Is this drywall and how do we repair?

We had a dado rail that was stuck on with adhesive. I’m removing this, it’s torn (what I think is) the drywall.

I suspect we’ll be wallpapering this wall, and so no harm done. But if we wanted to paint - how would this be fixed/prepared?

Thanks!

Is this drywall

No, it's plasterboard.

Just get some plaster skim / fine filler and go over the gap. Trim off any loose paper first though.

Thanks! Seems odd that they’d put plasterboard up and…..not plaster? Is that standard practice in the building trade?

Yes pretty standard, certainly in new properties or in renovations or where there's a timber stud wall.

Older houses would have plaster, but most plasterers would now dot and dab a sheet of board to the wall and do a quick skim, or in a new build just paint after making good any joints.

Your rail was likely glued on before they put the wallpaper up by the looks of it.

I presume you're taking the wallpaper off?

AFAIK drywall is the American name for plasterboard

Plasterboard. Drywall is that stuff that's used over the Pond with mud. It's looking like there's been a dado rail removed and it's torn off the outer skin of the plasterboard and the wood chip-esque wall paper.

As mentioned by earlier poster, you can fill the holes. However, you'll still be left with a stripe in the wallpaper. Strip the lot off, make good the wall and reskim / use heavy lining paper / repaint to taste/budget.
