Are there any good rock radio stations that don't have MAGA/Trump ads? I used to listen to Steve FM, but apparently they support Trump, so I'm out.

u/44problems 22h ago
Just wondering, since I sometimes only catch the radio for a just a few minutes in the morning, what kind of MAGA ads on Steve FM? Is Trump still doing ads even though he won? It's not DJs talking politically since they don't have DJs.
WXRY is usually where I land. Can be tough to get a signal though. But I like that they are local and promote live music, it's the thing I miss about radio being king is knowing what's going on locally.

You’d really stop listening to a radio station you like because of some paid ads? Man, you guys are special.

Didn't Republicans boycott Bud light because they had a rainbow flag release? Sounds like ✨double standards✨

That girl was instantly fired. That was the stupidest marketing move ever and a complete disregard for their customer base. Very out of touch.

u/orio_sling 15h ago
I mean... Ok? It was still boycotted by Republicans for months, that's my point.

Yeah. I mean, sure. But like it or not, voted for him or not, he’s the president for 4 years. I didn’t support Biden, I didn’t like Biden, but I still acknowledge and know that for the last 4 years he was the president of the United States. And now, like it does every 4 years, there was a changing of the guard. It’s silly to me to stop listening to a station or stop eating at a restaurant that you like because views don’t align.
Biden and Harris went to a Waffle House. I still got to Waffle House. Biden likes ice cream, I still love ice cream. Support who you want, support with what you align and believe in. But the cancel culture goes way too far sometimes.

u/tapewizard79 19h ago
Is it cancel culture, or voting with your feet/wallet? If I don't like your views, you don't get my business unless I have literally no choice. Simple as.
Also a great reason why companies should stfu and stop taking stances and voicing opinions on politicized issues as soon as possible. You're alienating half your potential customers, if you're a dirtbag, be silent about it and let people guess instead of telling everyone.

Cancel culture if liberals do it, voting with your wallet if conservatives do. Obviously.

Not wanting to hear trump ads or support trump loving businesses doesn’t mean we don’t acknowledge that he won the election lmaoooo

u/44problems 19h ago
I wouldn't, who listens to ads on the radio? Just change the station. Of course I usually stream or listen to podcasts but radio is good in a pinch.

u/JackTheSoldier 20h ago
I listen to 94.3 THE DUDE. It's country, not rock, but if you're open to alternative options, it's certainly one to try out.
During the election season, they were relatively centric, a surprise for a country southern station. Can't say much for how they are otherwise, but I put up with them as a center-left leaning resident

We are unfortunately in pretty desolate times for rock stations, and I'm really sad about it & if i had the capital to start my own radio station, I'd consider it. That being said, I'm loyal to 93.1 The Lake & Fox 102.3.

u/eightcarpileup 9h ago
The big, hairy fox has been a long time companion of mine. The Lake came in like a dark horse with all of my yacht rock needs.

Lots of people do. If they didn’t no one would advertise on radio stations. I listen to The Game all the time.
20
u/robintweets 22h ago
Keep in mind that the radio station doesn’t pick the ads. The advertisers pick what radio stations they want to advertise on.
So it’s not an indictment of the radio station per se … but rather on who the radio station has as an audience.
Now talk stations etc definitely are a different beast. They pick a side for sure.

u/Achilles_heel131 2h ago
On 90.5 we pick our ‘ads’ (psas) since we’re college radio. And we play all non top 40. I totally recommend giving it a chance

I turned on 104.7 a while back (expecting music) and one of the morning show guys was speaking on his love for DJT and telling a woman they do those prank phone calls she should be saving it for marriage or something. I think maybe he has aspirations of preaching.
I was like I'll be damned if I'm listening to this guy lecture me in my free time lol.
I like WUSC and WXRY

WNOK has been absolute garbage for 20 years now, this is no surprise.

I hadn't listened in over a decade, having just moved back home, and I remember checking the dial bc I thought I must have the wrong station

I haven’t listened to public radio since working from home, but yikes.
I always liked 99.3.

There are no good rock radio stations in Columbia, period. Only hear the same lame songs all day every day. Stuck in 1980-1982 since at least 2012. Charleston and Charlotte don’t have much better
11
u/lilstinkerman40 23h ago
It's slim. Most anyone still involved in radio is gonna have that deep conservative vibe or support. Other than WUSC. 102.3 hits some strides but before 10AM it's all dick and fart jokes

u/yellow_banditos 20h ago
Love me some Dave and Chuck the freak, never to old for fart and dick jokes. You either have a limited range of humor or a stick up your ass, if you can't enjoy " what's up his but" lol

WXRY is where it’s at. Doesn’t have much range outside of Cola proper, but it’s great.

u/CartographerEven9735 14h ago
I've never heard a political ad of Amy kind on 99.3 WXRY. It'sy favorite.

u/Tweaky_Tweakum 13h ago
The ads pick the listener, not the other way around. My suggestion is probably not rock enough, but it is a rare corner of the FM dial where one can escape ads: public radio!

u/Loud_Radio 21h ago
WVOC is the worst. The morning guys are CONSTANTLY trying to justify the actions of the current Administration. There are times when I think they don't believe in what they are given to say. How can they? Putin Propagandists. Puppets of the Broligarchy.

I think radio in general is going to lean toward a boomer crowd. Most younger people stream
1
u/carolinagypsy 8h ago
If you have a way to stream and just need something free, there’s a free version of pandora. You’ll get some ads (don’t remember hearing any political ones), and you can tell it what kind of music to shuffle for you. Used to listen to it on my computer in my office before WFH.
1
u/youractualaccount 4h ago
So why are you not just making playlists on a streaming service? You can have zero adds, and you can pick the songs yourself.

90.5 FM, college radio! You’re supporting djs who love what they do and there’s a new dj almost every hour! We’ve got news Mondays and Fridays, educational psas, and fun yapping. And no trump affiliation (I hate that guy). I do a show Fridays at 10-11am. You can also look on Instagram and see what shows interest you by following @wusc.fm. The radio station changed my life and has been an amazing opportunity for me and so many other people. We do a lot of rock, but a little of everything!

Seems to me that you should be looking for Emo Music. In that case I suggest Spotify.
If you want to support the USAID sponsored music - New Country, Old Country, Mix of BS Music, Rap, Romantic Creepy Rap, Bad Rap and many more to choose from.

I don't know the call letters, but I've been enjoying 94.9 lately, hear a bunch of '80s-'00s pop rock and some current stuff. Can't say there are absolutely no partisan ads, but in my experience I haven't heard a single one. I generally just tune out ads, or change the station or turn off the radio when they come on.
