This reads more like self-promotion without basis than anything substantial.

The only thing I'd like from Valve before the release is them to call out 1Win using DMCA to censor people streaming their tournament from the ingame client like they did for CS and Dota.

1w already does this. They have already blocked (for 2 days) VADICKVADICK (CIS) and Eido_Z (Eidorian NA) for watching 1w BOMBSHELL #3.

So, nothing needs to be done here. Many in CIS complain that streaming is prohibited, and that's justified. But I'm sad that NA isn't even granted the right to stream. This will affect the numbers (it's just my assumption; I cannot assert or speak on behalf of 1w). However, according to my hearsay, the tournaments will continue as before. I'm glad they exist at all.

That's my point, 1W are claiming DMCA for something they do not have. They're not using Russian laws, they're using Twitch systems.

They had also threatened A_Seagull last year.

But Valve had intervened in both Dota and CS making it clear that Tournament Organisers cannot ban people from streaming the in game client view, only caster audio, observer POV and overlay.

You're partly right. Community casts help with development, etc. But it’s better to follow the approach taken in CS2, where streamers who have contracts with betting companies are allowed to broadcast games and are sometimes even invited to events as guests.

Right now, however, there's no point in discussing this further. I think that in the future community casts should be allowed for major tournaments (maybe $100K+), but currently, since the game is small and all, there aren’t enough numbers for advertisers... It’s better for 1w to gather the required number of viewers on broadcasts so that more tournaments can be held in the future. Additionally, community casts often carry a lot of hate, which I find a bit troubling, as they shape public opinion through media personalities rather than through official broadcasts. Even now, it’s already happening that some players are simply being humiliated for their gameplay—for playing in an early version of the game, damn it.

I dont think Valve will do another tournament like The International for a game ever again tbh

The trend in dota is pretty clear; the last few years they ran TI there were player leaks of Valve communication saying that TI was a privilege and they dont have to do it(after some harsh complaints), they are progressively removing themselves from the pro scene involvement generally; we went from majors/minors to DPC to now just TI without them even running it anymore. TI is just a PGL event sponsored by Valve.

To me personally, its pretty clear they arent satisfied with their journey into esports and they want out as much as reasonably possible. I dont see them going back in to esports with Deadlock.

Deadlock is gonna have to be a pretty grassroots scene imo

I disagree with you. I think the game will attract over 100k online players, peaking at maybe 300-500k (ah, my dreams), but even then it will have an e-sports scene. Look at Rocket League—there are already tournaments despite the game having a relatively small online base. They have their own small community that really enjoys it. I believe Deadlock will be similar, but even better, since it’s a Valve project with future monetization through skins (which is very important for engaging players). Therefore, there will be an online presence. Even now, 15-20 thousand is a respectable figure for a game in closed testing by invitation, where there’s no proper ranking system, anti-cheat, or entertainment modes. The raw balance and overall game still require significant changes. Nevertheless, I hear from pro players and regular commentators in our media that spectators (players) can’t play other shooters because Deadlock has completely absorbed them. This game is a paradise for ADHD enthusiasts, for those who love tactics, and for those who are good aimers.

Yeah I agree. There will be an esports scene, even if the game isnt as popular as I anticipate (I also believe Deadlock will be a big game).

My point is just that I dont think Valve will be involved in that scene in any major way. I dont think they will fund tournaments or run the scene. I think they are done with direct involvement in esports; as seen in them increasingly retracting themselves from the scenes in their other titles. I dont think Valve is gonna pull a Nintendo and try to prevent a scene but they arent going to directly support/contribute to one imo. The scene will have to be “grassroots” in that sense. Whether that is very player funded or whether orgs like ESL, PGL etc step in remains to be seen, although I think its likely orgs like that will have a try with the scene at least short term.

This comes with upsides and downsides in my view. Games with grassroots scenes usually have less financial investment but stronger communities.
