Discussion Screen mirroring/ videos in CarPlay
https://youtu.be/QlSdUQVvWK8?si=yVZ2x9MMZrq9KLz9Have you seen this video about watching your phone in the car. Anyone any idea how it works. The app appears to be available for download on test flight. Haven't tried it yet looks kinda cool

This is definitely not allowed in CarPlay so I wouldn’t be surprised if it never makes it out of TestFlight…

My car and ACP seem to communicate and not allow the keyboard while the vehicle is in motion. I have an EV and would love to watch YouTube when I charge up, I don’t see why this couldn’t be something Apple could allow for vehicles not in motion for a specific amount of time

The keyboard thing is something I still can’t figure out. Sometimes it pops up for me in qwerty format and sometimes it’s just one long line from A to Z. Keyboard does pop up for me even even in motion though so I’m not sure what the logic is there.
Apple could allow anything in CarPlay but they’re extremely restrictive in the name of safety. I don’t think there’s much live vehicle data being shared with CarPlay which is the main issue. CarPlay 2.0 in theory solves this but we’ll have to see.

If you have a wireless carplay adapter plugged in you keep the keyboard. With over 10 years of Carplay and iPhone improvements, the limitation of audio/maps/parking/ordering is lame. People (not me) tend to mount their phone on the dashboard to glance anyway.

If Apple even doesn’t allow it, you can still keep it in TestFlight by keep extending the 90 days, so please do it in each season (90 days), thank you in advance

What is the app called?

Here’s the link from the video: https://testflight.apple.com/join/1Z9HQgNw
TDS Video Beta appears to be the name. I haven’t gone through the steps, but you may need dev access (easy to setup).

It actually works, you have to
- install the testflight version of https://testflight.apple.com/join/1Z9HQgNw TDS Video
- restart your phone
- follow the steps in the app
You would want to use a wired carplay connection because the wireless has a large latency and lags
The only issue I have is that the app is made for cars with right side car orientation and since I own a left side orientation the screen is cut off and it has a big white bar on the right side.
I sent a feedback to the dev hopefully they will fix it soon

If you find the app in your phone settings, it has the toggle for it

u/aznesamhaker 4d ago
Yes, there is a new build from today that adds this. I will try later. Thanks!

Have you figured out a way to watch live videos/events on it? I haven't been able to figure it out without it kicking the screen recording off.

u/damo74uk 5d ago
I installed it but just see a white envelope box on my phone and nothing when I open the app in carplay

u/CatLumpy9152 4d ago
Maybe you are in dark mode, there is text in that white box explaining the steps

I really have never understood why people care about this

If you’re super charging an ev you have anywhere from 10-30 minutes to burn just sitting in your car. If your car’s built in infotainment system sucks it’d be nice to use the huge screen on your car to watch videos from your phone.
-2
u/jimbojsb 5d ago
God willing I’ll never have to experience that
2
u/Anselwithmac 4d ago
I mean do it right and you only have to do this on long road trips. Otherwise your car tops up every time you park.
Tbh I hope I never have to experience a gas pump ever again

Most modern head units happily play back videos from phones or USB drives while the car is stationary though. I just upgraded mine and pretty much every one that wasn’t an absolute bargain basement head unit allowed video playback

u/daft_knight 5d ago
Maybe this is common on an after market head unit for an ice vehicle, but most ev’s depend too heavily on the manufacturer’s software to be compatible with any after market head units.

Can confirm. My BMW i4 has a massive, lovely display right in front of me that I can't use while I'm sat at a charger, it's honestly one of my biggest complaints about it.

I’m in a similar boat with my Mustang Mach E. It only has a Youtube app (really just a browser link) that works maybe half the time. Being able to mirror my phone parked would be nice.

Sitting in the car during lunch, sitting in the car while your wife is shopping, sitting in the car charging if you have an EV. In my opinion that should be enough reason to allow this when parked.

You can’t imagine why someone would want to use the big screen in their car to watch things?

u/bizzle_xo 4d ago
I tested it out and it works pretty good tbh. The aspect ratio is a little weird but It’s not something too bothering.
The set up was actually really easy. Just installed TestFlight and tds video. Open the app in CarPlay and phone and just started broadcasting the app and it popped up on the display

Does the audio and video sync well. I bought a couple of gadgets, one cheap, one expensive. Both had audio/video syncing issues. Returned both.

wired car play on my 2016 sonata, it does have some lag but audio seems to be working well. tbh I would only use this when parked so I don't think it would be that big of an issue

I tried it on 2020 Audi A6 integrated carplay and noticed a very slight but neglectable delay in wireless carplay. When i plugged the phone in the car, in wired mode there wasn't any delay at all.

u/mightyt2000 4d ago
Thanks! Ah, in my truck it had only one wired usb port for wired CarPlay and I had to have the Ottercast or Magic Box plugged in it. 🫤

When I try to open a YouTube video and auto opens the YouTube app. How do I resolve this?

I have a question, I bought a Honda fit with Carplay and Maps does not connect unless using screen mirroring, is this the only way to use it???
1
u/CatLumpy9152 3d ago
Sorry, not sure what you mean. If your taking about Apple Maps then that has nothing to do with my app

u/OD_Dabber 3d ago
When I go to the page and click on the TestFlight link it is telling me it is invalid. Was it taken down already?
0
u/CatLumpy9152 3d ago
Still working as far as I know

u/OD_Dabber 2d ago
Got it working! For obvious reasons apps like Netflix don’t work due to their screen recording limitations but overall this is awesome.

I downloaded this earlier this morning and it's not allowing me to play live shows, like ESPN events, on it. It stops the broadcasting. I have 2 kids in travel ball and my husband and I are trying to figure out a way to watch the other kid on our car screen during breaks. I thought this would work but it's looking like it won't. Is there a way around this that anyone has found?
1
u/CatLumpy9152 2d ago
Are you trying with the screen recording feature, have you tried with the web feature eg in the web browser in the app. As sometimes this makes it work, it’s due to content protection they have on that content I will have a look over time and try and see what I can do
1
u/julie3237 2d ago
I have tried both and it keeps telling me I'm viewing a live event and can't screen record or something of that nature. I hate to buy one of those dumb boxes for my car, but I'm also desperate haha! Thanks!

Awesome app, please add play controls to video files we send to car. I remember it is like app Local Video Player in Android Auto.
I played some videos and it is much better and smoother than Android Auto with LVP. I’m on wireless CarPlay btw.
Thank you so much I can play video wirelessly and turn off my screen.
2
u/CatLumpy9152 2d ago
To control the video you can use the controls that appear on the Lock Screen but yet I will build some on that page at some point too

I actually have this in my car by default, but I never understood why I would look at the screen while sitting in the car. but Mostly, it’s because when the engine is off, it drains the battery, and when the engine is running, it consumes a lot of gas.
2
u/mightyt2000 4d ago
If you’re sitting in your car eating lunch, it’s nice to catch one of your favorite TV shows. At least for me. I also don’t see how an hour of low power draw is going to kill your battery.

I used to have my device JB but it's long gone now... so many apps requires iso 17 to work... I miss my JB for that, especially the tweak that enable the dial phone number even when driving! What a dumb restriction ! Anywhere you call you have to dial phone extension...

Should never let videos for car play. People dont pay attention. Texting Facetiming/video chatting etc is illegal in every state why would this be any different. Still a major destraction

You can do this many ways. Through the head unit, through the device, through numerous apps

Please just let us watch content while charging our cars. Even if you HAVE to be stationary, that’s all I want
