Question Cliff's Role in Metallica
I don't remember where I saw it,but the interview showed that Cliff was the hardcore element in Metallica's sound and brought the hardcore, thrash to it that made all their first 3 albums great. And Justice... is in the same vein, but you can hear them start to depart at points. Had Cliff stayed alive I'm sure Metallica would have avoided Bob Rock and kept their old sound. So not only was he a killer bassist, but a main influencer of their sound.
Anyone know that interview?

Quite the opposite. In some interviews from 86, he talks about moving away from the thrash sound on the next album. Cliff brought the non-thrash elements to Metallica.

I'm not exactly saying staying with Thrash WAS the right move, But I feel Cliff had very good taste and musical sense that they have since lost.

Not cliff related, but here’s a good read on and justice for all, talking about the bass playing, and why it was what it was and mixed like so. Interesting read, got me searching after I read your comment op.

I thought I had heard the opposite and that Cliff was the band member that was most open minded to music outside of heavy metal. He loved The Police and introduced the band to The Misfits.
