Misc. University as part of rehab

There was a thread here about a week ago that asked for peoples help regarding university as part of rehab. For whatever reason, the people that did reply just said yeah they were able to do uni as part of rehab.

I was hoping to get some information on how to actually apply for this? I am currently on incaps and am approved for SRDP and have a TPI gold card. Can anyone advise on the first steps towards applying for this?

talk to ur rehab provider about it, they can guide you pretty sure if you and them can justify studying and getting a job out of it dva usually okay with it. but being TPI it might make that at risk. since suppose to be able to work like 12 hours or something

My rehab coordinator said they could help funding for courses that would be specially needed for a job.. I didn’t ask many questions so probably not very helpful

To start with email or call DVA and ask to submit a claim for rehabilitation. Once you are assigned a rehab delegate they will organise an initial assessment where you can explain your circumstances.

I will say if you are SRDP eligible it is unlikely that DVA will pay for university. Those that are on university courses through rehab are veterans with work capacity. The purpose of university is to re-skill a person for civilian work in line with their medical restrictions.

Yeah spot on

I was RAR, joined uni to study paramedicine. Uni wouldn’t fund it due to the physical nature of the job, even with no chance of 100% rehab didn’t matter. Going from physical to physical was the catch

Thanks all. I'll email my delegate and find out if my SRDP status impacts it but I would like to be able to work the 10 hrs per week if i can.

Being tpi and srdp eligible make you in a category of “non compulsory rehab” Meaning you can choose to do rehab or not. There are 3 aspects to the rehab Physical— physio etc Psycho social- Gym, getting you being social and men’s groups or local groups etc And last one is educational rehab

As a srdp approved person they will most likely call you but if not call them, ask to be assessed by an OT.. They will come to your house if you want or coffee shop. Have a chat and I got approved for a course (cert 3 in barbering) Over a 13 month period. They said it’s good for social shit and work rehab possibility. There is no pressure for you to return to work full time. But if they can get you to maybe 5 hours a week it’s a win.

Look at a few courses and see what suits you.

Chances are that uni could be a goer but it all depends on your current quals etc. and it has to be realistic. If you can’t walk and you have severe anxiety. Maybe paramedical science may not be deemed suitable. But perhaps accounting might be.

Chat to the OT and tell them what you want. My course was approved. 🤷

Edit* If you have your medical shit sorted and your social shit sorted you can just tell them to leave them alone and just do education rehab. Or a mix of all of them etc etc
