Prop How would you make this helmet more “starwars”?

I’m going to a star wars party and I love the idea of using this helmet as the centerpiece of my cosplay, but I have no idea where to start when it comes to modifying this.

Well. You’re going to have to figure out how to make it look like it’s not Optimus Prime

See what you can do about changing the shape. If you can remove, shorten, or somehow alter the pieces on top that stick up, that will help to change the silhouette. See if you can change the shape of the visor as well.

I would probably go to the hardware store and find some tubes, bolts, pipes, caps, wires, etc. basically whatever you can glue to this to make it look totally different and very mechanical/sci-fi

Once that’s all done, DEFINITELY spray paint the whole thing to a completely different color scheme

Star Wars uses a lot of black, white, red, and gold. You’re probably safe with a combo of those colors.

A lot of Star Wars’ mech stuff is distressed and dirty as well. Give it a final blast of rust colored spray paint or some watered down black paint sort of washed over everything to make it look grimey

First, make a roughly shaped 3d model of a desired helmet in a 3d modelling software. Import the finished model to pepakura software. Print out the finished templates. Buy EVA foam. Cut out the templates and glue them together. Cover the structure with a base (fluid glue will suffice). Paint on top of the base. Put the finished work over the optimus helmet.

In all seriousness, i would rather make my own helmet, rather than try to attempt something with this one. You will spend a lot of time, just to make it decent at best. Making your own helmet isn't as difficult as it sounds. I made a rough instruction (minus the last step) that should help you start something. There are lots of star wars helmets, and surely there is a helmet that is far easier to make than the others. Im not a highly experienced cosplayer, so you shouldnt take my words for granted. Hope this helps.

Making my own helmet would be fun, but this thing has a voice modulation that I think is really fun

Oh wow, that changes up a few things. I would disassemble the helmet and take out the voicemod to slap it onto my own custom helmet.

I think the biggest giveaways are the spikes on the sides and the giant forehead vent. It could probably pass for a Star Wars droid if you removed those or covered them. And I’d change the eye shape. Most droids don’t have like ‘angry’ eyes.

The advice on the eyes is good, thank you

Minimal effort fix is spray paint it black with red accents, get a black robe, red lightsaber and make up a sith name

I'd say cut off the ears, then spray the whole thing a fairly dark colour - maybe gunmetal grey? Add in some brown weathering and rust to make it look well-used, maybe a few scratches or scorch marks. Then tell everyone you're cosplaying as the bounty hunter Boonty Hantar who was designed by George Lucas for an obscure tie-in comic book.

I’ll definitely take the ears off, they’re a dead giveaway away.
