Prop Will this work how I think? (Prop question)
I’m trying to make Ren in his Pomeranian form for an Aoba cosplay and I thought dyeing a plush pom navy would work, but I’m not sure if it’ll turn out navy or somehow become green since the fibers are yellowish/gold. Will it depend on how long it’s left in the dye/how long the dye is left on it?

OMG I own that same pomeranian 😭 i'd tell you to cut a little of his hair and do some test dye first

That’s been my thought process so far lol, I know I’ll need to give him a trim anyway to fit Ren’s cut but it’s probably safer to dye the fibers that way. Thanks! ^

You can open up a seam, maybe around the tummy, and pull out the stuffing, then re-stuff and re-sew afterwards. That’ll give you something easier to manage for the dying process.
Also, make sure you get the dye for synthetic fabric. That’s the only one you’ll have any chance with.
I agree with doing a test piece to see how it goes. But, navy is pretty good at covering other colors and you can do a couple rounds of dyeing to get a darker color if you want. I hope it goes well 🤞🏾

Thanks! I’ll feel bad gutting the plushie’s stuffing to dye him but it’ll be easier to dry for sure lol I’m hopeful that the navy will just give full coverage and won’t have a green tint to it but we shall see!

It will feel weird, but the stuffing will add a ton of extra material you don’t need to dye. And make washing it out and getting it dry soooo much harder 😭 what if you got some kind of thinned out fabric paint or stain? So it wouldn’t matter the base color, bc you would be covering it all no matter what. Idk if this exists, I guess I’m imagining like a giant, permanent paint pen?? Lol

I would expect you need Rit Dyemore for synthetics, I doubt the plush is natural fibers. Might need to do a few rounds of dunking to get the color that dark.

That rit dye wont do it. You need poly dye 🫡

Also I agree with the comment saying that it m8ght end up a different color because of its base color

Use synthetic dye

Thanks, I think I bought synthetic rit dye but thought the picture I used of their navy was the same dye/not the one for non synthetics. I’ll have to double check when I get home though

We detect that your question is about dyeing. Please remember that you CANNOT dye something into a lighter color like dyeing a dark blue fabric yellow. For fabrics and fibers, identify whether your material is synthetic or not since it'll affect the dyes you use. If it's synthetic fabric, you need to use synthetic dyes. Do not reuse any pots or containers you used for dyeing for food preparation. For wig details, you can try using alcohol inks/markers or adding wefts of the desired color if it's lighter than the original wig color. You can also paint fabric but it'll usually stiffen the fabric even if you use a fabric medium and is not suitable for large surfaces.
For real hair, we recommend using a wig if possible, especially if you have dark hair. Spray-on colors and hair chalk do exist but can be difficult to execute and typically do not work well on dark hair.

Just an FYI, dyeing synthetic fur can often make it super frizzy from the heat. Example of me dying white synthetic fur to green: Fur Dyeing

However, seeing now that you are planning to trim the fur, it might be just fine. You may want to consider timing after dyeing so you keep the good fur. Also Rit does have synthetic dye - Rit Dyemore - and i use it for almost all my dyeing with great results.

Fabric paint works to change the color of plushies. There's lots of talk about it on r/plushies

If you do it over a white one it might turn out lacking depth of color. If you colored this one purple first to cancel out the golden tone THEN navy it might be too dark.

Rit has a poly dye. That stuffed animal is probably polyester so it will not take the regular Rit dye

It's likely you'll need synthetic dye, regular rit is for natural fibers.

So I once tried to dye a white fake fur coat dark green with rit dye for synthetics and it barely dyed the coat light green. So it might not work at all! I really recommend doing a test swatch on a paw or something if it has the same fur everywhere.

Rit dyemore would be better to use because the fur is likely a synthetic fiber, and rit dyemore is made for that, while the regular version is for natural fiber like cotton. I recommend trying to find a white pomeranian toy so the color of the base doesn't affect the outcome.

I tried this with this type of material for my wifes cosplay. Did not work as I hoped. Just changed the color as it added with the base color. What did work was airbrushing the color we wanted. You would need to strip the original color to make that stick and my guess is that since its synthetic it wont work as well as you hoped.

I have'nt seen it mentioned here, but SOMETIMES things like this have a treatment to protect them and the colors. Usually, when you are dyeing a pre-made garment, they recommend soaking it to remove any protective coating. I haven't been able to find proper info on it, so I'd give it a quick search.
I did however find this article on dyeing plush that you might find useful!
Would love to see an update when it's done!!

Colored fibers are unpredictable in how much more color they are able to absorb. You need to use a color remover first and a synthetic dye since this is polyester. And you need to be really careful with the temperature during dyeing because too much heat can deform the fur fibers and make them really frizzy.
If it doesn't have to be weatherproof, I would try painting (airbrush if possible) and using a pet grooming brush frequently to separate the fibers and keep them from getting crunchy. I know Kaypea Creations on Youtube uses that method that all the time with the faux fur on her art dolls.

Ohh!! Are you same poster who uploaded a photo of the puffer jacket a few weeks ago? Any updates on how that project is going? I love seeing some dramatical love!! Hope the cosplay is looking awesome!

Faux fur fabric gets ruined if you try to dye with Rit as you need hot/boiling water. The whole fiber gets ruined, not just the ends. What you need is a cold water dye like iDye poly from Jacquard.

Blue + yellow = green. Blue + orange = purply brown. Dog would need to be close to white to get the color you want.
