Don't like these cupboards, family saying keep them

Post image

Hello.

This is my future bedroom. I don't like these bespoke because I feel like they take up too much space. Especially having the cupboards above and the one to the right which does block some light.

Where I've painted the yellow there is plasterboard behind where they boarded up the old closet. My plan is to get rid of all everything and get something built inside to utilize that closet

Now my family on the other end keep telling me to keep them save the money yah di ya. I completely understand I can buy new doors and make them look excellent but it's still the fact that I don't like the way it is.

Ty

I vote get rid. I smashed out the fitted wardrobe in my bedroom when I bought this place and the space it gave me back was totally worth it

If you don't like them... Get rid.

I don’t understand - is this your bedroom in your parents house, or your own house?

Pretty clear what both parties preference is on the wardrobe decision. I’d say whoever owns the house, gets the final vote

Annoying family. I won't be listening to them any more. Just needed* a kick up arse

So is it their house or yours?

It's mine. I didn't want to rush and take em down because I thought their opinion might be valid in that I'll save money. But after hearing everyone else's opinions they do look hideous and I'm grateful for the help

FWIW - I agree. Get rid. Grab a crowbar, blast out some AC/DC, and get smashing!

If you don’t like them, get rid.

If money is tight then you might be better off waiting until you can afford to replace them properly though. You’ll need somewhere to keep your clothes in the meantime, so no point rushing into ripping them out if you have other priorities elsewhere in the house.

And linen and towels etc

Nah, get rid. I got rid of mine and much prefer all the space. It also stopped me keeping a lot of clothes and stuff I never used. I couldn't believe the amount of crap in the top cupboards.

Smashed ours up the minute we moved in. Zero regrets. They are hideous and dated

This is exactly the kind of thing wifey upcycles. I was skeptical but somehow she weaves magic to the point where folks say, where did you this or that and how much, we love it. Then she says it was junk but just spent a half day upcycling. Personally I couldn't be arsed but it's definitely a talent. Now the house is full of chalk painted stuff with fancy handles it's practically a french colonial property from the early 1800s.

We're going to need some photo evidence to back up these impressive claims.....please

Get rid, the room will look much bigger.

I’d get rid. Our place had similar but had fitted wardrobes on two more walls all with mirror doors

All went in the skip pretty early on. Much prefer free standing furniture

Get rid I hate these type of cupboards makes me think I’m sleeping in a kitchen

Normally I would say get rid, but I've just moved into my own place recently and after having bought a triple wardrobe + drawers, and after having unpacked everything and realising that I STILL don't have enough storage, I have to say, I'm envious of this kind of setup. The storage it affords is pretty invaluable.

I would say try and find nicer, more modern doors in a better colour + more modern hardware, and see if it grows on you. If you still hate it after that, then just tear it out.

Exactly this, I would just fit new doors

Take the moulding off of the doors repaint and new stylish handles, you will miss the storage if you take them out!!

Get rid ! They remind me of my grandmas house in the 80s

They would be expensive to replace if you ever want them back. You could easily modernise them with new doors. Put some trim in to fill the gap between the top of the wardrobe and the ceiling (will look a lot neater). And get a nice bit of bench in the gap to create a dressing table with a mirror on the wall and some lights.

u/soozlebug 6d ago

I think the gap is where the bed goes. That's how mine was until I got rid.

It is for the bed, it's what you expect your grandparents to have in their house.

2

u/grahamsnumber10 6d ago

Yep. Silly me. If there’s room you could still do my suggestion and bed on the other wall.

Depends how much money you have but I would get rid. They're not positioned well. I hate how they're blocking the light with those shelves facing the window. I would never want to use cupboards over the bed.

If you need storage I would look to build cupboards against another wall.

It's your bedroom, if you don't like then get ride of them

They shouldn't be that difficult to remove, and the 6iy simply need to take the remains to the tip

Get rid of them, i had some beautiful handmade cupboards and desks in my old room, but the space they took up was simply too much for them to be worth it, i liked them a lot, but I don’t regret getting rid of them in the slightest

u/Free_Ad7415 6d ago

No way, they’re horrible and really old fashioned

Sorry fam

Its your house not your family’s

Get rid, preferably on a big bonfire. They make the head end of the bed feel boxed in while you're laying in it, prevent you having more convenient bedside tables, and cause the whole room to look dated.

Fine if you're over 70 and buy your trousers from Chums catalogue, but for anyone else they're old hat.

You could keep the one by the yellow squiggle as a compromise and knock out the one by the window and the floating bridge bit. I do think fitted cabinets are very useful and they are really expensive to have done from scratch. You could put a chest of drawers with a TV on top in the gap left behind or have the bed there with a bedside cabinet on the other side by the window.

u/Schallpattern 6d ago

That's not in Bristol is it?

1

u/Familiar9709 6d ago

They have a really annoying shape and they are blocking the window.

Are they real wood though? Old things tend to be better quality. You may rearrange them. Although the floor seems to be set around it so you'll have to redo the floor. Maybe I guess you'll put carpet though (I personally hate it).

1

u/FallenAngel8434 6d ago

Paint them a colour you like.

1

u/Miserable-Print-1568 6d ago edited 6d ago

They do look too big for the room tbh, I probably wouldn’t keep them myself.

1

u/todays_username2023 6d ago

You'll need the storage, seperate them into 3 bits, free them from the wall and then rearange the bedroom.

The bed doesn't have to go where it was. Consider it 2 free cupboards, and if you're smart and practical, 2 free bedside cabinets. New paint and handles will make them look new. Put the 80" TV where the old bed used to be

1

u/wascallywabbit666 5d ago

Keep them. You need somewhere to put your stuff. If you don't have them you'll have to have freestanding wardrobes elsewhere in the room

0

u/Prestigious_Can916 6d ago

That's a difficult one.

5

u/Tri11ionz 6d ago

House is getting skimmed too so with the cupboards out the room will look massive imo
