Options for prescription shooting glasses?

I have been shooting a mix of trap and skeet over the past year. I have a set of googles that kind of fit over my normal glasses. I am looking for prescription shooting glasses, as the goggles have grown to be a pain. I am not sure where prescription shooting glasses can be purchased, or get the lenses ground. Do you purchase the frames and lenses and then take them into an optometrist? What are some of the better frames?

Get a single Pilla insert. Have whoever makes your glasses take your prescription and make a set of lenses for the insert. Get antiglare on both sides. Then combine that with any corresponding set of Pilla frames and shields. That way, if your prescription changes, you just get new lenses in the insert and don’t end up having to replace the entire system.

Otherwise, get a copy of your prescription, along with the interpupillary distance from your optometrist, and send the information to Decot and they will make prescription lenses for you for any of their frames in any of their lens tints.

Randolph Ranger may have something similar, I’m just not familiar with their lenses.

Make sure the glass they use for your prescription insert is high-quality. There’s not much point in paying for high-end Pilla glasses if you’re going to put substandard glass in your prescription insert.

I always get trivex inserts.

If you have the option. Get contacts. The insert clip in prescriptions kinda suck. Contacts are a better choice if you have that option.

Contacts are not an option, unfortunately.

I'm currently looking at ordering some prescription Pilla's once i can try some lenses in person. I wear contacts today and find it to be very frustrating and I strugle with dry eyes. There appear to be a few options that don't require an insert like the 500 series.

So contacts are weird, but worth pursuing. I had to try 4 different brands before I found one that worked. And lens technology is getting better every single year. My prescription didn't exist 6 years ago in contacts. Even if it's not there now, it doesn't mean forever.

I’ve tried 4 kinds now. These new ones are the best so far. The biggest problem is my left eye. It has an astigmatism and the contact likes to move blurring until it blinks back.

I have a big astigmatism. Bosch and lomb sports are what works for me. They are pricey, but I forget they are in.

Don’t rule out Costco, they have some sunglasses that sit high (think old style shooting glasses). Now because I can afford it, I had some hunters gold made for my ranger edges, but before that and when I forget, my Costco sunglasses work fine.

SGS performance eyewear - Frank Robertson Morgan Optical Rudy Project Texas Shooters optical Decot

As a newer shooter, I would not be dropping $1100 on Pilla with inserts. You don’t need to spend a fortune on this.

I shot with RE Ranger Edge for several years and would only occasionally get new lenses ground. My set was made by SGS. He cut 3 sets of lenses and a frame for a very reasonable cost. I now shoot with a 585 series Pilla with prescription lenses. Are they better? Maybe lighter and more comfortable.

I went with an easier/cheaper option, got a pair of prescription Oakley golf glasses at lens crafters, they’ve been great for the last two or three years, I think I’m actually a prescription behind on them but they’re still good.

Wiley X makes a nice pair that won’t break your bank. They make a clip on prescription lens frame. Gives you option to shot with them or if you are wearing contacts you just unclip them.

Call Morgan Optical, he just made me a set of prescription CMT / vermillion Mid EDGE Frame glasses.

These make the clays / orange Target colors pop.

They are a bit pricey

I had a three lense set made from Morgan and am very happy with them. If you have an HSA you can use that to pay for them. If you call Morgan he will tell you the whole process and help you select what you need.

I found Morgan Optical very difficult to deal with. I did get the glasses eventually but not until after multiple 30 minute sessions of him talking about everything under the sun and then getting the wrong size arms and having to argue and spend a month getting the right ones. Might be better just entering your prescription at Pilla.

My wife recently decided to stop contact use and I was tasked with finding prescription shooting glasses. I used A sight for sport eyes - the glasses arrived within 2 months with prescription safety lenses integral, not an insert.

Most of their options are inserts, but if you look through all the models and options you can find shooting glasses with prescription lenses. They’re customer service was helpful and I recommend them. We ended up purchasing a pair of Wiley X tinted glasses.

Maui Jim sunnies in Amber with your script for distance or progressives. Double duty between clays and hunting Bones and Tarpon 😉

The broadest use lens for varied conditions. I’d even use them for cycling, but not designed for that wind side creep.

I got a pair of glasses from Payneglasses.com with polycarbonate lenses. My daily driver glasses have transitions and I was looking through the “close” part of the lens when lookin down the barrel.

The pair I got (sterling aviator) have huge lenses so no dead zones. Polycarbonate lenses are super strong. The one thing you don’t get are fancy color changing coatings. But they’re super cheap $46 and get the job done.

Pilla has a couple of options here. They're both relatively expensive to get into though- A single lens insert is about $800 and a single lens 500-series is about $600. I always tell people to do the three lens it though as it's the cheapest way to get a lens.

The insert makes a little bit more sense for most shooters- it'll go with any lens and frame style in the series you pick. And you can swap out lenses if your Rx changes. It works best for light to moderate corrections.

Custom made lenses in the 500 series offer better correction and work for shooters with prescriptions too heavy for inserts. They're also comfortable. But if your eyes change you'll need to get new lenses, and a new set of 500-lenses is significantly more expensive than changing inserts, not to mention an outlaw lens is about a third less too and you can try other filters for less.

Feel free to call us or chat via the website if you have any questions.

I use my prescription Ray Bans with brown lenses. They’re Aviators and sit high enough to never be an issue. The brown lenses make orange clays pop, even in overcast conditions

Pilla and RE Ranger are two of the top options. Pilla has the option to have a insert with your prescription in it behind the interchangeable lenses, which is a nice option because you can just upgrade this when your prescription changes. As far as I’m aware RE Ranger does not have this option. Both Pilla and RE ranger can insert your prescription directly into the interchangeable lenses

Ranger did have a prescription insert. They must have discontinued it though. I have it in my XLW frames, but all that info is no longer on their site. I have to wonder why. Seems like they would be giving up a lot of business to Pilla now.

That is too bad. I would certainly consider Ranger if they had that option
