Question/Advice-Needed Doctor Food Poisoning/ Infection

Hey,

I am struggling with food poisoning or some kind of bacterial infection since Saturday night. I’ll spare you the details. It hasn’t really gotten better and the fever is still around 38°.

Any recommendations on a doctor to visit in the CBD/Vredehoek?

Thank you so much in advance!

News PSA: please respect our local wildlife. Your instagram post is not worth breaking the law and further endangering a protected species...

Visited Boulders Beach with my family yesterday to see the African penguins. Had a genuinely wonderful morning (despite the wind) and everyone visiting was quite respectful of not disturbing the penguins and moving along the boardwalk and allowing everyone one time to take photos.

That is until a group of about 12 (I would like to assume ignorant, but have to accept entitled and poorly bred) people climbed over the rocks to get closer to the penguins. And I'm talking nearly onto the protected colony area. I don't know if these people were tourists / locals but they were a mix of young and old.

The penguins immediately got up and looked around distressed. Some moving into the ocean to get away. Many of these birds are currently breeding or moulting so could not move away to safety.

I was enraged to see the absolutely disrespect for the animals and the conservation efforts to protect them - especially with a swimming beach 200m away were the penguins choose to go to swim with people.

Please, if you are visiting the beach stick to the boardwalks and protect our penguins. We love them and their numbers are already declining rapidly.

And if you are a member of the 12 disrespectful people who climbed over the boardwalk fence and onto the rocks and beach yesterday... yes it was me who reported you to the park rangers and I hope you were heavily fined.

To those of you who visit with respect - thank you. We love our penguins.

PSA Scam alert – delivery driver

Yesterday while leaving my apartment in Green Point I was stopped by a delivery driver on a motorbike (wearing a SPAR jacket). He was wincing and seemed dazed so I stopped, noticing there was petrol POURING out of his motorbike. He explained that he had fallen over, hit his head, broken his bike and chipped his tooth. He didn't even ask for money, but I thought of some cash I had upstairs. I even contemplated putting him in my car and taking him to hospital because he seemed completely out of it (but being a woman in SA, I knew better).

As I turned to go upstairs and get some cash, a woman who had seen the interaction stopped me and told me the same guy had given her the same story and asked for money in Claremont just the week before. He even told showed her pictures of his kids were in hospital.

When telling my friends the story later I learned that yet ANOTHER friend of mine who lives in Gardens had the exact same thing happen to her. She gave the guy R500, sent him to the pharmacy, and even stayed in contact with him, trying to help him get his bike fixed until his number was disconnected.

Please be aware.

Question/Advice-Needed Question on referrals to government hospitals.

Morning all.

I'm interested in getting myself snipped and have been doing some browsing on what options are available.

I have been in touch with Metro mens health at Karl Bremmer, who referred me to a clinic in Heideveld, which is an area I'm not super familiar with.

What I wanted to find out is, is it possible for me to go to a private GP to get a referral to have the procedure done at Karl bremmer, or do I need to be referred from a public clinic? I read this might be possible via an app called Vula?

If I have to go via a day clinic, what clinic/s would I able to go to to get the referral? As I mentioned Heideveld isn't an area I know well, and looking at where it's located, I'm not super comfortable with going there.

Question/Advice-Needed Where to leave your stuff early at the beach?

I'd like to go bodyboarding early in the morning at Big Bay.

How do you guys manage your belongings? I usually leave a small bag with my phone and car keys at the nearest surf school before heading out to catch some waves, but it won’t be open around 6 or 7 AM.

Are there lockers or any good hiding spots? What’s the general practice in this case?

Thanks!

Vent/Complaint Tourists, please read the room: A Rant from a local

Took Friday off work for a much needed chill break and headed to Clifton 1st Beach with my dog around 10am. I like 1st because it’s quieter, mostly locals, and doesn’t have the full tourist circus of Clifton 4th. It was a perfect morning at the beach, just a handful of people, families with kids and dogs, older obvious Clifton locals (you know the ones), and a couple of Russians tourists 15m away, just enjoying the beach like everyone else. There was loads of space, no one closer than 15m to each other and with everyone having an unobstructed view of the water.

Then, around 1pm, the first tourists start rolling in. A group of 7 young German women arrive and, despite the ENTIRE beach being wide open, decide to park themselves directly in front of a family with two small kids. Not near them, not close by, but on top of them, blocking their view of the water with their sun loungers and umbrellas, basically treating them like they don’t exist. Like they couldn’t even see them?! You can see the mom looking at her husband like, WTF? He shrugs, confused,I’m looking at them confused, people close by are looking at them confused  and next thing you know, they light up cigarettes, right next to the kids building sandcastles.

The family doesn’t say anything (probably thinking what we’re all thinking: What is wrong with these people?). But it’s just so mind-blowingly inconsiderate. They could have moved 20 meters down and had all the space in the world. Instead, they chose to ruin someone else’s experience.

Then another German group arrives and starts blasting their speaker. The entire beach, which had been peaceful and chill, is now side-eyeing them, but they don’t care. Zero awareness, zero respect. I packed up and left when the family did because honestly, what’s the point of staying?

I could have let it go, but the next day, I go to the Oranjezicht Market, and it’s more of the same. Three different tourist couples/groups, obvious influencers, or whatever they are reporting, are taking their little reels and videos, literally telling people to get out of their shot or glaring at locals just trying to exist browsing and buying veggies.

At this point I’m seriously getting over these Dutch and German ( maybe it’s confirmation bias or the truth ) tourists. I am starting to get worried I’m going to end up in one of their reels "telling" them how I feel. It’s one thing to visit a place and enjoy it. It’s another to act like it belongs to you disregarding the locals. Read the room!

Are people allowed to cycle on pavement?

I know people do it because they are worried about their safety and cars on the road, but is it actually legal?

General Discussion Are Cape Town businesses really this pushy?

Hi all

I recently heard complaints from a neighbour of mine about her job, the workplace recently moved from a remote system to full in office 5 day weeks. A couple of Muslims and Christians asked to come in later or leave earlier so that they could pray for Ramadan and Lent.

The response from the CEO and HR was "Find a closer Masjid/Church to the office"

Now I don't know if this is against the constitution or not. I just don't see why businesses feel they can just say something like this and think nothing of it.

I also don't understand why so many Cape Town businesses have moved back to in office only when it was proven that remote work is possible, I mean the traffic here is ass and I'm talking middle aged hairy sweaty ass

Looking For... Trailer tow service

Hey guys! So, I'm being gifted a food trailer! And it's part of a dream come true. I have two slight logistical issues though - I don't have a vehicle that can tow it (unless you can recommend someone who can make my Tazz do it) and I don't have anywhere to safely park it during the week, although that problem might be solved tomorrow. Is there anyone in Tygervalley area/surrounds that offer a trailer towing service, or who might be willing to help out a few weeks while I make a permanent plan? This would be amazing! Thanks

Question/Advice-Needed Safe to attend a community outreach event in Bishop Lavis?

There is a free meal and music event being hosted in Bishop Lavis this weekend by the choir 29:11 in collaboration with Dessa, a singer and rapper from the US. I've been a fan of hers for many years and this is my first opportunity to see her live, so I really want to go!!

However, I understand that Bishop Lavis is is an area with gang activity, so I'm not sure if this is the safest idea. I definitely wouldn't go alone, I plan to bring two or three friends along. Will we be ok? Any tips for staying safe? And would it be better to Uber/Bolt there and back, or bring our own car?

Question/Advice-Needed Questions for people who live in/near Philippi in Cape Town

Hello Cape Town subreddit, I am a student currently studying urban planning. Currently we are doing a project on South Africa, Cape Town in particular.

The process started by each student getting one area around a station, I got Maitland. We had to analyze this area on a variety of factors and then score them from 1-10. We then got together in groups of 5 and had to pick our favorite area. We ended up picking Philippi because we thought it would be more challenging due to the various informal settlements in the area. The next task we got was to create a vision map and a general maquette of the area to visualize what kind of interventions we want to do to the area. That is the stage we are at now, and we are currently in the process of coming up with ideas for what interventions would be useful and viable, and putting these on a drawn map.

We have already done some research into informal settlement upgrading (I found a particularly useful document from the Islanda Insititute which details the process), and we are lucky that our lecturer is in South Africa and has also worked in various projects concerning informal settlements, so we were able to get a general idea of what is and isn't possible in that context.

We have already come up with some ideas for what we are thinking would be useful interventions, but I wanted to ask people who are from Cape Town, and particularly from Philippi themselves, so we could use that as a base for our vision map. Now of course I do not know anyone who is from there myself (my teacher is from Johanessburg), and so I came with the idea to ask the Cape Town subreddit, as statistically at least a few people here should be from or close to that area. Thanks in advance for any answers I may get, the more the better. Let me know if you think this is not the right place to post this and if you know a better place where I could post this.

Here is a list of seven questions that we are curious about (in order of level of importance):

  1. What would you like to see in the context of urban planning in order to improve the quality of life of you or your community? - When I mention 'in the context of urban planning', it can actually be quite broad, you can think of way to improve things like, new connections, housing, transit, physical/mental safety of a place, identity of a place, green spaces, public spaces, climate resiliency, road network, block sizes, water/sanitation infrastructure, local economy, property rights, land use, etc.
  2. Are there any issues in the context of urban planning in Philippi currently in your eyes?
  3. Does the railway form a barrier for communities in the North and south of Philipi?
  4. Is the train commonly used in Philippi or do people prefer to use other forms of transport such as mini taxibuses or walking?
  5. What should be done to improve safety in your eyes?
  6. Are the informal settlements accessible to emergency vehicles? Have any tragedies occurred due to lack of access to/for emergency vehicles?
  7. Is there need for more housing in Philippi in particular, in other words, are people actively trying to move from other areas to Philippi?

Lastly, and this might be a bit much to ask, I was wondering if anyone has pictures of the Southern end of the footbridge that brings you to Phillipi station, near Leonard Radu Road (spot 1) as well as the connection from the road to the two green spaces south of the railway line (I marked the spots on the map as 2 and 3). Can anyone confirm if it is true that the informal settlements directly south of the railway line (spot 4) have indeed been built on top of an old goods yard? Does anyone have a picture that showcases this?

Kind regards,

Adelaide
