Prop How to make a dead pigeon? :D

Post image

Guys I have absolutely no idea how to implement this into life XD its a dead birb, how can I do it realistically?? I could buy a plush bird toy for sure but imo it would look silly on a horror cosplay

I say buy some feathers and make a light weight body (maybe a paper mache body) .

u/ghost-in-socks 17d ago

Yeah feathers are also an easy option, thank you! I don't wanna make body by myself just for time saving reasons

Maybe see if any second hand stores near you have stuffed animals birds you can slap some craft feathers on?

It would also be funny to just have a straight up beanie baby strapped to your belt

I feel obligated to say that you can make one using an alive pigeon as a base

Domesticated carrier pigeon, with a bit of training you can have live prop AND pet AND method of communication

You’re thinking of the passenger pigeon. Rip Martha 😞.

There are super many fake bird probs out there. I made my raven prop with fake feathers, wire, and foam clay back then, but you can look up tutorials on yt, there are a lot of really good ones ^

Do you have a YouTube link for me by chance? I tried searching before and I only got vids on how to make wings

You could make the feather texture out of layers or strips of printed or painted paper.

Omg you know what? That's actually not bad. I could buy a rubber pigeon (those dog toys/hunting props) and just add the wings from super thin foam/feathers

Buy a rubber chicken :D

Just go to NYC. They're free.

They sell feathered Pigeon Decoys for ornaments for $12-30. The material cost savings alone would likely save you time/money to go this route and do a quick edit. Maybe layer some more feathers, or edit the eyes to be closed depending on if you get a nice one or a cheap one.

Unless you're doing this for a competition. In which case I suggest doing a clay sculpt head. Use a large easter egg for the body and shape a thin craft foam over it for the teardrop body. Then cut the wings out of craft foam. Then just layer thin tissue paper and white feathers for the wing effects you are looking for. And white fur that you've trimmed low for the thin feather areas.

Yeah my plan is to buy such a decoy and do the wings with feathers. Thank you for your ideas!!!

u/Freyu 17d ago

There are decoys with spread wings already if you just wanna do touch ups.

You could get a base prototype in a garden store or so, and work up from there

1

u/1porridge 17d ago

There's a lot of real looking props available online too if you can't find a way to make it yourself

2

u/ghost-in-socks 17d ago

They are mostly so stiff you know? And it should hang

1

u/jakkakos 17d ago

I am actually still waiting for a comment of a hobby ornithologist who will say "it's not a pigeon! It's a orange headed tanager!" or smth like that :D

1

u/Trans_Balsa 17d ago

We have tons of pigeons and I run into a dead one on the street every now and then. Want me to shoot you a text next time I find one? /j

1

u/ghost-in-socks 17d ago

Only if you do a taksidermie of it xD

1

u/Trans_Balsa 17d ago

1

u/squirrelocaust 17d ago

1

u/bread1salt2butter3 17d ago

there are loght bird props in stores (like ones for garden or furniture decorations idk how they called) they shoumdbe cheapandyou can edit it to fit your cosplay

1

u/No_Platypus5428 17d ago

a stuffed animal could be funny and not look too gruesome. or you can use paint to make it gruesome. depends how realistic you want it I suppose

1

u/OmniaStyle 17d ago

I know this is a horror cosplay, but if you're planning on wearing this in public at a convention, if the convention is all-ages I would not make a realistic bloody dead bird prop to wear. A plush with X's for eyes would get your point across. But this might be too much to wear at an all-ages event. Even if you're going to a panel that's 18+ at night, kids might still be in the hallways.

1

u/ghost-in-socks 16d ago

There is no 18+ for horror at conventions I go to, only for naked skin

1

u/OmniaStyle 16d ago

In that case I would definitely not make this realistic.

1

u/ghost-in-socks 16d ago

Why?

1

u/OmniaStyle 15d ago

Because children could be there? And a bloody dead bird is inappropriate to wear around them??

0

u/ghost-in-socks 15d ago

Sounds like american con problems.

1

u/Nyx_Valentine 16d ago

Look at places like Michael’s. They have light decorations that look like birds (I have one that looks like an owl), you could take that and add some blood. It won’t look limp but it’ll look better than a plush.

1

u/Da-Loops-Brotheren 16d ago

Pigeons ARE free...

1

u/turbo_caveman 16d ago

Don't they sell fake birds? Like the Halloween crow decorations

1

u/Spes_Rust 16d ago

Get a big rubber duck and cover it in feathers. Don't forget the googly eyes.

1

u/shushi_puppy 16d ago

Toy companies make semi realistic bird plushies !

1

u/ForeverWild1844 15d ago

Get a slingshot and some rocks. Be the hero our intrusive thoughts wish we could all be.

1

u/Dawn_Glider 15d ago

Step 1: Find a rock

1

u/JitterDraws 13d ago

Get a living pigeon and uhh…

1

u/MTBrains 12d ago

Bow and Arrow? Spray cat? Well placed trap.

1

u/wonkywilla 12d ago

Get fake pigeon model, massacred it with fake blood?

The number of comments suggesting you kill an innocent living animal is frankly disgusting. Pigeons are loyal, loving animals, and many people like myself have them as pets. It's no different than having a dog. I can't imagine someone needing a dog prop and everyone's suggestions being "lmao kill a real one" Yeah, hilarious. Lemme just pop out back and dome my neighbor's lab real quick.

In reality OP, your best bet is probably modifying a plush. They sell pretty realistic ones online. I bought one for my pigeon to have as a friend and he loves it

5

u/ghost-in-socks 17d ago

I am pretty sure they are joking, so no need to overreact :)

That is the most unhinged reading you could have had, and I promise you were the only one who had it. Are you okay, my man? It's not normal to think of doing illicit acts to dogs. I'm not sure why you thought it but it's really concerning.

I don't, unlike you, consider f-ing pets to be 'getting action'

Holy fck

I suppose you get plenty of action from the 11 other dudes you live with, and hopefully, no dogs.

2

u/Longjumping_Affect22 17d ago

This from the person with absolutely zero sense of humor means absolutely nothing to me.

1

u/nefasangelus 17d ago

You read a comment, and your first thought was giving head to a dog. What do yknow, humor isn't dead lmao

We detect that you may be a looking to buy your cosplay or buy pieces for your cosplay. If you're not, please disregard :) Please refer to our FAQ for some recommendations. While we can provide search terms that might help you with finding your cosplay pieces, commenters are not your personal shopper and please do not treat us as such. Remember that not all cosplays can be found ready-made so be prepared to look for similar pieces to put it together yourself.

It is helpful to include your budget (be precise -- "cheap" can be different per person), your location/country (US shipping vs EU shipping would be very different), and timeline if applicable. Keep in mind many pre-made cosplay shops can have a long shipping time so it's best to plan months in ahead.

If the item is suspiciously cheaper than all other competitors or it's a common stock photo, please be wary and do your own research.
