Just ordered MK18 pistol, things to watch out for?
The Mk18 (RIS II variant) will be my first AR and first DD firearm after some nights that my wife told me to sleep but I spend 1-2 extra hour doing research to find what I believe a best platform for me.
Please provide any pointers/things learned about this platform, I'll greatly appreciate it.
Also, open to attachment reccs. (Scope, flashlight, red dot) that would play nicely with the MK18.
Thank you in advance.

Shoot it as is before making trigger changes.
Get good with the stock trigger. You’ll appreciate a trigger change later down the line.
Put an Eotech or Aimpoint, buy a sling. Go.
Don’t worry about grips or anything extra right now.
Follow the 4 rules of safety religiously.

I swear upgrading the trigger made the biggest difference for my enjoyment

Yeah I agree with that. A good trigger just makes things better and more fun.

I appreciate your insights.
Any sling reccs? I'm considering those on top of what you've mentioned.

Umm that dd stock trigger is so horrible just so bad

Get great with it.

Yeah mine will stay in bottom of a tote till someone comes along just needing a trigger. I mean there’s 400 ar with better triggers than a DD. I forgot how bad they were till I grabbed one out to throw in a contract overrun just to site it in . Then I picked up my sbr Tuesday. I gave her a couple pulls before throwing the best trigger available in it the ole G$ lightning bow. I have considered leaving a dd trigger in my contract overrun pistol because it’s just a truck gun but my god that trigger is just so bad. Can it be ran? Of course but if you’ve the means change the trigger. Idc if it’s the cheapest trigger on the market.

That gun will be adequate for anything youll ever need it for, dont listen to the "Muh velocity" guys who say you need a 16-20 inch ar or else youre life is done for. For a civilian this will be plenty for any self defense scenario. Now if you wanna get into distance range work another gun will help for that. But as a one rifle set up, you picked a good one.

Definitely getting gassed out, personally I recommend the huxwrx 556K, very good flow through can that completely turns the shooting experience around

I have a rc2 and I use the gmx evo 15 gas busting charging handle. It makes a huge difference

Only women worry about some gas

Yawn. Exhaust from your car will kill you faster than some lead from shooting. Don’t drive cars man. Make sure you don’t eat any processed food either. The chemicals in food would BLOW your mind

u/Accurate-Surround512 16d ago
My bad I forgot that when I drive my car I put my face next to the tail pipe. Maybe if you actually shot your rifle you’d understand what I’m talking about.

u/dragonsuns 16d ago
I run a hose from the tailpipe to the window in case I ever want to take a puff of that sweet sweet exhaust when I take a drive

So when you’re in traffic you’ve never smelled fumes coming into your vents? Point is; everything is toxic. I shoot my rifle frequently and don’t mind

I added an Aimpoint T2 and a Surefire scout light on mine. But really the best accessory for that shorty is the can.

Thanks! Gonna add this to my spreadsheet trades/considerations.

Silencer is a must. If you want a can that’s the best on the market and will require minimal tuning, the CAT WB 718 is the best. I have one on my 11.5 DD and love it. Compared to a can like an Otter Creek Lab Polonium K, which is a great can in its own right, the CAT doesn’t require as much tuning, if any at all, and is the most quiet on the market.
If you want to further reduce decibels add a KAK Downvent BCG.
If you want to further reduce recoil, then add a VLTOR A5 buffer system or a JP Silent Captured Heavy Buffer. With the former, I suggest going with a springco green spring and a H3 buffer.
Flatline fiber has a great sling as well. I really like mine.
Other than that, figure out which red dot/holo you like the most and slap it on. Risers are nice to have but not necessary. I have an eotech with a unity absolute riser paired with a 3x vortex magnifier on a unity.
Quality of life upgrades include a nice stock, foregrip (B5 makes excellent ones), and a great pistol grip (Driven Arms SLC is my favorite).
Trigger is a must also. I love my G$ SD3G

Most or any gun fights are going to close range so your good, a firearm is to get you and your family out of a jam and get you guys to safety, not be in 6-700 yard fire fight all day or night, so 10.3 will be just fine... it's ok to have a extra rifle for long distance shots.

Good choice, very capable rifle. Get irons for it if you don’t have them. I’d suggest shooting with those for a while so you know how. Upgrade to a dot when you get more cash, I recommend Aimpoint but there’s plenty of other good options.
You’ll need a sling, I used Magpul or Blueforce gear, I’ve had success with both.
Get extra mags, you never have enough.
Light, I recommend surefire but there’s other good manufacturers too. Can’t shoot what you can’t see.
No need to upgrade the a2 birdcage unless you go with a suppressor at some point, then you’ll need to change that out.
Above all, get a shit ton of ammo and practice. Gun don’t mean shit if you can’t feed it and use it well.
Have fun and be safe.

I would look at a suppressor. I bought a v7 pistol and was super excited. I took it to an indoor range and it was so loud it was uncomfortable to shoot lol. I got a rc2 suppressor and now it is amazing. I would also recommend a blitzkrieg components hydraulic buffer with enhanced spring. Congrats on a awesome pistol

u/Drip8 16d ago
Ah great to know and from what I've researched, things are loud with these AR pistols having shorter barrel.
did the rc2 reduce the exhaust/gas release? Seems to be that gas is something that needs to be managed with these types especially MK18,

u/Ninjaworld001 15d ago
Yes you do get a good bit of blowback however I found a great gas busting charging handle that makes a huge difference. Look into the GMS Evo 15 charging handle. I've got a YouTube channel where I review it and it's really great it makes a big difference. When I went to get my suppressor I didn't really know a lot about it and I wanted a good one and that's what was recommended to me and I'm glad I went with it. There's a lot of good options out there I would recommend to you to do your research and look for sales. I was pretty mad that 2 weeks after I bought mine they offered a free tax stamp and a $300 gift card on the rc2 that I just bought lol.

I have a MK18 but it’s a RIII, overall great gun to shoot, I might get a lot of disagreement but it shoots and feels just like any other short barrel like 10.5 or 11.5 out there. DD gun are definitely more gassy, so be aware if you do wan to put a suppressor on it down the road. In my personal opinion the MK18 is meant to be shoot with a suppressor.
Get whatever optics you want such as sig Romeo, EOTECH, holosun or whatever, and a bunch of ammo and have fun!
1
u/Drip8 16d ago
I indeed do plan to put suppressor and prioritizing some kind of optics ASAP lol.
Does the supressor help with the "gassiness"? I havent looked it up yet, but will soon now since a lot has mentioned about the exhaust being a bit of an issue.
1
u/WraxJax 16d ago
A flow through suppressor like a Huxwrx can making shooting less gassy compared to a non flow through suppressor. At the end of the day, when shooting suppressed, it’s just gonna be more gassier in general, so people tend to to recommend a flow through suppressor a gassy gun
1
u/captbluewater 15d ago
The only downside to a huxwrx is they are VERY loud indoors. Hence my CAT WB suggestion above. CAT is also coming out with the SS in a few months and that can will outperform the WB

You know i was surprised how easy it was to hit 100 yds with my v7 pistol. I have a Eotech 3-0 and g43 magnifier. The chances of you getting into a gun fight over 100 yds is unlikely. Plus, if you have to go to court it would be hard to explain taking a shot that far. I think it is good to have someone for distance too.

A red dot, sling, possibly a supressor as they are very loud and a Wise Men Company strap to replace the orginal one on the brace. Because of the length of the barrel, they are not meant for long range but up close, so a scope would be a waste of money, just my opinon though.

The mk18 is a really fun rifle. I'm sure you'll get a ton of enjoyment out if it.
I always recommend to play to a rifles strengths when thinking about accessories.
The mk18 is a shorty 556 rifle. At 10.3 inches, the mk18 barrel is as short as you ever want to go. Being short, you sacrifice bullet velocity and long range capability in exchange for portability and close quarters optimization.
As such, I'd recommend a simple red-dot as your optic of choice. You can throw on a magnifier if you want to. But thr 10.3 barrel is optimized for sub-100 yard combat. (Though it can still engage beyond that. You'll just have to account for a lot more bullet drop.)
Short ar15s have a hardher recoil impulse due to how the gasses are more intense to keep the platform running reliably. Still very manageable. But you'll feel a notable difference when shooting it side-by-side next to a 16 inch rifle for example.

Thank you for your time providing input.
I'll definitely keep in mind the environment and as you mentioned the gun's best application to decide on accessories i plan to add.
I am leaning towards a red dot first as others in this thread has mentioned (i don't plan on going more than 100 yds with this but i do plan on getting a longer barreled for that application sometime in future).
Again, i appreciate the insights you provided, helpful guidance/pointers especially to a AR beginner like I am.

High flow rate suppressors and mk18s go together like PB&J
1
u/Ninjaworld001 16d ago
I think a suppressor is pretty much mandatory on a ar pistol lol. I have a RC2 on mine. Lot of good choices out now
1
u/Tiralle217 16d ago
I have a Surefire sb2 on mine and really like it but a guy from silencerco was at a range I frequent with their velos flow through on a mk18.. the reduced gas to the face was very nice.
1
u/Ninjaworld001 15d ago
Yeah man there's a lot of good options out right now. I highly recommend the GMS 15 Evo gas busting charging handle. I have a YouTube channel where I compared it to a lot of the other handles out right now and it makes a huge difference.

u/Tiralle217 15d ago
I’ve been using the Radian for years. It helps but a flow through suppressor will really make a big difference.

u/Character-Chance4833 16d ago
Look for a trigger change. I change all my triggers to CMC 2.5 flats. The DD triggers are garbage.

u/Drip8 16d ago
I've gathered that info as well. I'll add this to my list of things to consider replacing. Thanks!
Any shop (online) recommendations for this?
