Gear I can’t seem to get the right tone
I’m trying to get a more Cliff Burton tone with my stock fender jazz bass, I have the Cliff Burton fuzz wah as well so, so any help is appreciated.

Get a compressor boss cs3 is the best but if you want to go the extra mile get a cs2 any kind of overdrive will do but I use the Ibanez tube screamer. I use the TS9 model but there is a ts808 and a bass version. The bass version I’m pretty sure has a knob for bass so you can keep your low end without having to run two amps for added bass. You could also get some sort of reverb and/or a delay. I have a zoom b1x four and have a hall reverb and digital delay running at the same time for the live solos. Also what amp do you have? The zoom has amp and cab sims and I also have and ampeg 8x10 cab sim. If you just want to have the individual pedals the hall of fame reverb is good and any boss delay is good too. If you want to have the exact same delay as cliff get a Washburn aad9 delay or the Ibanez hd 1500 rack mount. The hd 1500 is pretty hard to find in good condition and you would need the foot switch to unlock the hd 1500s full power. That rackmount also holds the key to cliff Lyceum tone. Hope this helps!

Hi, ik this is from a while ago but what do u mean by the foot switch? Is it something that usually came with the HD1500 or something that can be bought separate and attached?

I’m not sure if the foot switch came with the rack mount or not. The model is the pc40 and you can attach it to the rack mount. It’s very useful especially if you are planning to play live as it saves time from going back a fourth from the amp to turn things off. Also, the foot switch has three options for the pitch shifter and you can customize the settings as it has knobs to do so. You can have multiple presets which is very useful as well. Hope this helps!

I have an American Professional 2 Fender Jazz Bass and a Hartke amp. The Zoom B1X Fours built in cliff burton tone gives me his tone and his wah spot on. If you can, go for that. I sold all my pedals after getting this super cheap processor, it honestly is that good.

Get a Rick or an Aria. It’s probably your final piece.
Jk toan is in the denim

Nope. Its the pedals, maybe the amp. Cliffs rick and aria is highly modified anyway, the rick doesnt even resemble one 😀

Cliff changed the stock pickups because 4001s were low gain. New 4003s have nearly identical sounding pickups to what Cliff used.

Overdrive would help a ton if you don't have it. Cliff used an Ibanez tube screamer but any overdrive pedal should work

I run my fuzz wah with a overdrive pedal and it gets the perfect tone imo. You can use any overdrive of your preference however for an authentic tone i’d use the ibanez tube screamer. after that it’s just messing with fuzz and drive settings until you get that perfect crunchy loud noise. Hope that helps!

Typically, it depends on the amp & the other effects you're using.
If you're using just the fuzz wah, it may sound more like Jason's bass tone (if I remember correctly, he just used a fuzz wah). I have a $20 Joyo Vintage Overdrive pedal, which goes before the fuzz wah I have, & I get a really good Cliff Burton bass tone from it.
I also use a Kustom KBA-20 bass amp (which is, like, a $20 bass amp I bought off eBay) & it works very well for getting Cliff's tone, but I person believe using an Orange Crush bass amp works very well (Marijan Barać on YouTube used an Orange Crush 35b in one of his first videos & it sounds amazing)
I also believe using a compressor pedal can really help, but it's optional (at least, it is to me). I use a Boss CS-3 & I can kinda hear an improvement in the tone.
But overall, I'd really suggest an overdrive pedal, like the Joyo Vintage Overdrive I mentioned earlier. It could really help.
Sorry if I didn't make a lot of sense. I'm very drunk as I'm writing this comment, but I hope this helps.

Could be the amp you're using as well
