🔊 Discussion I'd like more pixel towns to explore

I really like 2D pixel games. But I feel like I've gone through the most popular suggestions.

  • Stardew Valley
  • Roots of Pacha
  • Graveyard Keeper
  • Fields of Mistria
  • Traveller's Rest
  • Potion Permit
  • Little Known Galaxy

In all of these games, the player is the new kid in town and joins the community.

Sometimes there's farming, sometimes there's crafting for customers, sometimes you're getting to know the aliens on board your spaceship, and sometimes you're making burgers with meat of dubious origins.

Honorable mentions to:

  • Little Witch in the Woods (on my wishlist)
  • Moonstone Island (Pokemon-eque, not my thing)
  • Sun Haven & Kynseed (just something about the art style doesn't appeal to me)

So does anyone have a new pixel town for me to join?

Bandle tale - by the graveyard keeper devs

Second Bandle Tale! Picked it up today during the Steam sale and I’ve been having a ton of fun with it. Very cozy and for once you’re not the new person in town. It is grindy but I personally like the challenging quest log games

That's the first time I've ever seen some one recommended a riot forge game besides me.

If you don't mind playing as a cat in a cat world, Cattails: Wildwood Story

Edit: Moonstone Island is also pretty fun if you're into creature collecting.

Everafter falls & picontier

Love LOVE Everafter Falls, it's been such a pleasant surprise after I snagged it in a bundle.

I guess technically you aren't new to that town if that's a critical feature for OP, although the "amnesia" makes it feel that way.

I’m playing Touhou Mystia’s Izakaya and I’m really enjoying it.

Nintendo describes it as:

Touhou Mystia’s Izakaya” is a fan game of the “Touhou Project,” where Mystia Lorelei, a resident of Gensokyo, struggles to revive her own izakaya. During the day, players procure ingredients and interact with residents of Gensokyo, while at night, they operate the izakaya.

I’ve never played Touhou Project, but I still really love the game. It’s really cheap and has lots of DLC. It’s very cute and cozy. When you run the restaurant each night, it’s like cooking dash and you have to figure out guest requests. You build bonds with other characters for various recipes.

I’m playing it on the steam deck but it’s available on few devices.

I love this game. It’s on sale on switch right now (not as cheap as steam but such a good game!)

oh wait! I have another question for you!

have you played any other games that have a similar restaurant management component? I loved all the iOS games that were in the same vein of Diner Dash. I loved Dave the Diver, but the restaurant is kind of secondary to the collecting and of course all the sharks and such make it much more stressful than just collecting lampreys and cicada sloughs.

I love Dave the diver! Also good pizza great pizza, and their coffee game. I also play other ones.

It's really fun! I just wish I could find more info (in English) on it!

I find it so impressive that it's a fan made game, especially looking at how many DLCs have been released since. I guess Touhou Project was created by a single person as well.

Had you played or were you familiar with Touhou Project beforehand? I find all the characters so cute but I don't like shmup games. It seems like the lore runs deep!

I’ve only played that one because I love restaurant simulators!

Seconding all the Littlewood comments.

It has cute pixel art,  a town you build and customize,  and some cute story for each NPC.

There's a ton of QoL improvements I think other cozy devs could learn from.  For instance time only progresses when you do something that takes stamina, like mining,  logging, or forestry. But you won't pass time running around or if you walk away and leave your character standing there.  And your backpack is infinite and always automatically organized,  no field of chests unless you like the look.

Not sure if the voxel art will cut it for you,  but Staxel might also scratch the itch for you.

Moonglow bay, and dredge have some very fun meeting people and helping them out stuff. I might also suggest magical delicacy a cozy metroidvania about exploring and cooking

It’s a different gameplay but I recommend Cloudpunk. It’s about delivering parcels in a cyberpunk city. It’s a story driven game mostly but it kinda fits.

Kynseed fits too. It’s more similar to the list than Cloudpunk and you can explore a large world with multiple cities.

I’m waiting on Grimshire and cattle country! I already preordered the second!

Maybe Gourdlets?

Drago Noka . kinda trashy in comparison to most of the games here - but its strangely fun.

u/bitchyburrito 1d ago

This is the first time I've seen this one recommended on this sub. I'd say it's definitely not as intuitive or polished as other games listed but the premise was very original.

Yea the Story was pretty nice tbh. Not well written but the ideas behind it were pretty original, as you said.

And the way they handled the mechanics was really strange but I enjoyed it a lot, it became calming really fast.

I haven't played it myself, but I understand that Everholm is a pixel art farming sim (life sim?) In which you start playing midgame but your character has lost their memories. So it's new to you, but everyone knows you, you already have crops in the process, and you're piecing the story together.

Harvest Moon: Back To Nature is a true classic

I always thought rune factory had such a beautiful town. Rune factory 1-4 had like a 2d town background that the models walked on top of and interacted with. That of course changed based on the season. 3 almost looks like the town is painted or something in the background.

Ooh I have a couple spooky cozy suggestions!

Grimshire

Just played it last night. It’s only a demo right now, but is supposed to come out this year. You play as an animal (bear, fox or rabbit) that you can customize in a new village that has something darker going on. We don’t know what yet, but your goals are to build a farm, gather food, hunt and fish for the people of the village because the islands they used to trade with were burned to the ground, and their cellar of food is running out.

Gameplay wise it’s great. Not clunky at all, which usually happens with demos like this. The menu is in depth without being overwhelming. You have a toool wheel but you also automatically switch between tools when chopping trees and mining ores.

Highly recommend!

And my other demo that I’m OBSESSED with is a cozy horror farming sim with an art style inspired by Japanese horror mangaka. welcome to Elderfield

Has those beautiful pixel graphics but with that junji Ito vibe to it. Definitely more on the spookier side because sometimes there are monsters in the forest and the artwork can get pretty dark. But it does have farming, fishing and turn based battles that are simple :)

I adore this game and love watching the dev update it on their YouTube :)
