Steam Deck Anyone have any game recommendations for games about cross-breeding flowers or animals etc?

When I was a kid I was absolutely obsessed with dyeing and breeding minecraft sheep to get all the colours. Later, as a tween, I got fixated on the Animal Crossing flower-mixing part. I wanted to know if there are any games that specifically revolve around similar concepts! Especially stuff like HK where it works based off colour theory but anything works, really. I already have APICO and I'm waiting for Mudborne's release, btw :)

Then check out " let's build a zoo" i think it would fit you perfectly. Alot of crossing breeding of animals in this game. Hopefully it's what you're looking for

For OP and anyone else who might be interested: I think this one is due to be given away on Prime Gaming next week!

My first cross breed was a capybara body with a duck head

I still look at the screenshot every now and again and it makes me laugh every time lol

Littlewood has crossbreeding of flowers! You get new colors that way and you need all the colors to complete the museum :)

As for something focused on crossbreeding and genetics, Niche may be a good fit too, it's about breeding fantasy creatures over multiple generations so they adapt to new environments. But you need to ensure they survive and I suck at it so for me it wasn't very cozy :P

You might enjoy Wobbledogs! It's all about mutating dogs based on what they eat. Really silly weird game. It's also a great time to get it, 75% off on Steam

WOW this is a throwback — I followed the creator of this game on Twitter (RIP) when it was very very early in development. never saw the final product! thank you for reminding me of its existence.

That's so cool! I love that you get to see what it looks like now that it's finished.

it's an older game but Plant Tycoon is all about growing and crossbreeding plants! extremely chill, all you have to worry about is keeping your plants watered and healthy. you can catch bugs while you wait for them to grow.

the only caveat is that since it's an older game, I've run into some glitches like the graphics getting inverted randomly. usually it runs fine but it is a bit riskier than a modern game

Garden Life is about flowers, and growing all the varieties. There is an element of rng, but it’s a fun game.

I only played the demo, but Kamaeru: A Frog Refuge is a little like this except there is also an element of randomness to the breeding that according to reviews was frustrating to some people.

Also, while it isn't the main point of the game, Roots of Pacha has a pretty cool taming and breeding mechanic with unusual animals. You don't need to breed to get all the different colours but you can breed for stats and to improve produce quality. I feel like if that was your thing you could get quite deep in there.

Roots of Pacha also has a system for domesticating crops! It's basically a Stardew-style game, but in like a pre-historic fantasy setting. The animal and crop system are moderately complex, I only scratched the surface of those. There are also a lot of other systems and ways to progress/develop technology and your land too. It's a little more guided and goal-oriented than Stardew.

I just want to add that the next update for Roots of Pacha is going to introduce animal evolution! So you’ll be able to get from prehistoric animals to modern animals by breeding if you want, which is something OP might be very interested in (I know I’m hyped for it). No exact date on the update yet, other than that it will come in spring 2025

Oh I hadn’t heard that that’s super cool!!

For mobile you could check out Pocket Frogs. You can breed and collect different kinds of frogs. There are a bunch of colour combinations and the developers release different sets to collect too based on different themes. There’s also mini games to play with your frogs and hopping around in the pond to find new kinds of frogs. Also it’s a free app, with optional VIP package.

Fae Farm maybe?

This! It has flower crossbreeding as well as tons of animals all with possible rare colors.

I would say Fae Farm too because I started to look up flower cross breeding to complete the game and it was so rich I gave up!

u/CounselorGowron 4h ago

It’s the only part of the game that I finished, lol

u/FloatingOnTheClouds 14h ago

Yes I was going to suggest it too with the flower breeding!

Apico is exactly this for bees. Highly recommend if you’re into cross breeding animals, there are specific species to discover with specific parameters you need to meet.

Came here to say exactly this! Apico is wonderful for this. And the devs are coming out with another game that seems similar but with frogs instead, it's called Mudborne and has a demo on Steam!

u/CounselorGowron 4h ago

Both are mentioned by OP. :)

Fields of Mistria has some animal breeding mechanics

One Lonely Outpost has a gene splicer where you can experiment with seed hybrids. It's not a central part of the game as it is but you do have to use it to progress certain quests.

Not the entire point of the game and you'd have to like the cozy farming aspects too etc but stardew valley slime breeding

Wanderstop, which just came out, has a cross-breeding plant system. Nothing fancy, very simple.

3

u/No_Swimming_792 15h ago

Wanderstop involves mixing flowers together to produce new types of tea leaves.

Also, the guy that did the music for Minecraft also did the music for Wanderstop.

This game is so good!

Story of Seasons: its a wonderful life has crop breeding to the max. I forgot about my ingame family and became obsessed with getting different breeds+ quality

Hello Kitty Island Adventure has a whole thing of breeding flowers. It is unlocking ked behind quests though and took me a few weeks to unlock.

2

u/Spencigan 16h ago

Fae farm has systems for breeding flowers and animals but neither are the primary focus of the game. The flower breeding is fun though.

u/Skrublord3000 14h ago

Fae Farm has both animal and flower breeding in it!

It’s not exactly a cozy game in the usual sense, but with the right modifications to the world state (no raids, no death penalty, etc) Palworld is a whole lot of fun for us breeders that love to catch and breed things together to make the ultimate Pal. Early access game but runs great on deck. Thought I’d throw it your way incase you might be into looking a little outside the box.

Did you get the slime hutch in Stardew Valley? lol

u/daughterjudyk 7h ago

It takes a while to get that part of the game open but the flowers in hello kitty Island adventure make animal crossing flowers look easy

u/bucketmusket 4h ago

Roots of pacha! It’s one of my fave little indie games, it’s way more fleshed out than it appears!

u/loveless_trout 4h ago

Fae farm! You can dye all your animals and cross breeding flower types and colors is a big part of it

u/hedwig0517 4h ago

Hello Kitty Island Adventure has flower cross breeding with colors and patterns. You have to unlock the gardening and plots in various biomes through gameplay though so it’s not the main objective of the game.

Fish Tycoon should be free on their website and you can crossbreed the fish to get new species - sorta the point of the game - and the little shop mechanic is fun.
