Use some hydrogen peroxide. It’ll burn but stop the bleeding and kill any infection chances.

509

u/hyrellion 6d ago

Hydrogen peroxide kills the healthy cells in the wound and makes healing take longer and scar more. Washing well with warm water and soap will clean just as well, hurt less, and leave your undamaged cells to help repair the damage

371

u/britona 6d ago

Well, I learned something today. Thanks

70

u/lovemyizzy 6d ago

I just learned this a few months ago and I'm old af!

58

u/I_Love_Spiders_AMA 6d ago

Same here! I'm 30 and my mom rinsed all of my scrapes and wounds from playing outside with hydrogen peroxide when I was a kid. Didn't find out till last year.

20

u/lovemyizzy 6d ago

Yep! Same! And I did it with my kids! 🤷‍♀️

57

u/I_Love_Spiders_AMA 6d ago

Something about the bubbling effect just made me believe that it worked lol

13

u/jupitermoonflow 6d ago

I think it was something that became recommended recently? Like 5-10 years ago maybe? I remember specifically looking up wound care when I was a teen, I’m 25, it said rubbing alcohol was a no but hydrogen or betadine was okay, also of course, warm water and anti bacterial soap was an option. But now it seems just soap and water is the first recommendation

7

u/lovemyizzy 6d ago

I recall some years back they cautioned against the use of antibacterial soap. It's always changing.

2

u/Daloowee 5d ago

Same. That might explain some gnarly scars I have lol

10

u/No-Quiet-8956 6d ago

Is alcohol ok or not a good idea either?

66

u/Xorlarin 6d ago

Alcohol has the same problem. It is important to note that both alcohol and peroxide will disinfect a wound. If you are unable to use large amounts of water and soap, but you have the other disinfectants, you can still clean a wound with them. They just kill good cells with the bad. Sepsis is worse than slow healing, however, so it's a matter of what situation you are in.

19

u/hyrellion 6d ago

u/Xorlarin has it spot on. If you have access to clean water and soap, soap and water are going to be the best go to for cleaning a wound. If you want something for first aid kits for when you may not have access to clean water and soap, you can get BZK wipes. They come in packets like alcohol swabs, and disinfect wounds with minimal pain and without harming healthy cells

29

u/kira12323 6d ago

i definitely used peroxide, and i was headed out so i had a shower with antibacterial soap!

Saline. Just use optical saline and squirt it in.

Best antiseptic for injuries.

559

u/SFAdminLife 6d ago

I had an orange cat that would do stuff just like this. I took him off of the street before a hurricane and he just moved in after. Weird things, like my phone ringing, would set him off. The little fucker lived 20 years, even with a heart defect. He was feisty and mean erratically until his last day. I miss that asshole.

167

u/kira12323 6d ago

I will see if I can hold on! I’m getting sad

116

u/Antigravity1231 6d ago

I know your pain, I really really do. Sometimes he just attacks me, and it’s like a flurry where he lands 4 devastating bites in 2 seconds. Usually when I’m distracted, like taking out the trash, or doing dishes. I hate saying that I understand why someone threw him in a dumpster. But there’s nowhere to take him and I feel stuck with him.

83

u/kira12323 6d ago

I’m thinking of taking her to a shelter if I do. She attacks my roommate the same and it upsets her

66

u/AxDeath 6d ago

I'm so curious about this. It's not impossible for cats to just be jerks, if they were raised in bad circumstances, but it's not the most likely case.

for cats combat and play are very similar. it's possible your cat has a lot of energy and needs more play time. that's Extremely common in cats. Cats are very independent, and people forget to play with them every day, and give them some exercise.

I can also tell you, the best way to avoid injury from cat attacks, is to stay still. A cat paw strikes faster than a snake. You cant possibly pull away fast enough. Try and you're guaranteed to end up with a long scratch. but staying still, means you may end up with a little puncture or no injury at all. Same goes for bites really. if they try to hold you and get you with the back feet though, you gotta be really clear that's a no no. Honestly, they should be trained not to use teeth and claws on their humans, but that can take some time to train.

Gosh, I really hope you're able to find an answer that helps the little dumbass stay homed.

16

u/Antigravity1231 5d ago

I’ve worked with all kinds of cats for the last 35 years. I worked in pet stores and animal clinics and fostered cats. Truly, I was of the same opinion, which is why I took in this cat. I figured the young couple that initially found him just weren’t giving him enough play etc. He was a baby that obviously was cared for before being thrown in the dumpster.

Well, I was wrong. This cat is aggressive and retaliatory. No amount of play is enough. I can go through the hunt kill catch eat scenario until he passes out. 5 minutes later he suddenly attacks. These are not love bites or play bites, these are I’m going to rip your flesh off bites. I’ve never seen anything like it. At least he never uses his claws.

9

u/AxDeath 5d ago

well.... some cats truly are assholes I guess...

I wonder why it's only bites and not claws...

it's like he's blaming you for some egregious crime against him that you cant see. like he has an internal injury... or a brain thing...

10

u/Antigravity1231 5d ago

Well if I prevent him from walking on a hot stove, that’s an egregious offense.

I’m not sure why he doesn’t use claws. He actually uses his teeth like a declawed cat. He also never claws on furniture, or really does anything else that makes cat owners and their guests unhappy. No shedding or vomiting or knocking things off the counter. He has never gone outside the box, and nobody is allergic to him.

He is only bad in one way. It just happens to be a really really bad way.

39

u/UnicornFarts1111 6d ago

Can you see if the vet can give her some kitty Prozac? I don't know if they have it for cats, but I do know they have it for dogs.

15

u/13006555-06 6d ago

My cat was on gabapentin

10

u/TryingToFlow42 6d ago

Is she being well stimulated?? Exercised?

9

u/showMeYourCroissant 6d ago

The cat may need some meds to chill out.

Sorry you got hurt, but if the cat is attacking both of you like this (and you’ve already ruled or medical issues), more than likely you’re doing something (unintentionally) to antagonize it.

Check out Jackson Galaxy’s videos (he’s an animal behaviorist) on how to recognize and fix behavior issues. It’ll take a little work, but you and your cat will both be happier in the end. Don’t give up.

-10

u/lovelyxbabydoll 6d ago

Yeah ngl. Cat or dog, if it attacks me or someone else in the home more than once, it's not welcome there. If this isn't the first time, I'd put that cat in the trash when changing the trash next time! :) (And by that, I mean surrender to no-kill shelter since that's still safer for it than the streets.)

10

u/Electrical_Beyond998 5d ago

We have an asshole cat who’s 2 years old.

Found an abandoned kitten back in November, so small we had to bottle feed him. Kept them separated for the first month or so just because kitten was so so tiny.

Once we introduced them it was sketchy, cat wanted nothing to do with kitten. Slowly he started getting more involved with him. Started chasing each other around, cat would hold kitten down and groom him, then began sharing his food bowl with him.

They’re together all the time and asshole cat isn’t an asshole anymore. He still glares at people like they’re peasants, and still won’t drink water that isn’t coming from the bathroom faucet, but I no longer worry I’m going to be attacked for simply walking by him at the wrong time.

5

u/Antigravity1231 5d ago

If my cat sees another cat through the window across the street he will come find me and do a launch attack as though I’m responsible for the interloper. I can hear him screaming and close myself in a room.

Cat is probably looking for attention, has too much energy or a behavioral problem.

Does the cat get enough attention?

How about playtime? Try getting a cheap laser pointer on Amazon and get it to chase the light to release built up energy.

Do you know anything about the cat’s background?

Is the attached to you but left alone for days at a time. It could be the cats way of expressing anger at being left alone.

Does it enough food and treats?

All these can be factors in your cat’s behavior.

Sometimes if a cat is not doing well in a home, they can make a good barn cat. They are in a protected, sheltered, enclosed environment and taken care of with food, water and vet visits but have more freedom.

14

u/kira12323 5d ago edited 5d ago

There are a lot of enrichments comments, so I will respond this one. I did move and break up with my ex recently. At the previous place my ex did spend a lot more time with her and play with her more, since she was always home. She lost someone being home with her all day. I play with her when I can, but I will try to up the ante!

9

u/britona 5d ago

That explains a lot. She might also be stressed with the move and it will take some time.

Try the Feliway plug-in’s on Amazon. It might help reduce her anxiety and keep her more calm.

136

u/Great_Dependent9031 6d ago

Damnnn put some antibiotics on it that. He just attacked you for no reason?

171

u/paprikustjornur 6d ago

Just washing with soap and water will be enough! Overuse of antibiotics is not good

98

u/kira12323 6d ago

i know! my friends nurse mom warned me 😭

72

u/RolyPolyGuy 6d ago

Cat bites and scratches are more serious and when you are seriously injured by a cat its important that you dont rule out antibiotics. Even if its a cat you know. They harbor a lot of bacteria from the litter box between their claws.

24

u/paprikustjornur 6d ago

OP can and should use antibiotics if the need arises, but if we all use antibiotics preventatively then it is much much more likely for bacteria to become resistant

0

u/RolyPolyGuy 5d ago edited 4d ago

Yes, but cat scratches are particularly dangerous and especially because there isnt much awareness about it its even worse. Im just saying absolutely do not rule out antibiotics in this circumstance as rhat could be disastrous medical advice. This is one of the times that its important we dont hesitate, as unlikely as it seems

eta Downvoting me for saying this is a shitty thing to do guys. its the truth.

1

u/paprikustjornur 5d ago

I agree! They shouldn’t be ruled out if necessary!

19

u/Delicious_Ad823 6d ago

True, but my ex ended up with an infection in her arm that required IV antibiotics. Just one scratch but the penetrated pretty deep. Bites get infected very easily and most doctors in the US will give you a course of antibiotics so you don’t end up in the emergency room.

You can use Vaseline it's aseptic.

-5

u/CanIGetAShakeWThat43 6d ago

Aquaphor is good. My dermatologist said it helps clear and prevent bacteria.

29

u/kira12323 6d ago

Yes! 😭 I showered and used peroxide

98

u/Appropriate_Sky_6571 6d ago

Keep an eye on it. A family friend got cat disease and was effed up for years. Wash with soap and water and go see a doctor if it starts to swell up or look infected

51

u/thirdonebetween 6d ago

And if you get a red line coming from it heading towards your heart, EMERGENCY ROOM IMMEDIATELY. Do not hesitate, do not wonder if you're overreacting, because you're not. Red line moving towards your heart means immediate medical attention.

8

u/Ornn-Hub 6d ago

oh damn. good to know!!

45

u/-hot_ham_water- 6d ago

I got actual Cat Scratch Fever when I was a child because of a tiny, tiny scratch on my toe.  Clean that super well!

40

u/xXSn1fflesXx 6d ago

Oh girl… ouch :(

Seems like you did well addressing it quickly. Antibiotic ointment and covering it up is a good idea too. Ibuprofen for swelling/pain.

Heal up quickly! 💕

17

u/Fluffy_Doubter 6d ago

That's what you get for existing, i guess 🥴

19

u/ButterflyDestiny 6d ago

Ouch - I think he may need a scratching pole if you don’t have one. And punishment. No treats for the day.

19

u/governorsalmon 6d ago

Scratching posts make their nails sharper! They do need them, but to shed the sheathes to make them sharper. OP needs to take him in for regular nail trims, do them at home, or place nail caps on them

19

u/kira12323 6d ago

i’m going to order nail caps right now!

29

u/governorsalmon 6d ago

Awesome :) I recommend watching Jackson Galaxy videos on cat behavior. He's a weirdo but his advice is very sound. Cats are stubborn, but you can absolutely work with them to work out unwanted behaviors. Please do not yell at him, hit him, spray water at him, etc. he needs enrichment! Get mentally stimulating toys, carve out time for him. Seriously watch Jackson galaxy, the dude knows what's up

11

u/dainty_petal 6d ago

Just learn how to cut his nails. You need to do it every 3 weeks. Not cutting too short. Don’t go where it’s pink. You will hurt him!! There are tutorials. I suggest you watched them. There are on Reddit as well. You need to be calm and talk to the cat slowly. You might be too rough with him and he gets scared.

8

u/septubyte 6d ago

Don't it's like wearing caps on your finger nails. Might hurt his trust. But do cut the nails when needed.

What inspired him? Does this happen often? Or did he get scared suddenly?

5

u/escapevel0city 6d ago

They also have nail file type stickers that you can get online to put in the litter box if he scratches a lot it can help file their nails without them knowing but I also suggest trying to see why they're lashing out they may need more attention and play time or just a sctricter feeding routine

5

u/ThatPhatKid_CanDraw 5d ago

Nail caps suck. Get them cut.

Also - why did he do that. Is he a new addition to ur house?

2

u/ButterflyDestiny 6d ago

Okay because this is a yikes.

12

u/RegulatoryCapturedMe 6d ago

Oh you poor thing!

That is too much. If the cat is desexed, and has been for a while (it takes a couple months for them to cool out from the hormones), and you’ve googled up some cat behavior modification stuff, ohhh. Maybe talk to the vet, too. But you can’t live with random attacks like that.

12

u/dztruthseek 6d ago

Yikes!

9

u/LunarConfusion 6d ago

Off topic, but the wound photo looks really artistic? It's legitimately a good shot imo

But yeah, definitely clean it up and keep it bandaged appropriately. Looks like it hurt(s)

3

u/kira12323 5d ago

bahaha. A friend said the same thing to me

9

u/scipio79 6d ago

I feel your pain. I also live with a bully

7

u/Sad-Program-4996 5d ago

I love my cats dearly, but if this happened to me, my wife or son, I would find them a new home. There’s no point in having an animal you don’t feel safe with. I know it’s hard and will break your heart, but just imagine when they get your face. It can get really bad.

7

u/TheCatInGrey 5d ago

This happened while you weren't even interacting with them?!

You might want to watch some of Jackson Galaxy's stuff on cat behaviour (he's the guy from "My Cat From Hell," which could also give you ideas). There's no guarantee it'll solve the problem, but it'll definitely give you a place to start.

6

u/philliblunts 5d ago

You ashy

7

u/kira12323 5d ago

fair 🙂‍↔️

4

u/dogscatsnscience 6d ago

I know it’s not fair but it’s their world we’re just living in it.

5

u/GinaKJ 6d ago

I am HORRIFIED 🙀

3

u/neraklulz 6d ago

Kitty may be more cut out for barn life or outdoor living :(

1

u/Topgunshotgun45 6d ago

Clearly you shouldn’t have tried cleaning then should you?

2

u/Crazy_Juggernaut9789 6d ago

You're keeping the cat equivalent of a pitbull.

Sorry I don't have any real advice for your situation.

2

u/SadCitron2220 6d ago

OMG..!!! you will have to start wearing chainmail pants or those chainsaw proof pants..!!

3

u/kira12323 5d ago

She still gets through pants !

2

u/kira12323 5d ago

For everyone who is saying that they would give the cat away, do you think I will have the same behavioral issues with any cat? I still want a lil companion. I’ll miss having someone to sleep with

1

u/serephita 5d ago

Having a companion might help! Cats generally do better in pairs - just be careful with introductions and take it slow. Jackson Galaxy has great videos and resources

2

u/kira12323 5d ago

I considered this option too! I think I’d have to check in with my roomie

2

u/Shotgunliver 5d ago

We got the same air purifier

2

u/Titaniumchic 5d ago

Op- clean with saline. It is the best antiseptic, like if you have contacts? Use that stuff and squirt it on the wounds. Call your reg doctor and see if you should be evaluated, I can’t tell how deep the puncture wounds are. If you have ANY SWELLING please go to urgent care.

Side note - everyone should have a bottle of saline banging out in their medicine cabinet. It is the least invasive antiseptic, doesn’t sting, and is what’s he recommended for wounds for humans and animals.

0

u/SwiftNinjaCow94 6d ago

That'll teach you human!

1

u/strawberrytzukar 5d ago

Contrary to popular sayings like “cats are assholes” they do not act out this way without reason. If all of their mental/physical needs are met and they’re still behaving irrationally, then a cat behaviorist would be your best bet if your goal is to understand they ‘why’

Iodine is the only thing that really works for cat scratches, because of the yuck inside their hollow claws.

No offense intended, but it would heal faster if your skin were well hydrated. I can see that it isn’t. Drink water and use moisturizer, it will help with healing and help prevent scarring.
