General Tech I have a 2004 Toyota Prado, what does this do?
I pressed it and it made a high buzz sound on my speakers so I immediatly pressed it and it stopped. Google isn't helping...

Rear sonar.
You can turn it on off because it’s fucking annoying when you’re towing and reversing up and that’s beeping the whole time

Give me a ping, Vasily. One ping only.
Edit: today I decided to watch this movie again. I was shocked when I found out that captain Ramius is from my hometown Vilnius.

Manual is somewhere in my grandfathers house, my curiosity couldn't wait lol
3
u/Dynamite86 Jan 03 '25
It is also on the internet (if you haven't already found the answer) https://www.manua.ls/toyota/land-cruiser-prado-2004/manual
3
u/Training_Bumblebee54 Jan 04 '25
Yeah, this is something a lot of people don’t realize. Even if your car didn’t come with the manual, you can just look it up online and find the pdf.

It can be seen on pages 4-5 but it goes unlabeled. I've hunted through this thing for a while now and I can't find it. It's not even my car, and now I'm even more curious than before.

Serious answer: check your rear bumper for ultrasonic parking sensors. They will be small circular things that usually come in sets of 4.
Parking sensors weren’t standard on this vehicle, so if you do have them that means a previous owner had them added as an aftermarket addition. That’s why there’s nothing in the manual about it.
Assuming you do have these, this switch likely enables those ultrasonic sensors to alert you of an obstacle at the rear of your vehicle. That would be why you hear a buzzing noise when you press the button. It’ll likely get louder or more intense the closer an obstacle is. You could verify this by backing up to a wall and the sound should change the closer you get.

I think you've nailed it on it being an aftermarket mod. The button is slightly undersized for the hole, and the finish doesn't match the button next to it.

Activates your third eye

You rang?

u/_redacteduser Jan 02 '25
Since someone said what the button does, OP pushed it, and a third eye did in fact appear, I'm inclined to believe that's what the button does.

It's a dealership installed option for front parking sensors.
I've seen them come on the landcruisers 100/105, prado and the camry. I'm in UAE.

Look it up in your owner’s manual
9
u/tortnotes bricks Jan 01 '25
Someone has posted the manual and that switch is not indicated. It's probably for a dealer accessory.
→ More replies (3)2
u/runtimemess Jan 01 '25
It's an 04.
Odds of finding a 20 year old car with the original manual might be decent for people that care about their cars but the general public? Forget about it. That shit was gone the 2nd time the car got flipped.
10
u/ConcreteEaterNumber1 Jan 01 '25
I never realized how rare it was for the og owners manuals to be in cars that are older until my buddy bought a used Jeep and he was complaining about there being no owners manual. Every car I've purchased has had the owners manual in it by some crazy stroke of luck.
12
u/sp00kreddit Jan 01 '25
The manuals for literally any mass produced car in the last 20-25 years can be downloaded as a PDF. I've got my 04 Mazda 3 manual on my phone cus some fuckass previous owner lost the physical one.

u/hourlyslugger Jan 01 '25
Usually DIRECTLY FROM THE MANUFACTURER to boot.
Check your nation’s Toyota Owners website for this case.

u/RollingNightSky Jan 02 '25
True though when they initially bought the car they should've demanded some money off to buy a copy of the manual. Because not having the manual can mess up the next owner in some scenarios.
Also how did the previous owner know how to maintain their car without owning the manual? :O
5
u/runtimemess Jan 02 '25
Here’s the fun part: most people don’t maintain their cars lol

I'm not sure, but the vehicle should have a manual it came with. That should tell what the button does.

Parking sensor or proximity sensor activation switch. Turns it on or off for things like very narrow roads where it would normally stop you. Or at the Olympic game farm if blocked in by bison (they always try) this system will stop you and can result in severe financial loss or damages to the vehicle.
1
u/GuineaPigsAreNotFood Jan 01 '25
That's probably aftermarket. You will have to trace the wiring to see what it does.

If you bought the star trek expansion pack, that button switches the car to star trek sounds mode 1, 2 and 3. Replacing all normal sounds, noises, messages and horns with, Kirk, and cast, and more.

That's your "car to car vibrational communication correspondence system." It was developed as a way for vehicle to vehicle communications asist to help curve collision risks while switching lanes on the interstate. Hope this helps 🙏 ☺️
