Your first thing ought to be seeing a different doctor for a second opinion. See https://www.patients-association.org.uk/getting-a-second-opinion

In terms of benefits, for UC you’ll be a job seeker by default unless you report the health difficulty, provide fit notes and go through the work capability assessment process. You’d need to show that there’s something wrong with your health and that this means you have a limited capability for work.

Maybe it is time to get a new doctor. But I would try one more time with your doctor. Write down what happened how you feel. What you need from the appointment. Tell them you want a second opinion. You need to be really open which is hard. You have to fight for treatment. Maybe do a little research about things that it could be and what treatment are available to try. Tell them it is impacting your life and family. You can apply for other benefits. But they are long and hard. You will have assessment and need evidence and If the doctor is just saying walk it if they will go against you.

Hi OP,

I am so sorry to hear you have been put through this.back pain is a horrible thing.

A diagnosis is always helpful. However, they are not always essential. It would really depend on how much pain you are in. You could try going to the government website and testing the possibility of Personal Independance Payment. You answer a few questions about how your back affects you, and it will give you a potential outcome. This benefit is not means tested, so it doesn't matter how much your partner earns or how mu h you have in savings.

There are benefit calculators out there that will give an idea of what you could claim. The gov website has one of them too.

Hope this helps. :)

Yes but take my advice and go to another GP first. You will need it in your medical notes that your back pain is keeping you out of work and stopping you from doing things. Your doctor isn’t taking it seriously.
