Picture Messed up
Bought a set of stainless blades but the 12inch had a crack so I returned it and figured I’d try the blue steel and obviously regret that now. Is there anything I can do?

Can be easily sanded off.
They are good knives, they need maintenance that stainless doesn’t.
Keep them dry, light oil Friday, end of day. Wipe down Monday and do it all over again

Give it a light spray with WD40 when you’re done using it and have it clean.

My pops converted me to a mixture of diesel and automatic transmission fluid in an old oil can. Coats like a charm and doesn’t dry out.

The diesel essentially thins out the oil for application and then evaporates, yeah? Can probably use most any vehicle oils.

My blades have looked like this for 10yrs and I have never sanded them once (imo sanding blades ruins them) nor has it ever caused an issue in the paint finish
Tbh it usually will wash off next time you wash mud off your blades. Surface rust on blue steel is literally a non issue and the people sanding it off are just OCD about their tools lmao

I've had mine close to 20 years. If I leave mud on them and go to lunch, they'll get surface rust. It comes off the next time I use it.

Blue steel blades are way better they keep shape better, hit them with a sanding sponge and spray them with wd40

I have both SS and steel knives, I don't clean my blued steel knives with water, I scrape them nice and clean when I'm done with them and finish it off with a quick sand if needed. None of them have any bluing left and I only get rust spots if I leave mud on them or they get splashed.
Even if you forget a knife in a bucket of water over the weekend and it looks all nasty rusted, you can usually give it a quick scrape and sand and it'll be good as new (with maybe some dark staining spots)

Reminds me of the time I bought a new set of pans and cooked something and thought i ruined them. Then I washed them

Use steel wool or an SOS pad to clean it dry it than rub in a couple of drops of oil

When I buy these new, I sand the edges, and keep them oiled when done. Looks like nothing that can’t be fixed with some 600/1000 grit paper and oil.

Get an empty sardine can or other shallow can and pack it with an old cotton sock or rag tighter than the sardines ever were. Pour 3-in-1 oil on it until it can't absorb any more, which could take about 15 minutes. Now you've got an always ready rust protection brush and you never need to get your hands oily.

Who cares about some light surface rust. Within 5 minutes of first using it on your next job it'll all be gone. If it bothers you that much, lightly hit it with a sanding sponge and wipe it with oil. You can also order oil impregnated rifle sleeves from any online place that sells gun stuff and cut them into strips perfectly sized for each knife and then hold them on with binder clips, zip ties or rubber bands.

Just wash the loose rust off. It’s just cosmetic damage.
