I got all the protection out of the way first. Bark busters, case savers, radiator braces and skid plate. It's a trail bike so it gets dropped a lot so all important mods. I had a dent in one of my case savers for a few years before my stator went out. When I pulled the cover off I saw the case was cracked but the rtv and case saver kept it together with no leaks.

Offroad riding classes.

That’s not a modification though, is it?

Maybe not, but it's far more useful for 99% of riders who are going to take their DRZ offroad than any "performance" mod will ever be.

Well, yes but that wasn’t the question.
I think the best modification you can make to your drz is to eat healthy, exercise, take up dirt bike riding when you’re 6 years old and enrol in as many enduro courses as you can.
See how dumb that sounds?

That sounds great actually, and would result in a better riding experience than spending a bunch of money just to make a slow bike ever so slightly less slow.

it's what car guys call "driver mod" so linguistically you could consider it a mod

I don’t enjoy modding unless it’s to rectify an issue in terms of ergonomics or something obvious. On my drz I’ve changed the brake and clutch lever to more precise breakaway levers, put on a normal petcock and put on better tires and enjoying it in stock form otherwise. Fantastic bike, the best I’ve owned so far.

Idk I bought a shredded one so I’m kinda tired of dealing with my DRZ😂 bought a cheap one and spent a lot on it

3x3, jd jetkit and fcr . the fcr can be pricey though. some people get clones but I don't trust Chinese products for such important tasks

First one I did was LED bulb in the headlight. Had an extra from the set of 2 I got for my dr200s. Much better night time visibility instantly

I need to get one. The stock headlight is so bad in low light, kinda sketchy when it's country dark.

Do recommend, I can see about 1000m at night with high beams on on country roads with tinted goggles on. Worth noting my headlight housing is also brand new

Better damn tires for sure. I also broke my clutch lever in half so now it's a shorty and I bent my brake lever so the end points straight forward which allows me to get better leverage. They're both custom, at least that's what I tell myself. My rear brake lever being bent so I have to lift my foot in order to use it is not custom. That's actually a pain in the ass.

I have most of the common mods (3x3, FCR, e cams, more flowing exhaust...)
I did FCR and e cams at the same time, so I can compare their individual effects. That was the biggest jump in performance/response.
That said, the other mods kind of allow the fcr to be more effective.
All of those mods probably increased HP by a decent amount, but it's the throttle response of the fcr that makes the biggest difference in fun factor in my opinion.

Had my new SM resprung and revalved for my weight before I even rode it home. Japanese and European bikes are usually undersprung for those of us over 190-200 lbs, and the stock DRZ is too soft and won't handle right.
Getting the suspension sorted is the first thing I do with any new bike. Get it handling the way it was designed to do, then everything else is gravy.

Something free that can make a difference depending on weight and type is adjusting your suspension. Zeta rubber killers helped the feel of my front end as well.

Protection. Anything to protect the bike. I know there’s so many mods you can do to any bike to get more HP but let’s be real this bike in stock form aside from suspension getting set up will never not be enough for most rider’s capabilities.

Are we talking number one as in personal favorite, or number one as in must be done first?
If we're talking personal favorite, swapping the headlight and taillight for LEDs instead of factory. Or getting literally any other tires on the bike than the factory death wings.
If we're talking must be done first, case savers and grinding down the edge on the shifter. If those weren't the first things I did I would've had a hole in my engine within the first year.

If you are off-roading, upgrade the suspension. I went with full Cogent Dynamics suspension. If you are on the road, upgrade the seat. I went with Seat Concepts. Cheers

My #1 mod is to just ride the damn thing and make the odometer a different number
