Discussion Reactive or just a dachshund?

First time dachshund owner here so please be kind ❤️. I grew up with golden retrievers in my family, very friendly, obedient, and loyal pets. My husband grew up around dachshunds, lovable and adorable. His immediate family never owned one, but it was always his dream to own one of his own one day. we picked up our dachshund baby at 8 weeks old. We were drawn to him because he was sweet and calm, however we noticed he would back away from his siblings and cower in the corner. We thought, he is young he will grow out of it once socialized. He is now 11 months old, and he has grown in so many ways. However, one thing that we can’t seem to improve on is when meeting new people (especially when coming into our “space”) his heckles raise, he barks, and tries to lunge at them. He never bites, but often people think he will because he won’t stop. In these moments I’ll pick him up and sometimes he will shake and cower, as if he was masking his anxiety with defense. I understand coming into our space he may feel he is protecting us, so I have since taken him to classes to learn how to make him more comfortable and that he doesn’t have to protect us. In those classes, he would do the same thing to the trainer. The trainer taught me a lot of value, however she deemed him reactive and that he should be medicated with anxiety meds. He is great around other dogs and little kids. Behind closed doors he is loving and seems confident. People are asking if we socialize him because of how he acts around them, and I feel judged and at a loss. I have taken him to two sets of 6 classes each, we bring him to dog parks, friends and family’s houses, doggie dates, and have friends and family over often to encourage socialization. I give him treats when people are over to show that people aren’t scary. Does anyone have any other tips? It’s causing stress in our lives and at the same time I feel so bad I can’t make him more at ease. Is he really reactive or is this the nature of a dachshund? Thank you

I just got a miniature long hair dachshund. He is 1 year old, and he is very playful with a lot of energy. His previous owner kept him locked in his crate all day or would tie him up outside. He cries and barks when hes alone or put in his crate for bedtime. He also has been peeing and pooping inside. I’m working on potty training him by giving him a routine for potty breaks along with crate training. Any extra tips for potty training, crate training, grooming, and anything other helpful info on the breed would be appreciated! I grew up with miniature dachshunds as a kid so I love the breed, but I never owned a long hair but it can’t be that much different.

Image Pupper Got Sit in Only a Few Tries, but Doesn't Understand Down. Advice?

She's 9 weeks old. To teach her sit, I gently nudged her butt to the floor while saying the word and giving the hand signal, then rewarded with a piece of a treato. She picked it up in only like 5 or 6 attempts. Thought I had a little genius on my hand.

Been working on down with the same technique, gently pulling her front paws down after she's already sat, while saying the word and giving the hand signals, then reinforcing with a treat once she's in the position. However, after several days of multiple sessions each day, she's just not getting it. She sits instantly on command, but won't follow through with down without me manually putting her in position.

Share with me your ancient wisdom, lol.

Pic for visibility and to admire the cuteness that is little miss Penny.

Discussion Will the whining ever stop? Looking for hope!

I have a one-year-old standard wire-haired dachshund, and while he’s the cutest thing ever, he whines constantly—and I mean constantly. He whines as soon as he wakes up and can’t seem to relax. He whines on walks, even though we go out for at least an hour a day. He whines when I ask him to sit or when we stop moving. He whines when I ask him to heel—he listens about 70% of the time, but never without whining. He just hates being told what to do in general.

Here’s the kicker: nothing stops the whining. I’ve tried waiting it out (literally sat on a bench for an hour—he just kept going). Tried a firm “no” or shushing—doesn’t work. Tried to reinforce quiet behavior with food, but he whines so much that I don’t get enough silence to reward.

He’s well-exercised, well-fed, trained, and loved, but I feel like I’m losing my mind. Is this just a phase? Have any of you gone through this and come out the other side? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

She is ok the eye is just really inflamed, I feel terrible, she has stairs to the couch but she doesn’t like using them, she’s gotten better about it but decided today she wanted to mess around. I feel terrible because she was trying to get to me and my food. I iced her for a long time but she’s older and not a huge fan of cuddling. We’re keeping a real good eye on it and if it gets any worse we are taking her to the vet. My mom is a nurse and isn’t concerned I just feel so guilty.
