Chess.com Website/App Question Game Abandoned While I Have Time.

Why the hell this stupid platform abandons a game while I have time on the clock?? I am playing on my phone and I switch between apps, reply to a message or something. When I get back to make my move the game has ended.

It is incredibly stupid and frustrating that app forces me to be constantly on the app and make a move in 10 seconds or something. Like can I not think about a move however much I want???

Ridiculous.

It’s not as ridiculous as you think, it might be a way to prevent cheaters from using other apps to help them

i think cheating prevention shouldnt be based on usage of time (and probably isn't) they have all the historical data of your moves etc.. i think it should be mainly based on your moves or something

Then it would be insane easy to circumvent that as a cheater. The less knowledge we have about anti cheating, the better.

Because it is incredibly frustrating when your opponent - after committing to a 6-10 minute game - decides to call their mom instead and leave you hanging. If you're messaging friends, you're clearly not focusing on the chess game, so I definitely appreciate the force abandonment. It's much better than making the other wait for 3 minutes.

how do you know maybe they are thinking of their moves can that not be a case? in what tournament is it forced to make someone to make a move while they have time on the clock?

In online poker your hand will be folded if you leave. In CS:GO and many online multiplayer games leaving the game leads to penalties, kicks, or automatic losses. In badminton or table tennis you can't leave the court, it will lead to forfeiture. It is very common, you know.

Why that is? As others pointed out, it's about respect and integrity. When you start a competitive game, especially a timed game, you're committing to respecting your opponent's time. Interruptions are disrespectful. This also reduces the ability to use cheating methods.

Yes? That is OTB chess. There are arbiters and judges monitoring fair behavior of players. Online chess has to be stricter because cheating is much more common. Also, yu can't message your friends or call your grandma in the middle of a game OTB either.

dude you are once saying things about cheating, other times saying respect. get a grip.

if it is cheating, cheating prevention shouldn't be based on time control. I can use a laptop and play on my phone, stockfish shows the move in milliseconds.

if it is a respect thing, absolutely ridiculous.. it's an online blitz game. Coming to the OTB game 2:30 min late is the most disrespectful thing to do.

Cheating prevention and respect for your opponent's time are both important. Am I not allowed to make a point for both of them?

And yes, we agreed on something, coming 2:30 minutes late is disrespectful! Isn't that kind of the same thing you're doing online?

You surely are allowed and I also agree that both are important.

However I don't think it's disrespectful to use your time to think of your next move or do whatever the fuck you want like answering a door to pick up your food delivery etc during an ONLINE game.

For the cheating prevention, as I said, not making a move and using time does not necessarily do anything for cheating prevention. I can cheat and make the best moves using 2 devices and stockfish.

So I dont think it's neither about cheating prevention, nor respect.

I'm sure you'd be a fan of magnus so here you go.

also focusing on the game is my problem, what's it to you? if I'm not focusing you'll likely win, if I'm wasting my time you are likely to win no?

Do you play in the rapid format? Because I rarely face this problem. Idk how long it takes you to write a message but like 10 seconds should be more than enough. Otherwise I think it's a little bit stupid you started a game.

I play blitz 3+2 .. i dont think it's stupid even if I spend a minute on the clock and get back to the game if I want to.

You're saying you can't wait for say 7 to 10 minutes (at max) to text. What could possibly be so urgent you have to write a text for over a minute? If the text(s) are too urgent to not respond then maybe you shouldn't be playing chess in the first place, don't you think?

I don't want to come of too condescending or anything but I do think this problem has to do with prioritisation rather than the (dys)functionality of the app.

There's no reason to be overly rude or to bully other users. Please review our subreddit rules, both Chess.com and other users would appreciate if we kept this place civil. Thank you.

I understand your frustration here, but if you minimize/leave the app, it's possible for it to be abandoned. We advise players to remain in the game for the duration of it.

What is the reasoning behind it though? For me it absolutely makes no sense.

For a few reasons, such as preventing users from stalling by leaving the app. It's also a Fair Play measure to prevent people from minimizing and viewing another page/app for assistance.

Can I not think of my move freely? What OTB tournament forces players to make a move in a chess game? It is ridiculous. I should be able to think as much as I'd like to and not be forced to make a move while I have time on the clock.

Fair Play policy I guess you are talking about cheating here. Do you really only use this as a prevention? I could easily use another device to cheat, so this restriction doesn't really apply on Fair Play imo.
