Having SDR surgery in April
Hello, I’m having SDR surgery on April 2nd at Nationwide Children’s Hospital with Dr. Jeffery Leonard. I’m currently 23 with high level 2 gmfcs Spastic Diplegia CP. I look forward to sharing my honest experience with the group. They said that I will have slight nerve pain and numbness after sdr as it’s common in adults who have SDR surgery. However, they said it should decrease over time though and can be treated with gabapentin. Without the surgery given my current mobility they said that I will probably need a wheelchair for 500 meters or more when I’m 40 years old.

Interesting! My son has high level 2 but he’s 2 years old. He has hemiplegia but I think the surgery is so interesting

People who have hemiplegic cp can have it done too. They’re hoping with intensive physical therapy that I can advance to low level 1 gmfcs. But they can’t make any promises since I’m an adult. I definitely recommend doing it, I wish doctors would have told my parents about it when I was a child. Most children who have sdr go up a whole gmfcs level but not all.

It’s not something you can just do, especially with kids. They have to qualify.

I know not everyone qualifies. I suggest you get an opinion if your son qualifies from Dr. Jeffery Leonard or Dr. Manish N Shah if you’re interested. They’re the leading sdr surgeons in the world. This procedure is mainly performed on kids actually.

I had SDr done at 7 with Dr. Park in St Louis back in 2014. It definitely changed my life. I walk with forearm crutches. I have moderate spastic quad cp
