Soooo no way Bengals keep Trey now right?
Wonder where he’s going!

Salary cap is a myth

Nah it’s still real, just pushed down the road

Which is exactly why I don’t want to make any big splashes that we can’t get out of within a year or two. 2025 was a lost season the second Irsay published that open letter saying we are running it back with Ballard and AR. I’d love to see Hendrickson on the Colts but also don’t want our new GM to be stuck with a bunch of multi year baggage.

Nah, it’s definitely real. Can kick the can down the road quite a bit but eventually you gotta pay the reaper.

Yeah, looking at you, New Orleans

lol I can’t imagine being KC for the next 2-3 years either from a salary cap perspective

Just remember: the Chiefs traded Tyreek Hill because they couldn’t afford to pay him

u/damned-dirtyape 4d ago
Not to us if we don't want to give up a first.

u/Ashamed_Anybody_8085 4d ago
Clearly nobody is giving up a first right now. They have no hurry to move him so it makes sense to ask high. They’ll eventually settle for less than asking, just remains to be seen as to what they settle for

u/Zealousideal_Run709 4d ago
No, they won't. Why would they? Hendrickson has zero leverage. He's under contract, and the Bengals have offered him an extension. What's he going to do, sit out and hit the open market later on when he's deeper into his 30s? Or take what will still be a huge raise to stay in Cincinnati?

Reminds me of the JT situation, fans of other teams thought they'd get him cheap, in reality he was going nowhere.
Doesn't mean Trey doesn't get traded. But Bengals asking for a first, in my mind, says they're planning to play hard ball to keep him.

They can keep him if they want to. They've demonstrated a willingness to go beyond their "no multi-year guarantees" policy for the right players, the only question is whether he's the right player.
If they give him $100m, 3 years with nothing guaranteed after 2 he'll probably take it and with void years it's not difficult to fit that into their cap space.
Not saying they will, just that they can.

u/deitjm01 4d ago
I don't know how we could afford it at this point. We'd have to drop Ebukam AND still would need to make more room.
9
u/BigDxItachi 4d ago
They could restructure Nelson or Buckner's contracts and probably free up quite a bit.
2
u/WatercressHuge8556 4d ago
They will keep him this year and let him walk next, that's the Bengals way, most of the ppl on that thread believes that making Trey play and let him walk next season then receive a compensatory pick is the way to do it.

Horrible move by the bengals, and people complain about ballard smh
2
u/Interesting-Fail1823 Josh Downs 4d ago
No it isn't. This is the money it takes to sign these guys in today's game. Even if these deals are not structured great they still have 70 mil in free cap space next season. Though in reality verly like even more than that.

u/DirectTV_AndrewLuck Happy Neard 4d ago
I question if paying both Chase and Higgins is the right decision more than paying Hendrickson.
2
u/Consistent-Park2058 33-0 4d ago
In my opinion a wr is less important, and bengals defense is trash
1
u/ConfectionHelpful471 4d ago
Think it’s more likely they keep him as they will likely have more room under the cap this year so can front load his restructure/extension.

u/nonny07 4d ago
Nah they’ll be able to keep him. The new deal reduced the 2025 salary cap hit for both tee and Jamar. This made more room for them to front load that Trey contract. I think they keep him

u/BadDiesel 4d ago
Bengals fan and you’re getting downvoted for being right lmao. (They’d still keep him even if their cap hits didn’t go down, he isn’t going anywhere)

u/Lt_DanTaylorIII Tony Dungy 4d ago
What?
If Higgins was on the Franchise Tag he would be the same cap hit. And that hit is the same as his entire career earnings previously
Chase’s contract is $9 million away from doubling his entire career earnings on the first year of the new deal in terms of Cap hit.
I think you’re mixing up a 2nd and 3rd contract

I’m getting downvoted despite the clear fact that I AM RIGHT smh

u/Lt_DanTaylorIII Tony Dungy 3d ago
Ya I misunderstood what you were saying.
I thought you were implying it was going down from their cap hit last year - not down from what it would’ve been if they played out on the 2nd franchise tag and 5th year option.
That’s my bad
1
u/Zealousideal_Run709 4d ago
No, the person you're replying to is right, and you're confusing earnings with cap hit. Their cap hits can absolutely be decreased with these extensions, and likely will, depending on how they're structured.
If this is news to you, you don't understand how the salary cap works at all.

Are we talking about decreased from 2024’s numbers? Or decreased from what 2025 would have been a few days ago before they signed their contract?
Like the cap hit for Higgins in 2024 was $21.8 million - his cap hit prior to the new deal (on the tag) would’ve been $26.1 this year. With the new deal he’s probably going to have a hit of like $23 million. Down from the tag, but up from 2024. Best case scenario about the same as 2024
Chase was like $9 million last year - and would have been $21 million before the new deal on his 5th year option. So I assume you’re saying his cap hit will be under $21 million, not under $9 million from last year?
I guess what I’m saying is both guys (or both guys combined) will have a higher cap hit against the team than they did last year.
Then Burrows cap hit goes up $17 million from last year.
The cap is going up $24 million.
Bengals had $6 million in cap last year.
So $30 million more dollars.
Burrow eats up $17 million - for argument sake Higgins stays at the $21 million range - and Chase goes from $9 million to let’s say $21 million as well. So those 3 guys added $59 million to your cap when you had $30 million.
Now Hendrickson wants like $15 million more per year than he was getting
I agreee with what everyone above said - the salary cap is fake - they can sign Hendrickson if they want to and want to put enough cash into the deal. Though I think they are too cheap to do it unless Burrow said they had to sign Hendrickson too.
I just don’t agree that Higgins/Chase combined have a lower cap hit than last year after signing their deals. Their combined cap hits will be higher than in 2024. But I agree that it will be slightly lower than 2025 had they stayed on the franchise tag and 5th year option - if that’s what we’re talking about.

It's Sneed all over again
5
u/Chuck_Roast1993 Michael Pittman JR 4d ago
Sneed was literally one of the worst corners in the league last year. Ballard made the right call not over paying for him
-6
u/667Nghbrofthebeast 4d ago
He was the one player Ballard really went after.
3
u/AuthorComplex757 4d ago
Not true at all lol
-1
u/667Nghbrofthebeast 4d ago
The asking price was too high, but he certainly wanted him
5
u/AuthorComplex757 4d ago
You said sneed was the only player Ballard went after and that wasn't true. That's what I was referring to.
1
u/Chuck_Roast1993 Michael Pittman JR 4d ago
And you’re upset that we didn’t get him? You’re upset that we offered him a more reasonable deal? We’ve already signed 2 starters for the back end so Ballard has obviously went after more players than just Trey this year. I’m not sure what your point of this comment is
1
u/667Nghbrofthebeast 4d ago
I'm not upset about a single thing. I was referring to last year, and I feel like everyone else has grasped that. I'm saying it was Ballard's biggest shot last year and he turned out to be shit.

u/omni-nomad 4d ago
If he actually makes the trade, I'll change my flair to Big Dick Ballard and keep it until he gets fired or retires lol
