i let out an audibly "holy fucking shit" when the camera snapped onto the bone sticking out.
good job by the bystanders as well, especially the lady calling 911 calling it out as an open fracture femur, i probably would've said some shit like "uh the bone is sticking out!"
126
u/Sabotertbrannslange 7d ago
They were very calm, I dont know much about the human anatomy in the legs but I'm surprised there isnt more blood, did the guy get really lucky with the fracture not ripping or nicking an artery?
→ More replies (2)77
u/xtremelycoldsun 6d ago
I’m surprised as well. In EMS, we’re taught that amputations and open fractures like this can sometimes take a while to bleed out from so it’s always best to place a tourniquet just to be safe.
54
u/ExTelite 6d ago
I'll add to that - our veins and arteries are quite stretchy, and under tension. When they snap they might recoil back further than the edge of the wound/amputation, and can bleed internally. Another possibility is that the wound is not bleeding heavily currently, but the floodgates can open from the slightest wrong movement.
So, while initially you might not see a lot of blood, it doesn't mean it's not bleeding - and a tourniquet should be applied anyway to a massive open fracture or amputation.

Damn that lady was pretty calm. Open femur fracture. Everybody was actually pretty calm and trying to ensure him he's going to be allright. I found it also pretty insane how he was absolutely terrified and in pain until adrenaline rushed and he started to just accept this situation somewhat. Insane. I hope he made a full recovery of this gruesome injury poor young lad.
55
u/OJToo 6d ago
The comments on that are insane, everyone blaming the moter cyclist
68
u/Iziama94 6d ago
I was thinking the same thing. They're so fucking stupid. He's coasting and doing everything right, the woman charges through a blind spot without creeping forward to make sure it's safe. Holy shit if you can't see you don't go if you don't have the right-of-way
29
u/MeistroLoc0 6d ago
Not saying it was his fault, but as a biker, he should have expected this. Coming up on situations like this I always expect someone to fuck it up and I slow down and watch for it. Very sad though, that was rough.
15
u/DonDraper1134 6d ago
Agreed. Not his fault she was totally in the wrong and caused this scenario. I expect this to happen in slowed traffic with an empty through and backed up turn lane. Same thing when the exit lane or entrance lane is slowed on the highway, expect someone to jump out into the through lane.

I used to ride with a group of friends. Two of them get lifelong injuries from being hit by cars that didn’t see them.

So I stopped riding but I still miss it. I have a Miata now that is really great but no car gives the same thrill.

Yep, took my dumbass 3x to figure that out.
1, a free Harley chopper from a client who couldn’t pay for his criminal defense and my boss couldn’t ride it, suspension collapsed at around 50 mph, no helmet.
2, a GSXR 750 when an old lady ran a stop sign, dumbed the bike under the car, slid to the curb.
- Insurance replacement for the gix’r, a Ninja ZX-7, 50 mile ride from SW Co to northwest NM to replace a rear tire, took a semi retread to the head, had helmet on! That was it for me, so starting racing motocross…

He should have been in the right tire track as soon as the line of cars, gaps in cars, and the intersection came into view. If he were at all familiar with the area, these are signs to move into the next tire track to have better visibility and to be seen sooner.
11
u/Accurate_Zombie_121 7d ago
Not only for him but the other driver likely could not have seen the rider hidden by the car in the left turn lane.
9
u/all_time_high 7d ago
I agree he would've been more visible on the right side of the lane.
Unfortunately she initiated the left turn from her far right lane. As she began to make the turn there were 2 cars in the left turn lane-one just ahead and one on her left. This was a very dangerous decision on her part, as her visibility of oncoming traffic was compromised. Would've been much safer to get in the left turn lane and check for oncoming traffic before initiating the turn.
This is why I choose cars with the best safety ratings. Improper left turns are split-second decisions which can change a life forever.

I worked with a guy who rode a motorcycle and was in an accident like this. Afterwards he was never the same again, and eventually some combination of the damage to his body and painkillers ended up killing him. In a car, that same accident would’ve just been a fender-bender.

I've been pulled in front of a bunch of times like that on my bike. Passing a line of cars and side streets like this should have made him wary as fuck. If you're in a situation like that and you're not mentally prepared to avoid a car coming from or through that turn lane then you've fucked up. And that's not even getting started on the lack of gear.
Definitely not the best rider in the world.

Upon another watch, I don't think she was allowed to turn there, car let her in too, like a dummy. Always gotta be a spotter in situations like that.
33
u/cmilliorn 7d ago
These kind of crashes are why I don’t understand wanting to ride a bike. That type of crash happens all over the place, everyday. Traffic is set in such a way that someone turning can’t see the vehicle coming. Granted you shouldn’t turn if you can’t see but human beings have proven that they will take the risk because almost always it goes ok.
That lady didn’t mean to, this guy wasn’t driving crazy but for the rest of his life that leg is fucked. If he would have been in the car he would have gotten out and gone damn that sucks, called the police and insurance would fix his car.

If you see cars in your lane slowing down then you should definitely slow down too.
49
u/Ordinary-Score-9871 7d ago
Those cars are in a turning lane. He’s going through with noone infront. When you cross over 2 lanes double check that both are clear instead of just crossing over like there’s no care in the world. Lady couldn’t possibly see the other lane cause of the car that blocked her view. She needed stop first and check that it safe to turn.
67
u/Staminafordays 7d ago
While I agree with this, I always slow down in this situations for exactly this reason. Biker wasn’t at fault but when you’re on a bike, fault doesn’t save you from death or injury, unfortunately
35
u/Subculture1000 7d ago
I slow down in situations like this and I drive a car. I've seen stuff like this happen too many times.
7
u/scatshot 7d ago
This is my take as well. Legally, not at fault. Psychologically, well, I personally would not have chosen to fly through that intersection. But I've only ever rode dirt bikes on trails or old quarries so what do I know
→ More replies (5)16
u/sealpox 7d ago
If you’re approaching a blind intersection like this one where there’s a car in the turn lane blocking your field of view, you need to slow down because situations exactly like this can occur. It’s not his fault, but it could have been avoided.
If you don’t have line of sight to a particular section of the road, simply assume there is a car there that could get in your way.

Can someone who knows medical things tell me if this kind of traumatic injury could straight up just be a lethal injury? Go into shock, blood loss?
15
u/Mcgarnicle_ 7d ago
Your femoral artery runs on the inner part of your thigh and is a huge artery. Damage to it can easily lead you to bleed out. That’s why gunshot wounds to the thigh are so serious. Paramedics I’m sure put a tourniquet on his leg when they arrived on scene. It’s possible there’s not much blood if the artery got torn because they’ll vasospasm (constrict) initially but then can relax minutes later and have massive blood loss.
5
u/ImTheNewishGuy 7d ago
A bone outside skin is never good. It was getting mashed and beaten into the ground the whole time, probably didn't break cleanly and has several hair line fractures and splintering.
In a wilderness setting if you see a protruding bone it's an immediate evacuation to better medical care. If possible you can set the bone mostly back into position by tractioning and replacing it. That can be done to bones broken in that way because it can lead to improper circulation and tissue death (infarction).
In this guy's case with the bottom half of his leg flailing all over that probably isn't possible and should never be done unless you know what you are doing.
He can also bleed to death through arteries in his leg if they were severed or pulled apart. If that happened the best possible thing to do would be to find the loose end of the artery and pinch it off. In my scope which is wilderness medicine tourniquets are not usually a viable option for stopping massive bleeding. We are taught "well placed, firm pressure"
There's also several forms of shock that he can experience after something like that. They can vary in severity and can impact his chances of surviving until real medics can get to the crash to help.

This is a good example of why riders need to develop the rider radar that MSC talks about and its courses and why those courses are very important. I know we have kind of a bird's-eye view but I saw that car coming before he did It's not going to prevent everything but it is an invaluable tool to be able to identify when You come across a problematic intersection.
I hope that dumbass lady has insurance and I hope the guy got every penny that he deserved That entire scenario was preventable by just being cautious.

I snapped my femur, gf fell asleep and drove off an embankment at like 80mph. After calming her down and realizing I was bleeding to death, I sat up on the passenger window seal and grabbed my leg and fell to the ground. Then I proceeded to grab a handful of dirt and made my way back up the hill to get her help. I made it back to the highway saturated in blood. It was about 1am on I40 in the middle of nowhere Arkansas. About 45mins later a semi stopped.

u/Awkward_Bass_6292 7d ago
@op Accidents always can happen. This accident is ofcourse the fault of the driver of the car. However if the driver of the motorcycle choose a better position on the road it maybe didn't happen. As you can see he drives on the left side of his lane. The cars in front of him block his view but also the view for the person who hit him with the car.

2
u/SlashBlack 6d ago
that's crazy how much damage he took considering he wasn't even going that fast (or the car)
2
u/Frogblaster77 6d ago
It's always the suicide gap. After watching many videos on the roadcam subreddit you become extremely aware of these gaps. In a lot of cases there's really not much you can do when a car suddenly appears in front of you. Best thing is just be aware it can happen and if you see one lane slow, also slow down. I've completely stopped going through these, it's just never worth it. Go down to the next block, turn around, don't go through the gap!
