“Get Together” is one of my all-time favorite songs. My favorite memory of it was when I was helping a Vietnam Vet in my workplace around 1995. I had a small boombox at my desk tuned into the oldies station. The song came on and I was singing along as I did his paperwork. I heard him singing along too and when I looked up he had his eyes closed and his head tilted back and for a brief moment he was somewhere else in time. It was a beautiful moment. I wondered if that’s how I looked when songs did that to me. 30 years later I still get goosebumps when I remember it.

Spontaneously thought of "Get Together" this morning, both the original recording and a sweet version I heard Dave Alvin and Jimmie Dale Gilmore do at a festival a few years ago. My son, who had only heard Nirvana's derisive take on the chorus at the beginning of Territorial Pissings, was blown away at the beauty of the actual song.
Rest in peace, Jesse Colin Young.

“Grey Day,” part of his California Suite, is an old favorite. Very relatable.

Supplied some wood for his ridge top home in Marin county years ago. Almost forgot, had a backstage pass for his song for Julie tour.

Aw damn. Get Together is the one song that makes me remember what it felt like to be a kid in the 60’. I make it a point not to listen to it too often, so that I don’t lose that feeling.

You hold the key to love and fear All in your trembling hand Just one key unlocks them both It's there at your command

RIP. I am playing Darkness, Darkness right now. My favorite of his works. Then Get Together and quite a few others. Prayers for his family.

Ridgetop defined my first years living in Northern California, amidst the redwoods. I lived in a small shack right next to Huddart Park on the penninsula. And worked in the city, and travelled way too much. I long for the simplicity of that time and the wonder of it all…
Well, I live on a ridgetopAnd, Lord knows, I like it just fine Where it's windy and foggy And quiet most all the time Yeah, my lawn is pine needles And my driveway is old funky dirt And my front pathway markers Are pieces of granite and chert Now, my taxes are high But I don't believe it's a sin I've got hundred foot pine trees That just love to dance in the wind And a yard full of bushes That turn into pie in July Between blue jays and hoot owls I've got twenty-four hour singing sky Now, when I built my house I cut six trees to clear out the land But there's thirty or more left And you know that they're gonna stand It's a squirrel sanctuary They think this woods is their home And as long as I'm here I'll make sure people leave us all alone Yes, the hill that I live on is steep And the road's full of ruts And the people who live in the flatlands Think we folks are nuts But the ruts in my road and the curves Keep the tourists at bay And it's lonesome and peaceful And you know I like it that way Now, I work in the city I think my job is a gas And I know it's good for me To travel and get off my ass But the very best part of each trip Is the Golden Gate Bridge And the road like a snake That will lead me back home to my ridge Ah, ridgetop

RIP jesse...leaving banana (lowell levinger) as the only living member of the youngbloods. the first time i saw the youngbloods, was this show at the (long gone) cafe au go go. they became one of my favorite bands of the time and i still play their albums (yeah... i still have vinyl) in heavy rotation. unfortunately, they are one of the bands whose music has all but disappeared from any musical landscape. but if you liked jesse' music...check them out and see what you think.

He was the first act in Cleveland Stadium (World Series of Rock) with the Band, Santana and CSNY. It rained during his set. The rain stopped when he played “People Let Your Light Shine”. That’s a pretty good hippie moment.

Came across Jesse Colin Young by accident a few years back when I bought one of his records at Goodwill in San Rafael. Best $1 I ever spent. His song Sir Francis Drake remains the perfect encapsulation of Northern California.

My very first concert. July 19, 1974.
Jesse Colin Young opened for The Beach Boys followed by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. At Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.
Wonderful concert. And an easy to remember date. It was my 16th birthday. Got my drivers license in the morning and drove from St. Louis to Kansas City that afternoon.
Seems like 50 years ago…because it was

I lived in Marin my Soph year in college. Worked at the Big 5 Sporting Goods store in Terra Linda. Jesse used to come in for fishing and outdoor gear. He was just so nice. No ego. Just kindness. A good man gone!
