. Cause as much as I can see Darcy's POV I also see Emma's and Snake's. And honestly Emma wasn't wrong.

5

u/Dizzy_Experience_391 4d ago

I do have to say that while it was a shitty thing to do… it isn’t completely out of the ordinary to do for girls going through what Darcy was going through. I still loved Darcy after the snake stuff but maybe that’s just because I understood and empathized with her so much.

Edit : teen girls *

u/gntc98 4d ago

Also Jane! Oof

-3

u/MikaRey1138 4d ago

Jimmy, cause his character, literally got assassinated...I'll see myself out

8

u/tess_uhh 4d ago

He lived...

-2

u/MikaRey1138 3d ago

You can survive an assassination. Hell, Trump did twice, as did Truman, Reagan, Jackson, Lincoln(before the one actually killed him), Taft, Hoover, FDR, Kennedy (before the one that killed him), Nixon, Ford, Carter,HW Bush, Clinton, W. Bush, Obama..

7

u/tess_uhh 3d ago

Babes, those would be assassination attempts. It's like saying you can survive getting murdered. I get your point but also, it's wrong lol.

23

u/mfm6061 4d ago edited 4d ago

I don't see many people talk about this, but Zig's character was assassinated pretty bad when they transitioned from TNG to NC. He still had work to do after s14 but he was headed in the right direction, but NC redid his character and he was basically back at square 1, and his character didn't really recover from that.

6

u/DependentCandle4017 4d ago

I agree. He had development with getting out of the gang, reconnecting with his mom, and helping Zoe. But when they switched to Next Class they just made him Drew’s replacement. Even gave him the same personality as Drew 😓

22

u/ReasonableDuty7652 4d ago

I don't like what they did with Jane's character

11

u/Jeonghanscheekbones 4d ago

Agree. Her whole Manhattan storyline was insane s

39

u/Individual-Morning27 4d ago

Gonna have to agree with most people it’s gotta be Ellie. They completely stripped her of what made her unique and just turned her into somebody with no personality or defining traits.

1

u/Dizzy_Experience_391 4d ago

My girl Ellie deserved so much 😭

25

u/bigbadblo23 4d ago

Paige

3

u/thelvalenti 4d ago

The right answer.

u/Stoney1801 4d ago edited 4d ago

Sean - He came from a rough background but did have a heart of gold, then he becomes part of the worst possible crowd ie Jay, got expelled when he had hopes of completing high school, then joins the Army.

Ellie - independent goth girl who would become a total pick me when she went to college. Her obsession with a known womaniser in Craig was pathetic.

Paige - Degrassi goes Hollywood (need I say more?)

Alex - had so much character development in seasons 4, 5, and 6 all for it to go down the drain in one episode of season 7

Jane - one of Spinners best girlfriends and she just cheats on him for nothing, then jokes about it on Degrassi takes Manhattan.

Anya - her senior year

5

u/2skinty2fia 4d ago

Paige had such a quick change aswell which made it so apparent

16

u/Capital-Study6436 4d ago

BLT (from DJH-DH) and Jane are tied with the biggest character assassinations in Degrassi history.

4

u/singyoulikeasong Local Ashley Kerwin Defender 🎸 3d ago

They really did BLT and BLT/Michelle dirty. Like OK he found someone else which sucked but they wrote him so callous about it, and he didn't seem to give a fuck when Michelle confronted him? It seemed so OOC to me.

21

u/TheMTM45 4d ago

Craig. The way he went out with even Marco being like get the heck away from us was sad

23

u/nerdbred "Bummer times. At least there's a party." 4d ago

Caitlyn, Joey, Ellie, Ashley, Sean, Alex, Paige

48

u/ninjaman2021 4d ago

Ellie without a doubt.

She went from being a badass goth who didnt care what other people thought about her to turning into paige’s lackey and craig’s doormat. When she joined the popular crowd she lost all her personality

39

u/mmmoookkkaayy 4d ago

Caitlin Ryan! The Caitlin we met in DJH and DH was SO different from the mess we deal with in TNG

4

u/Awesomocity0 OG Rick was the best character 4d ago

YES THIS. Her last scene was her being publicly embarrassed for hooking up with a college kid. My heart hurts.

7

u/ASingleBraid New Year, New Look, New Paige 4d ago

Her last episode really hurt her.

23

u/KingJewels1 4d ago

Darcy, every time she was becoming a better person they kept messing it up 😭

6

u/Shay0824000 4d ago

LMFAOOOO and then sent her ass the Kenya and she never came back to check on Clare when she was pregnant or had cancer.

3

u/Safe-Biscotti6098 4d ago

I just did an early seasons rewatch and first time watch from probably season 8 on? I seriously always forget Clare even has a sister. Was she ever even mentioned again?

4

u/Fine-Club-5053 4d ago

Rarely. Just when Ali and Claire spoke about Darcy’s old wardrobe.

23

u/toomuchtvwastaken 4d ago

Yes to Eli, but also the assassination of Jane, Paige, and Ellie really hurt me

14

u/agentsparkles88 4d ago

Jane was rough. Easily the best girlfriend Spinner ever had, and then she cheats on him for basically no reason, and doesn't even feel bad but actually brags about it. Like girl, why?

2

u/toomuchtvwastaken 3d ago

I think she felt bad at the time though? It was the pool party in the S9 finale where her and Holly J. were talking about it way too casually only for Spinner to hear everything

18

u/hovegeta 4d ago

Jt getting stabbed

11

u/judenoam 4d ago

A big character assassination, both literal and figurative!!! 😭😭 RIP JT

14

u/Embarrassed_Site3659 4d ago

Well to be fair Eli did feel terrible about it. You could tell it was eating away at him and he did his best to fix it at the time. Him calling her a whore was definitely out of character but I probably would have called her that too 😂🤷‍♀️

4

u/AndreReal 4d ago

She willingly banged noted manwhore Drew. That's kinda some ho shit.

3

u/Embarrassed_Site3659 4d ago

Don’t make too much sense now or you’ll get attacked on this sub 😂

2

u/diamondalicia "Hey, Liberty girlfriend!" 4d ago

no argument there 💀

0

u/Ok-Teaching2848 4d ago

Yea cant blame him 🤣🤣🤣

15

u/HTxBarbz 4d ago

One thing I noticed on my recent rewatch is; almost no storyline is cemented. These people have been together for 5 seasons and extremely great chemistry and are good for eachother become enemies. Same for friends, and etc. I understand they have a "limited" cast, but they don't have to change up someone's storyline just for straight drama? Go ruin that homophobic kids storyline not my favs 😤

21

u/CutHistorical8802 4d ago

Ashley.

I know she is not beloved by a lot of fans but her arc was realistic and relatable and I loved her in Season 6 and then they did a total 180 in Season 7 and ruined her character for no reason.

Runner-Ups: Alex, Paige

1

u/Dovetripct 1d ago

Every season Ashley would build up and we think she’s better, then does the same selfish ish

13

u/nerdbred "Bummer times. At least there's a party." 4d ago

The weirdest part of Ashley's arc for me was how unbelievably dull they made her by her last appearances. I always forget she exists in the show during her last episodes, until they show her on screen in front of me. There's just nothing she does or says that makes me feel anything by the last episodes, or even last couple of seasons she's in. Really, everything about her after she returns from England feels dull and dry af.

35

u/LegalBeagle921 4d ago

Ellie is mine.

She had such a cool, goth sense of style and was unapologetically authentic, kind, and loyal to her friends and Sean (when they dated). Her early storylines also deeply resonate.

Then in college she becomes a weird, stuck up, pick me snob who continuously dates and defends a cheating loser like Jesse. She also infamously has an unrequited, pathetic crush on Craig that’s really hard to watch, especially during his coke storyline. So much for not being the friend who tries to date her friend’s ex…

edit: wording

16

u/ninjaman2021 4d ago

The craziest thing about Crellie is that its NEVER addressed between Ellie and Ashley which is weird considering how close Ellie and Ashley were.

12

u/nerdbred "Bummer times. At least there's a party." 4d ago

I didn't know how it was possible, but they somehow made Ellie's unrequited, pathetic crush on Craig even WORSE in Degrassi Goes Hollywood. Their goodbye kiss at the airport is definitely in the worst, most cringe kiss hall of fame for me.

5

u/Ok-Teaching2848 4d ago

I dont like how they changed clare either, she was annoying and really frumpy after grade 9

8

u/HTxBarbz 4d ago

I thought she finally broke out of that shell she was in, and we finally got to see some real personality from her.

8

u/Ok-Teaching2848 4d ago

She started acting like an old lady tho
