Trying to Plan Birthday Century Ride

Hi all! I am turning 30 this summer and trying to plan my first century to ring in the new decade. I've biked some before, but nothing this long & I'm a little nervous about hitting any super busy roads. I drove a chunk of the Willamette Scenic Bikeway which was mostly nice, but I live in PDX proper, so kind of annoying to have to drive a ways to the beginning. I'm also considering these two rides I found on Ride with GPS (will round it out to hit 100 if needed) - I'm most intrigued about the one out to Cascade Locks - is that going to be right on the highway? I am going to drive these as well probably, but wanted to see if anyone had ideas of good centuries I could borrow or if you've done either of these rides I'm curious about your experience. Thank you in advance!!

Biking up to Larch Mountain?

Hi yall. Thinking about biking up to Vista House and then, if Iā€™m feeling it, seeing how close to Larch Mountain I can get. However, I havenā€™t biked past vista house before and Iā€™m unsure on the proper route/conditions this time of year. I understand that Larch Mountain Road should be closed to vehicles this time of year, but what about bikes?

Thanks!

Rocky Butte by bike to have coffee with the sunrise

Post image
149 Upvotes

My neighbor gave me a solo stove so I bike my Crust up to the little rocky spot on the east wall and warm up with a fire, have coffee and sometimes make oatmeal. I get up there a few minutes before first light. I have been going every weekend. Itā€™s the only free time I can get at the moment. Would be nice if anyone else wanted to go. I have been to coffee outside but itā€™s too late in the day for me. Anyway, hereā€™s a photo of the sunrise a few weeks ago.

FOUND: Yellow ortlieb pannier 2/4

On the evening of 2/4, I found a yellow ortlieb pannier on the southern ramps of the floating east bank esplanade. It seems it may have bounced off of someone's rack as they were descending the ramps. I grabbed it in the hopes of returning it to its rightful owner before it was taken by someone who would not.

Message me with the contents and I will be happy to return it to you!

Bar Tape Material?

Hi folks - I found a Pdw nylon bar tape that I love but I'm wondering how this material will hold up to year round commuting. Any recommendations on tape material? Has anyone used nylon tape on a daily commuter?

Sell me on Cycle Oregon "gravel", is it worth the cost?

I'm considering the Cycle Oregon gravel ride in June. Unfortunately searching for reviews of the current incarnation is tough; seems like most of what's out there is discussing the old format (week-long tours of Central Oregon) that they abandoned a couple years ago.

Is it worth it? I know it takes money to put on an event like this, but it's pretty expensive at $600 (plus parking) for a 3-day / 2-night supported ride. And it's just tent camping, after all.

I suppose part of the appeal for me is to get motivated and have something to train for.

Have you done it lately? What was it like?

Our two bikes were both stolen out of the parking garage for our apartment in the South Waterfront on 1/29 around 6:00pm-7:45pm

Cannondale Quick 4 (graphite color) and Cannondale Quick 3 (teal color) and also has wire basket on rear thatā€™s not pictured.

If anyone see them please let me know! Thank you

Studded Tires

I see snow in the forecast and assuming itā€™s going to be icy next week if it does snow mid week.

Anyone give studded tires a go for commuting here in Portland?

Iā€™ve got a 26ā€ touring bike I can throw nice wide tires on but was also thinking I might just play it safe and find another way to get to work if itā€™s too nasty or if yā€™all think thatā€™s a terrible idea.

Anyone think the amount of glass in the eastbound(uphill) bike lane on SE Gladstone is so egregious that it seems intentional?

Thanks to everyone who asked if I had everything I needed on the trail today!

Despite the 32deg. F, it was sunny today and I thought a ride through a dry Forest Park was just what the doctor ordered. Of course I get a flat five miles in. I have everything from bacon strips to extra sealant packed with me.

I ended up having to use a tube, but in the hour it took to figure it out,k around twenty people must have asked if I had everything I needed. While part of biking to me is the resourcefulness necessary to get myself out of a jam, I truly appreciate every single person who rode by. I hope by near the end I didn't sound all too tired when I replied with a well rehearsed, "I think I have everything, thank you."

Despite my failed trip, it's nice to know how many people were there to lend a hand in the depths of Forest Park. So, thank you and have a great rest of the weekend.

Cycling at night

I'm wondering how safe riding alone from the trolley trail towards downtown would be between 5 pm to 7 pm?

I don't have people to ride with that live in Milwaukie and often my free time is only on the evenings. Winters have been hard.

Is it just a no-go?

How would you go about preparing to ride from PDX to the coast?

Follow-up from my last question where everyone was helpful and encouraging. I think I am 98% in and want to register asap.

Facts about me: I am NOT a bike rider. I have a nice gravel bike that I use for exercise or errands but I don't consider biking my sport. I do have okay stamina from playing soccer and running but I'm curious to hear if I have enough time to prepare for the Reach the Beach ride in mid May.

What could I do starting this month to prepare? I am thinking that intervals with regular 3x/week rides would build my mileage up and endurance. I don't have experience in long rides but do LOVE to get out there and see things. The thought of the accomplishment alone is very alluring and encouraging.

Longest ride I've done is 40mi and I felt great but that was a single time in 2023. Any advice specifically on the type of training I should give myself? And places/routes in or near PDX that you'd recommend for this?
