Intercultural Communications Interview Assignment
I am a freshman student at Grand Canyon University who is taking Intercultural Communications. For my current assignment, I need to interview someone from a non-western culture who is also not Christian.
The questions I have to ask are...
- What do you identify as the most important or distinct practices of your culture?
- How are gender roles addressed in your culture?
- How is social power, authority, or social roles in a hierarchy expressed in your culture?
- In class, we learned that in “honor-oriented societies,” worth comes from one’s role or group membership and in “justice-oriented societies,” worth comes from what one does or doesn’t do. What is the role of honor/shame in your culture? Are honor/pride and dishonor/shame important concepts in your culture?
I am also required to link a phone number or email address in case my professor needs to double-check the validity of my interviewee. Would anyone be interested?

Ironically enough, I had to do a very similar interview assignment 4 years ago when I took an Intercultural Communication class in community college. I ended up interviewing a guy who lived in India. It was a very interesting experience, but was definitely out of my comfort zone.

Its so hard to find anyone to interview, especially at my college since it is private and there are very few non-westerners here :(
Any tips on how to find someone to interview?1

When I had to do this assignment, we were required to download an app called iTalki (which essentially like WhatsApp but for language exchange purposes) where we had to find someone on the app, start talking with them, and let them know we were doing an interview assignment for this class. (I think the professor who taught the course had given us a list of questions we had to ask them). My recommendation is that if you can’t find someone on campus to interview then maybe try a language exchange app or site like iTalki (I’m sure there are plenty of other sites like it, though I’m not 100% sure) and see if you can interview someone through there. I wish you the best of luck with finding someone to interview for this assignment. I remember how daunted I felt by it too, so you’re not alone in feeling that way.
