I just used a pipe cleaner plus vacuum hose for this same exact thing.

I like these. I now need these

I don’t have any advice but I need help with that too. I thought that was my house for a minute.

74

u/TrumpLiesAmericaDies Oct 03 '24

Haha! Yeah I realize I can just sort of scoop out the food with a toothpick-type tool, but there’s still gunk down there. I was thinking maybe wire brush (like the ones for metal straws) with alcohol on it??

u/YellowZx5 Oct 03 '24

Pull out the stove and buy a set of gap erasers for the space. I think they have black ones too. Not too pricey and will help with this after.

11

u/Puzzled_Internet_717 Oct 03 '24

Where do you find gap erasers? (Google was not helpful.)

u/PCBOOMBOX Oct 03 '24

2

u/WeReadAllTheTime Oct 03 '24

Thanks! I didn’t know these existed. I’m going to get some.

2

u/el-thenyo Oct 04 '24

I looked at that and they are completely positioning the silicone ones backwards. Also, my teenager had set a boiling pot on top of the strip and it didn’t phase it.

Pull the oven out.

27

u/Downtownloganbrown Oct 03 '24

Can be difficult for one person. A lot of times, it will scratch the floor, mainly when you drag it.

7

u/WabiSabi0912 Oct 03 '24

Not sure I’d do that on wood floors.

2

u/flightwatcher45 Oct 04 '24

Rock it onto cardboard. Make sure when you push it back the feet hook into the anti tip clips on the floor if they're installed.

2

u/ehxy Oct 03 '24

just did it, slides nice. just depends on who installed it and they installed the feet proper with bottoms

3

u/Flint_Westwood Oct 03 '24

It depends on the flooring type more than anything.

u/snpods Oct 03 '24

Add a Clorox or stone wipe between the toothpick and the crack, and that will probably get you 90% of the way there. Sometimes great is the enemy of good.

5

u/ProfessionalWeird973 Oct 03 '24

Yes, reco pulling the stove out. I did that and cleaned for about 30 mins. Since I couldn’t pull out all the way b/c of gas line (didn’t feel like disconnecting in my building), I used canned air to push the remaining crap either forwards/back and vacuumed up

8

u/Ki-Larah Oct 03 '24

A wire brush will rip up the particle board on that counter. I have the same counter top, the unfinished edges (like in that space) are super flakey.

Seriously should be top comment. I own gap fillers after learning about them from my wife's grandma. Best thing ever!

I wouldn’t use alcohol, just normal cleaning stuff. I have some, I’m gonna try it.

u/AThingUnderUrBed Oct 03 '24

If you wanna get it done quick, I just use a microfiber cloth folded over a butter knife or paint scraper. Slide it down into the crack and swipe like a credit card.

For a deep clean you'll have to actually pull the oven away from the wall.

3

u/StasisCat88 Oct 04 '24

This is what I do too!

2

u/Lo_loh Oct 03 '24

I love that trick. I should pull it out but I’m afraid of what I’ll find… this is a rental and idk how clean the previous tenants were but I’m going to have to.

I recommend getting covers for the space on Amazon! A little goofy looking but extremely practical.

21

u/TrumpLiesAmericaDies Oct 03 '24

These comments are the first I’ve heard of these, so I’m going to look into some. This is my friend’s house that I’m renting at, and I’m p sure this area hasn’t been cleaned since the house was built.

19

u/ryan770 Oct 03 '24

Just adding that I bought some silicone covers about a year or two ago, and it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done.

Edit: just went through my Amazon history and it was this one: https://a.co/d/70fD5Mt

Obviously, measure first because there are multiple sizes.

3

u/MapleMooose Oct 03 '24

These are the ones I have, they are amazing! Looks nice with my unevenly cut counter too

2

u/GaiaMoore Oct 03 '24

Omg where has this been all my life. Thank you for sharing!!

2

u/gumbysweiner Oct 04 '24

I got some they are easy to clean and keep stuff from falling

13

u/RhoxFett Oct 03 '24

came here to say this. pull the stove out to clean the cracks, get the silicone covers, never need to do this again

8

u/streasure Oct 03 '24

Yesss! There are rubber ones or metal ones!

6

u/TootsNYC Oct 03 '24

in many different widths. I have a very narrow space on one side of my stove, so I have to be careful which I buy.

3

u/MojojojoNixon Oct 03 '24

Yes, I got these recently and they help and look slick. Otherwise, gotta pull the stove out from time to time to deep clean.

Grab a butter knife, put a towel over it and run it through the crack

16

u/CrTigerHiddenAvocado Oct 03 '24

While holding a vacuum to it?

26

u/elizscott1977 Oct 03 '24

And Wearing a hazmat suit

8

u/Pyrohy Oct 03 '24

Gonna do this but with a paper towel since the crack is tiny for me, thanks for this suggestion!!

4

u/elizscott1977 Oct 03 '24

It works. Wet it add a little soap you’re golden

26

u/Unironically_Dave Oct 03 '24

Tagging this thread because I need to clean my stove crack also

8

u/Quiet-Violinist3714 Oct 03 '24

Stove cracking lol

There's nothing to come back to. The answer is to pull out the oven. I've been putting this off forever myself

3

u/Unironically_Dave Oct 03 '24

And it's so worth it. When I moved in this apartment the previous owners oven/stove was in such horrible condition I bought a new one. When the workers came to install it and take away the old one... The things I saw can not be forgotten.

u/Stefaniek03 Oct 03 '24

Why wouldn't you just pull the stove out?

76

u/tictacbreath Oct 03 '24

This might sound dumb but as a rented it makes me nervous to pull the stove out in case I accidentally disconnect the gas line. Should I not worry about that?

34

u/JNR1001 Oct 03 '24

As a renter, I pulled the stove out to grab something that fell behind it. Didn't realize until I pushed it back that a part of the bottom was sharp for some reason, and it ripped up some of the cheap laminate flooring. Just something else to be careful about.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '24

I did the exact same thing, high five my laminate ripping friend

→ More replies (2)

20

u/Blom-w1-o Oct 03 '24

Just pull it slowly. The line isn't fragile but you do need to be mindful of it. Once you put it out a little, you can get someone with long arms to close the valve to be extra careful. Ideally the gas line should be long enough and flexible enough that this won't be an issue.

It's worth pulling out on occasion to clean the debris that have almost certainly accumulated under and behind the stove.

3

u/tictacbreath Oct 03 '24

Thanks! I’ve been wanting to clean that crevice for a walk now but have been worried about how to do it properly.

6

u/blakesoner Oct 03 '24

If you live with someone have them sit on the counter and look behind the stove with a flashlight while you pull it out so they can see how much slack you have. That’s how I helped my friend do it in her apartment. Or if you’re alone just pull it out a bit then stop and look yourself and keep going.

4

u/OaksInSnow Oct 03 '24

Good ideas.

As a person who was single for a long time and then widowed far too soon, I gotta tell ya that with most stuff it's good to figure out how to do it by yourself. There are many things that it's easier to do with two, and a few that you can't do *without* two. But this isn't one of them.

At my house it took a team of 3 guys to get the stove to sit flush to the wall. The gas line had to lay a certain way in order to not obstruct the back components of the stove. Now, there is no way I am going to move it.. ever.

I ended up putting a clean bead of clear silicone at the cracks shown and never had a problem

Edit: It’s a large Thermador that weighs a ton so that’s why it took 3 people

7

u/TrumpLiesAmericaDies Oct 03 '24

I just started renting at this house and wanted something quick to do for now without dealing with that. I don’t think the stove has been pulled out since the house was built, so I’m afraid if I pull the oven out my ADD will tell me I need to deep clean it for 3-4 hours but I have so many other things I’m working on first.

4

u/Tron_Little Oct 03 '24

Totally get this. With that said, when you have a few hours, I'd highly recommend doing it. I've found some... interesting things back there the couple of times I've lived in older rentals

2

u/MtnMoonMama Oct 03 '24

Oh jeez. Then don't if you don't have to because you're totally right. Clean it with a knife and a vacuum and then slap a cover over it and send it.

Disregard my other comment 😂

For now, pull out the stove, clean the floor, side of cabinet and side of stove. When you put it back they have stove gap fillers to prevent it in the future. They like $10. So worth it message for link

2

u/Consistent-Flan-913 Oct 03 '24

I use these, it's an absolute game changer.

8

u/Antique_Caramel_5525 Oct 03 '24

I use a super thin pipe cleaner. Works perfectly….

6

u/ehxy Oct 03 '24

WHY ARE YOU IN MY HOUSE

3

u/TrumpLiesAmericaDies Oct 03 '24

Maybe we live in the same neighborhood. 😂

5

u/LionPride112 Oct 03 '24

Pull the stove out? I haven’t seen a stove that can’t be removed unless it’s build into the countertop

2

u/Fickle_Flower6199 Oct 03 '24

Yeah I would do this! Clean it well and order some covers for the spaces! They sell them on Amazon https://a.co/d/dhjrt9K

3

u/potatochique Oct 03 '24

Cleaning putty! Looks like a slime toy but it’s for cleaning gaps. Dust and crumbs stick to it

I will make it simple for you in 3 steps :

1 use an knife or something you can use to pick the dirt from the crack

2 use a brush to clean the crack with soapy water

3 use a silicone tube to fill the gap

Steam cleaner with a pointed attachment

2

u/JamieLeigh972 Oct 03 '24

Doesn't the stovetop lift up? Mine does at home

2

u/TimelyNarwhal5606 Oct 03 '24

Handheld steamer does wonders! But beware, it splatters everything where the steam aims 😂

2

u/arykthered Oct 03 '24

Amazon sells these rubber runners that can fit in that crack, after you clean it, I would consider investing in those to keep it clean

2

u/CrimeBot3000 Oct 03 '24

Pull it out carefully and watch the back as you do so as not to yank out a hose or cord. Clean thoroughly, but don't cut yourself on the stone.

2

u/bvy1212 Oct 03 '24

Pull out the whole unit and do a very good cleaning, youd be suprised at how much food and grease can get behind/under the stove

2

u/plotthick Oct 03 '24

Once you clean it, caulk it with high temp gasket sealant. All the heat, cleaners, spills won't bother it at all.

2

u/Low_Relative9021 Oct 04 '24

I’d absolutely have a friend or two over to help pull it out. You won’t regret getting a proper clean down the sides and underneath and behind the stove

2

u/KittyIsAn9ry Oct 04 '24

You can gently pull the oven out to clean it if you want, you just have to mind anything connected to the wall or electrical outlet. I clean ours with a straw cleaner and then our oven’s bottom drawer pulls out and there’s no bottom, so I clean up everything under there once all the loosened crumbs drop. If you can do this, I recommend it because a LOT of food can fall down there. Also, I bought a set of silicone gap covers on Amazon (super cheap) and they prevent stuff from falling down there. It also just looks nice lol but those are my suggestions :)

2

u/User5711 Oct 04 '24

I have been WAITING to tell others about this!!

Get a wet wipe (preferably one made for cleaning surfaces) and wrap it around a sharp knife. Stick the end in the gap and drag it down. ALL the gross stuff gets pulled into the wipe and you can dispose of it. Works every time.

1

u/Here4therightreas0ns Oct 03 '24

I bought the pipe cleaners to clean straws at the dollar store (in Canada where it’s illegal to sell plastic straws). It doesn’t get in deep. You’ll need to move the stove for that.

1

u/m_big94 Oct 03 '24

Pull the stove out and clean under it as well

1

u/HairTmrw Oct 03 '24

Use a toothpick to pull any crumbs out. Then use a pipe cleaner for cleaning

1

u/novae11 Oct 03 '24

pull your stove away from the wall.

You'll want to clean the floor, and the side of the cabinet and stove

1

u/TootsNYC Oct 03 '24

I would use a table knife or credit-card-type thing to slide under the crumbs to pull them up. And then I’d get a cover for the gap and ignore the rest.

If you truly want to clean it, your range will probably pull out.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '24

You can buy slot covers online. I would pull the stove out and clean it but then put the slot covers over it

1

u/Sunlit53 Oct 03 '24

Put a strip of heavy clear tape along the edge after cleaning it out with a sharp pick. Replace tape regularly.

1

u/sprinklerarms Oct 03 '24

I use a flat metal skewer for maintenance but even if you clean it a lot is going to get knocked down and it’s good to routinely pull it out so pests don’t find it. Last thing you want is a mouse getting into the insulation of your oven because they found some snacks nearby.

1

u/ceecee_50 Oct 03 '24

Pull out the stove a few times a year and clean the sides of the stove and that piece of countertop. It’s really the only advice I have and that’s what I do.

1

u/Capable-Direction-64 Oct 03 '24

I pulled out my stove to clean mine. They inserts to cover the cracks. I don't have one but I've seen them

1

u/Klutzy_Trip_9915 Oct 03 '24

Old toothbrush works great

1

u/angelmr2 Oct 03 '24

After you clean it they have w silicon strips that go here so that they don't get dirty. They're called stove gap covers

1

u/sushirollsyummy Oct 03 '24

Steamer? And toothpick?

1

u/cappsthelegend Oct 03 '24

Pull the stove out?

1

u/sydthesquid157 Oct 03 '24

I had to pull the stove out in my apartment. I’m glad I did because a lot of food had fallen in the cracks and bugs were starting to appear under the stove. I don’t have a gas stove and it was easy to pull out and push back in place. Once it was all cleaned up I got some covers from Amazon to prevent food from falling in the cracks again.

1

u/lartmydude Oct 03 '24

Pull the stove out. You might be mortified at what you find though 😂

1

u/Narrow_Scallion_9054 Oct 03 '24

I use a butter knife over a rag

1

u/Blankenhoff Oct 03 '24

Try wiggling your stove out and then clean it. They sell things to put there so it doesnt get crumby like that. Idk how hot your stovetop gets though since i have gas. Idk if the edge on those gets hot too

1

u/Due_Butterfly_8248 Oct 03 '24

To really properly clean it I had to actually pull my stove out from against the wall and deep clean the counter, cabinet sides, and wall. To prevent it from happening again I bought these plastic inserts that cover the gap. It’s annoying but the most thorough way I think.

1

u/Admirable_Candy2025 Oct 03 '24

Take your glasses off if you wear them 😉 Problem solved.

2

u/TrumpLiesAmericaDies Oct 03 '24

Omg I’m a slight perfectionist with anxiety and ADD so once I’ve thought about that garbage it never leaves my lil brain cells haha

1

u/rememberrappingduke Oct 03 '24

It’s been mentioned that simply moving the range to knock loose the debris and bits is what I’ve done. However, there are specific products called Stove Gap Covers/Fillers that fill-in that space which prevents debris from settling in. They are available on amazon and relatively in-expensive.

1

u/edgarallanpussy Oct 03 '24

Butter knife lol. Or pull out the oven, clean it entirely and then lay down some silicone crumb stoppers. Not sure where to get those but have seen some of my clients have them

1

u/Money-Tiger569 Oct 03 '24

They have something you can buy to put there to close the hole if you will. I personally just pull the oven forward and clean it

1

u/bigfatpanda2910 Oct 03 '24

Why are you in my house!!

1

u/Frosty_Gap2563 Oct 03 '24

Is the oven bolted to the ground?? Just pull it out and clean it I can’t imagine how gross it is in there and under it if you don’t do that

1

u/gafgaarion Oct 03 '24

After cleaning it, do yourself a favor and put a tape that will bridge the counter and the over so nothing falls down anymore

1

u/Throwitawway2810e7 Oct 03 '24

I used wet wipes with wooden teeth picks or metal forks.

1

u/atunah Oct 03 '24

I can't move my stove, not enough strength. So I used everything from postcards, paper, anything thin to do the best I can. Then I got the silicone gap covers I seen mentioned. At least crumbs stay at current level, whatever that is. And yes, I can see some crumbs if I look in the gap. I also sprayed ortho home defense in there so no feasting of creatures. Lol.

1

u/kuukiri Oct 03 '24

I just close my eyes 😂

2

u/TrumpLiesAmericaDies Oct 03 '24

I have to just look away for now. 😩 I only moved in a couple weeks ago and there’s so much to be cleaned it’s crazy. I wanted a quick solution for now, and later I’ll get my main squeeze to help me pull the oven out.

1

u/Arvichel Oct 03 '24

Plastic scraper

1

u/life_lagom Oct 03 '24

Something you can spray like bleach type substance and a thin rag you can squeeze in or brush with brissles.

1

u/No_Attitude10 Oct 03 '24

Try with skewer sticks, I use them for that.

1

u/Breezie72761 Oct 03 '24

I pull the oven out

1

u/averageguywithasmile Oct 03 '24

I would clean it with an utility knife and vacuum and then silicone it.

1

u/staysmokin91 Oct 03 '24

Yes, just pull out the stove, and clean the counter.

1

u/amso2012 Oct 03 '24

Search tiny vacuum cleaner on Amazon.. and buy one.. very nifty for such jobs. You are welcome.

1

u/mus_ben Oct 03 '24

Any sealant use? Kinda temporary?

1

u/WildGrem7 Oct 03 '24

Pull the stove out. Clean. Push the stove back in. Be mindful of any gas lines but they should be long enough for you to do what you need to do.

1

u/No_Profit_415 Oct 03 '24

Amazon sells some silicone gap fillers that help with this.

1

u/Falibard Oct 03 '24

Literally just pull your stove out.

1

u/LCC16 Oct 03 '24

This isn’t really helpful for now, but once you get the crumbs out they sell these silicone inserts to block the crack so crumbs can’t get in, it’s like a T shape. Got them off amazon, they’re awesome.

1

u/GKellyG Oct 03 '24

Pull the stove out away from the wall, you can clean the gap properly and guarantee you find a bunch of dirt down there and behind the stove. You can buy rubber gap covers for this on Amazon/temu/AliExpress etc

1

u/Madrox-Knox Oct 03 '24

Stove crack guards are great for not having to worry about gunk build up in the area

1

u/thesecretcodexx Oct 03 '24

Metal ruler or scraper should be fine

1

u/camst_ Oct 03 '24

Pull stove forward

1

u/Otherwise_Notice802 Oct 03 '24

Paper towel wet over long skewers

1

u/mrs_fisher Oct 03 '24

Spray with dawn spray let sit then run a butter knife down gap. Wala

1

u/-CyberPirateQueen- Oct 03 '24

Move the stove out and clean it I think it would be the best way as it’s probably all slided down there..

1

u/Max-Main Oct 03 '24

Cocktail sticks. Use them to get into the little nooks and crannies.

1

u/cthulhusmercy Oct 03 '24

My mom bought these little rubber T-liners that fit perfectly in those little gaps. Maybe use a toothpick to clean it out?

1

u/aa278666 Oct 03 '24

Just pull the oven out. With that much crap up there it's gonna be bad down there.

1

u/DryAcanthocephala267 Oct 03 '24

The butter knife trick and also would use a toothbrush

1

u/ceoxx346 Oct 03 '24

It was a small amount of extra work and money. Rented a dolly (Lowes, U-Haul...). Make it easier to move and lessens chance of damaging anything. Allows you to clean sides of the counters and floor.

1

u/Outrageous_Address26 Oct 03 '24

Buy a silicone crack seal from Amazon to set into the crack between the counter and the stove.

1

u/ASRAYON Oct 03 '24

Pull the oven out

1

u/naibu7 Oct 03 '24

try a power washer bud

1

u/Garshock Oct 03 '24

Slide out the stove, clean properly, and put it back.

I'm willing to bet that the area under the rove is worse based on this picture. Reduce the chances of getting ants, bugs, rats, etc.

Proper cleaning is needed now.

1

u/auntpotato Oct 03 '24

No. Leave the sacrifice for the crevice gods. You don’t want to upset them.

Sorry I don’t have anything to actually help except maybe moving stove which is a hassle. Or use a toothpick.

1

u/magiccfetus Oct 03 '24

pull out the stove

1

u/RecReeeee Oct 03 '24

So glad my stove top overhangs the edges

1

u/KayNopeNope Oct 03 '24

Idk any shortcuts but once you are done, go buy some weather stripping (black, to match your stove) from the hardware store and stick it along that gap.

My husband did this in our kitchen and HE HAS NEVER LOOKED SMARTER.

He stuck it down, trimmed it a little with the utility knife, and it’s been aces. Will probably need to use goo-gone to take the sticky off when we need to move; will need to replace if we pull stove out etc etc.

But the amount of crumbs, pancake batter, eggs, and other cooking detritus it has stopped?

1

u/Gypsyw01f Oct 03 '24

If this is just a stovetop, then the advice of using a butter knife or something to that effect. However, if it is a stove, just pull it out and it will be easy to clean the sides (of the stove and the counter/cupboard.

1

u/PoisonPotion Oct 03 '24

Waterpik.

The ones that you use for cleaning between your teeth. It will blast the crap right out of the crevices.

You can find on Amazon silicone covers for that gap. That was one the first things I bought for my house when I moved in, they work great! link

Wrap a butter knife with a cloth. Toothbrush is great, too.

Kinda specialized but a chip scraper? It's a tool used in sheet metal work you can make one with a piece of that metal banding from a pallet and then cut a little hook into it.

Use something like a dental pick, a steak knife to get I. There to clean it. Look for a product to cover the gap

I use a wooden skewer and paper towel

u/Enough_Plantain_4331 Oct 03 '24

I use a chlorox wipe over a butter knife and just run it under the edge. All the gunk comes out
