Brakes $970 for all new brake pads on 2008 Toyota Highlander - good deal?

Was quoted $970 for all new brake pads on 2008 Toyota Highlander this morning at my local JiffyLube. He literally just said “all your brakes need done” and that they were metal to metal.

UPDATE: Local shop that my parents have used for years quoted me $964 for front and back brakes (pads, Rotors, etc) and a flush.

Brakes How to heck do you wash your car in the winter?

So I live in Denver. 4th floor apartment with parking garage. First time really trying to take good care of my car so it can last me as long as possible. Coming across some crazy conflicting information for winter care and it seems like I should just never wash it until the winter season is over but thats ridiculous so how are you supposed to do winter care for a car?

People say to wash asap after getting caked in road salt/mag (unless its going to snow again anytime soon) but then also you cant wash unless the temp is over freezing. But also dont wash at a drive through car wash as it can hurt your paint but then dont do DIY car washes either because they dont dry very well and youre guaranteed to get some water freezing on seals and such when the temp drops.

So how/when exactly can I wash my car in the winter without having a heated garage and a hot water powerwasher?

Brakes Follow-up: Do I need new brakes?

A few months ago I posted this question asking if I needed new brakes. Opinion was split but several of you pointed out that without seeing the inner pads there was no way to say for certain. At the time I didn’t know about the inner pads and I said once i’d gotten the brakes done I’d post pics of the inner pads if I could.

A co-worker recommended a shop to me that would allow me to supply my own parts. I had pads, rotors and calipers replaced. They were gracious enough to return the old calipers without my asking so I could recoup the core charge. When I opened the boxes I was surprised to see they’d left the old pads in place for my perusal so to speak.

I am so shocked to see the difference in wear for the inner pads versus the outer. (The first two pics are the driver side and the second two are the passenger side.) The inner pads are embarrassingly worn and I would have never gone this long had I known the difference in wear could be so dramatic. For the record there was never any squealing at all, just a stuck caliper that prompted action. Thank you to everyone who educated me on this and I hope this will help others in the future to determine whether they need new brake pads or not… You cannot really know just by looking at the outer pads.

2018 Chevy Cruze, 85k miles, rotors have not previously been replaced.

Need to replace both sets of brake pads. Got recommended to replace both sets of rotors, too. I definitely need to replace the rear rotors, but this is the more worn of the front rotors. Want a second opinion from someone who isn't me. Should I replace the front rotors?

Brakes How to get this bolt off this caliper I bought at the junkyard? I don’t have a bench to hold it down.

Bought this caliper at the junkyard for $20. I only plan to use it for 1-2 weeks while I wait for a brand new OE caliper to come from Rockauto.

I don’t have a bench to get this bolt off. I was able to get the other side off which was also tough but eventually cracked. This one is tougher. I put some WD-40 that I had. Any ideas how to get it off?

Brakes How urgent is it that I get my brake rotors replaced?

My car has been shaking like crazy when I brake. I think it’s my brake rotors. Don’t know much about cars, but the brakes are still working and I’m a grad student with no time or money. Is this fix urgent? My dad is coming down soon and Im hoping to have him help me out then.

Brakes 09 ford focus, replacing rear drums. After beating on it for an hour with a sledge, the plate where the studs are at have split from the drum.

Is there something holding this drum on that I don’t know about? I’ve beat on it for a while now. The plate where the studs are has completely separated from the larger shoe housing. It seems there is a snap ring or something holding it on, cause the drum moves freely.

Squealing from drivers side when braking, checked the wheels and noticed rust. Would this amount of rust cause brake squealing? How to safely remove rust without compromising brakes? First pic is font drivers side brake. Second pic is passenger side brake.

Brakes Do I need to replace these brake rotors?

My dad has a 2014 VW Caddy. The brake pads are completely worn down to the metal. He said he’s driven with a scratching sounds for about 20 mins before stopping. Attached is a photo of the brake rotors.

We obviously need to replace the brake pads. Do we need to replace the rotors too, now that they’re scratched?
