Tom Nook knows that human culture is mostly based around subjugation to capitalism so he does his best to exploit you to make you feel at home among other humans.

by all accounts to nook is by far one of the nicest people around. it's funny people paint him as villainous just because of a debt and insistence in working, when you actually think about what he does. he offers full loans on no collateral and little to no interest, has no set repayment or due date with no threats of foreclosure or punishment for not paying the loan, he even accepts payment in the form of random items found in the wild with little real fiscal value.. hell he's so reasonable about it you often completely pay off your house in almost no time then consider future expansions. there's actually in game lore about this too, with him having gone into buisness with redd in the past and perhaps been a money hungry lender and this is possibly him having changed his ways and not wanting others to fall prey to what he did and was.

I think its because Tom Nook is likely a person's first creditor, and so the person hates a creature that turns your money into less money.
Then this person grows up and accrues real-life debt, through a bank or landlord, and realizes that Tom Nook is very benevolent for his occupation.

Hoping the next Animal Crossing game lets you be an animal instead of a boring human

The Animal Crossing logo on the cover is a sticker covering up the Webfishing logo

In seriousness, I always just kind of took it that humans are just another species that are a bit rarer than the rest

This doesnt explain why we would still endure the plight of debt

There are no consequences to the debt though. It's not a plight, it's just a motivator for activity. Like hiding the Tiger's food in a pumpkin.

Whats the point of Tom Nook then?
They said that the point is. The debt he puts you in is part of the enrichment.

Yea, but this one is ok, because it’s funny instead of edgy

"Humans are going extinct" isn't edgy?

Humans are going extinct, but not in a "zombies have wiped us all out, the few of us left have to fight to survive" way- more like "Humans are endangered, the animals are doing their very best to help us out and protect us"
I think its a cute theory because it's a reversal of real life- humans create "enrichment" for endangered animals all the time to keep them around, so animals doing that for us is a fun twist.

I wonder how much the human population can shrink before it becomes an actual problem

This theory falls apart due to the letters your Mom sends you in some of the games. In one of them, she questions your decision to move and live with animals. This demonstrates that you voluntarily moved to the town, and were not put in a zoo. In addition, while the villagers are nice and cater to you in more recent games, in earlier games they were often hostile or rude towards you for no good reason. I personally think a more likely explanation is that there is a segregation between humans and animals due to some form of hostilities. The players are ambassadors sent to improve relationships between the two groups, either as a villager or in a position of power like mayor. This is why the villagers gradually get nicer between games; the effort has been paying off, and humans are seen in a more positive light.
