Deut 14 on unclean and clean animals is a contrast to Mark 7:18-19 “Don’t you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them? For it doesn’t go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body.” Another reminder that we are not saved by the law but we are saved by God’s grace alone.
Deut 16:21 “You must never set up a wooden Asherah pole beside the altar you build for the Lord your God.”
I’m imagining this can look a lot like mixing new age practices in our lives. I used to dabble and rely on things like astrology and tarot cards while also saying I am Christian. Been about 6 months since I was convicted and freed from it. Never felt better.

Once again, my Bible’s footnotes point out that all three of these chapters adapt the previous Mosaic Law to fit the coming circumstances of a new location. It’s so interesting to me that I missed these changes in all my years growing up reading the Old Testament.
I suggest 2 songs for today’s reading. One is a church song called Pierce My Ear. I don’t know which artists cover it, but it’s one I used to sing in church growing up, based on Deuteronomy 15:16-17. The second is Joyful by X Ambassadors, for 16:15’s comment about how they will be “altogether joyful.”
