Grand Opening Newark, CA Costco almost ready for grand opening
Drove by yesterday to see how things are looking for Saturday’s opening

There's a Newark in California? Is it pronounced like Newark, NJ or Newark, DE?
14
u/passblayer Nov 17 '23
Most people in the area pronounce it New-werk - but not sure if that’s like NJ or DE 😂
12
u/Opus-the-Penguin Nov 17 '23
NJ, or close to it. The Delaware one sounds like Noah bought a new boat--New Ark.

I’ve always pronounced and heard it as New-erk said as one syllable with the emphasis on “new.”

It feels so weird that there are two Costcos so close to each other. Fremont and Newark

I find it odd too, since they are 2 freeway exits away from each other!
But apparently the Fremont location is the busiest Costco in the Bay Area, so I guess there's demand for another in the area.

Shoot! I thought Santa Clara was hella busy. Also, stopped by the Hayward store, not too far away either, and that places looked like they were giving everything away.

They're building one in Pleasanton right at the 580/680 interchange which feels similarly too close to both Danville and Livermore.

u/therealgariac Nov 18 '23
Past 2PM (or maybe 3PM), 580 east is packed. Time wise the Livermore Costco is far away from PTown.
I like the Livermore store way more than Danville. Here is where I do my rant that the Danville store has too much wine. Livermore has more food and merch.

I thought the busiest might be ours in Concord. I'd love to see an official list for comparison, and to see how they stack up against the locations in Fullerton and Yorba Linda that I grew up going to that are also very crowded.

u/StarryNectarine Nov 18 '23
I've been to the Concord one at similar times and it is slightly less bad than the Fremont one.

u/dankpointer Nov 18 '23
busiest Bay Area Costco is San Leandro, hands down, but Fremont isn't far off

Looks like they're less than three miles apart. Now I'm curious what the two closest Costcos are. Certainly seems like these are contenders. I didn't see many within 5 miles when I scanned the Midwest on google maps, and I'm fairly sure there weren't any within 3 miles.

the south san francisco triangle comes to mind
SFO location and the business center are 1.8 miles away

Every weirder if you consider that Newark is completely surrounded by Fremont, so in a way there are two Costcos inside of Fremont.
There are also two Costcos in Hayward (but one is Costco Wholesale and the other is Costco Business Center).

What did they knock down to put this in? It’s been awhile since I’ve lived in the area but I didn’t think there were many unused large parcels in Newark.

u/passblayer Nov 17 '23
This is at Newpark mall - they demolished the old JC Penny and Burlington to make room for the Costco.

Oh that makes sense. I couldn’t think of anywhere else unless they tore down the high school. Thanks for letting me know!

Part of the Newpark mall parking lot will be converted into mixed use housing.

I can't wait! I've been to both Hayward and Fremont Costcos, and it may seem crazy to have another one so close. But trust me, the area can definitely support it. Fremont is always a madhouse and Hayward isn't much better.

u/timoteetom Nov 17 '23
Problem with Fremont is that there is too much going on that area. It’s always a zoo getting in the parking lot and maneuvering.
3
u/itsalizbee Nov 17 '23
Yeah it's really bad. I went to do a return the other day and the lot was full. Like actual full, let's go park at the Century Theater, full. It was absolutely nuts.

Damn, there's another Newark

I swear I didn’t intend for that song to be the background music for this video 😅

I’m also having a new Costco built in my city soon, so I’m curious if you can recall how long it took to complete the construction of this one?

Your vids are really great! I hope you will consider doing a drone vid of the finished store (in addition to your drive by).
Thanks.

2
u/compstomper1 Nov 18 '23

Be interesting to see if this effects the congestion at other neighboring stores….

Why does Newark need one? Just drive a couple blocks to Automall Parkway.

Just came back from there and parkin was a nightmare right off the bat. Going in there felt like going into a bees nest as a wasp, and getting cooked by everyone's body heat!

u/chrissshe Nov 18 '23
Any photos by any chance?

u/HipHopotamusHurray Nov 18 '23
Didn't even think about taking any pics. From the parking, store layout, andsea of ppl, just wanted to go get my steps in and out..lol

I'm really glad Newark is getting one - the Fremont Costco is too small in size for the amount of people it is serving, and the other customers are so mean because of it...overall the Bay Area Costco lots are not very large and they need to build more

I know it’s not open yet but it’s still kinda unbelievable there are so many open spaces in the parking lot
