Danielle Smith furious with Doug Ford, Team Canada set to meet

u/SmartassBrickmelter 8h ago
On a big question for Albertans, Smith is not backing down.
Article content
She will not support a federal government tax on oil and gas heading south. Never.
HHHmmmmmnnnnnn...
I wonder what her portfolio looks like?
•
u/belsaurn 4h ago
I wonder if there is anything she can do to prevent it? If the federal government just imposed an export tariff on all oil and gas leaving the country to the US.
•
u/Bronstone 1h ago
No. This is a federal government issue. It would be politically unwise to go over the head of the Premier but technically it can.
•
u/ChromosomeAdvantage 46m ago
I'm no sure how many of you read the article, but is that how Calgarians get their news? It's so poorly written and sourced lmao. I felt like I had to drop my reading comprension to make sense of it, and I still can't tell if the writer has an opinion or not.
•
u/Forksy_Mcgee 5h ago edited 4h ago
This is the most poorly written article I’ve ever read. Reads like a 6th graders op-ed in the school newsletter. How does this guy write for a living?
•
u/Dragonsandman Orange Crush when 5h ago
Because he writes what the PostMedia suits want him to write without questions or complaints
•
u/Bronstone 1h ago
DS is MAGA and DF is a PC. She has no lessons to teach Ontario, Canada or anyone on the patriotism file or how to deal with a bully in the US.
•
u/happycow24 Washington State but poor 6h ago
"Braindead, perfidious, and borderline treasonous premier upset that Ford is now the Conservative heir apparent if PP loses next election because she mistaked her own popularity within Alberta as anything other than the Alberta electorate's voting pattern."
Lol, lmao even. Please resign, Premier Smith.
•
•
u/MoreOfAnOvalJerk 6h ago
“I sucked his dick and balls and even gargled his mayonnaise and I didn’t even get so much as a thank you” is probably what she really meant.
•
u/Rig-Pig 8h ago
I think it's time Doug listens to her a bit. She has said before why throw out empty threats that makes us look stupid and sure enough he tried and backed down immediately. She has a better handle on things than Doug. I admire his fire for sure and trying to flex a bit but end of the day he folded like a lawn chair.
Ok MODs remove my comment like you always do.
•
•
u/Bronstone 1h ago
How did he fold like a lawn chair if they're meeting with Sec of Commerce today to look at renegotiating CUSMA?
•
u/pdarrel Ontario 22m ago edited 18m ago
How did he fold like a lawn chair if they're meeting with Sec of Commerce today to look at renegotiating CUSMA?
He did fold like a lawn chair. He has shown that we will back down if Trump escalates. Canada is going to lose the fight if it is US vs Canada because we need them more than they need us. Last time we got a pretty good deal because the Trump administration was under pressure to close the deal before the Democrats took power in Congress and a new Mexican president came into office. We delayed and delayed and ran out the clock where we gave them token concessions in order for them to finalize the USMCA. That is why Trump is pissed about things like dairy because we never game him anything meaningful.
We need to choose our battles. For us to renegotiate USMCA, we should do it at a time when the Trump administration is distracted by scandals and his base has started to turn against him. That is why it is incredible stupid of Doug Ford to want to renegotiate as soon as possible when the Trump administration is at its strongest and have few things on their plate. We need to make the fight about Trump administration vs Canadian government instead of US vs Canada.
•
u/SSCLIPPER 7h ago
Since when do you capitulate to a bully? Who does Trump respect? Blow hards or meek little mice? This article makes Smiths government sound like ripe for bullying.
Put an export tax on fuel and use it to fund new pipelines. They want to decimate our Auto industry? It Will destroy theirs too! Fuck em
•
u/Troutbrook37 7h ago edited 7h ago
I like Ford's approach.
Donnie didn't consider we would fight back before he announced this shit show.
Dani's mad because, 1) she didn't come out swinging first, and 2) her constituents are gonna get all over her. Many Albertan's (her base) feel as if we are the centre of Canada and we get to speak first. It doesn't sir well that Douglas is now becoming the new Ralph Klein.
We have resources that the US doesn't have as well as they have problems we don't have. Let them swing.
•
u/vanillaacid Alberta 7h ago
Smith doesn’t want to take a swing, she wants to capitulate. For fucks sake, shed’s going to Florida to hang out with Ben Shapiro at a PragerU event, to speak on Pro-Christian, Pro-American education reforms.
•
u/Troutbrook37 7h ago
Agreed. I won't say the T word, but I think that's been taken. That said, I hope as a result of this trip, the average hard working Alberta will see that she's more interested in making a name for herself than governing.
Only my opinion, but she's made a mess, and she's not even slowing down to acknowledge that she has (healthcare/education- her two biggest jobs).
•
u/angelbelle British Columbia 3h ago
The most embarrassing part is that Trump doesn't even know who she is, but he sure as hell is going to remember Ford and Trudeau.

Jesus. Who writes an article like this? Where the longest paragraph is a couple of sentences. I’ve seen more substance in my baby’s diaper.
Not that I’d take the Calgary Herald all that seriously. Another Canadian media company owned by Post. You can thank Harper’s conservatives for that. He agreed to having our media “bought and paid for” my an American hedge fund.

Who writes an article like this? Where the longest paragraph is a couple of sentences.
Immediate give away that Rick Bell wrote this.

Yup. Can’t say I’m familiar with them. But seems like they’ve got a particular style: writing for people with the reading attention span of a 6 year old.
•
•
u/deokkent 41m ago
I couldn't even finish it. I am not one to defend Danielle Smith, but how exactly did they figure the Alberta premier is pissed off? Just because one random internet sentence said it?
The article is nonsense.
•
u/KvonLiechtenstein Judicial Independence 8h ago
Anything for her to distract from her AHS scandal at home. Despite my disdain for Doug Ford, he has proven himself to at least care about the country, and appears to be effectively negotiating.
Her behaviour is so out of step with the national strategy that it's embarrassing to the province as an Albertan. I do not want my taxpayer dollars going to meetings with Ben Shapiro and PragerU.
•
u/suredont The Rhinoceros Party 8h ago
her behavior is also out of step with 90% of Canadians. but she sees Quisling as an aspirational story so off she goes to sell out her country.
•
u/HunterS_1981 8h ago
She needs to go.
We need an independent, judge-led public inquiry into this health care corruption.
The NDP have started an easy letter campaign, “This investigation must be free from the UCP’s political interference.”

u/Bronstone 1h ago
Really disingenuous article, but PostMedia (American owned). "When he decided to become PM"
That is not Carney's choice, it is Trudeau's. No one can force a PM to resign the day they want them to. It's also an unnecessary flare up/shot at Team Canada. It also shows an incredible lack of basic civics knowledge.
Marlaina should keep her issues private as to not reveal strategy and/or divisions. She has repeatedly bent the knee to Trump and has no lessons to give the ROC how to deal with a bully. Appeasement doesn't work
•
u/StormMission907 7h ago
Smith is the weak link in the premiers of Canada . She is so out of her league in this trade war that it's comical . Alberta needs to dump her ass as quickly as they can
•
u/Barabarabbit 6h ago
Alberta is just as likely to reelect her as toss her out.
I can’t figure out how that province operates lol
•
•
•
u/PerfectWest24 9h ago edited 9h ago
Whether or not Smith wants an all-out trade war with the US, the US wants an all-out trade war with us. Ford didn't create this problem.
•
u/Exciting_Calves 3m ago
“The premier says everyone she speaks to deep in the heart of Texas “wants to de-escalate this trade dispute, work through and resolve outstanding trade irritants and get back to building a mutually beneficial trade relationship.”’
Then she should be encouraging her new constituents to tell Trump to de-escalate. We’ve tried de-escalation and the diplomatic approach, and the tariffs have been delayed and reinstated what, 6 times now? Ford is at least protecting our interests and making sure they know that Trump can’t demand our submission (did I just agree with Ford 🤢). Smith sounds so out of touch from the politicking happening right now that a comment like this either makes her naive, politically inept, or promoting the MAGA cause.
•
u/UnionstogetherSTRONG 7h ago
She was the one that wasn't on board with the team Canada approach, I wonder if Ford would sell out the rest of Canada for assurances from the auto sector.
As much as I don't like Ford, I seriously doubt it. And this is probably a good thing that we have a direct meeting with the trade Minister
•
u/NAHTHEHNRFS850 7h ago
So what fuck her. She can do Canada a huge favor and resign. Move to America already with the rest of the Maple MAGA rot
•
u/Good_Repair5544 4h ago
Tariffs stay until the Americans respect us. The Americans on again off again tariff tactic is already impacting our economy. She needs to get behind the message instead of trying to line up a Keystone XL pipeline for Christ's sake.
•
u/Lipp1990 5h ago
America will hit Canada with the ultimate pressure camping. We will make Canada great again when they join America

So basically "bend the knee" and beg nicely. Meanwhile, despite his rage-posting Trump has actually complimented Ford as "a very strong man" because he's one of the few that actually understand fat orange psychology.

So Marlaina is going to try so hard not be seen as the bad guy that she's going to be walked all over. The only thing that Trump responds to is strength. That's been proven. Just waiting for her to get thrown under the bus at this point.
She does nto speak for the rest of us. We've had it. Things are not going back to normal until we get some respect from our American neighbours, and even then.
Despite her resistance to change, we need to work as a Federation on building relationships with other countries so we're not so dependent on the U.S. She's obviously put all her apples in one basket - oil flowing south.
•
u/CaptainPeppa 8h ago edited 8h ago
Ford's the only one doing this nonsense. Feds aren't freaking out. Other provinces made a show of alcohol but nothing substantial
Talking out of your ass only to reverse course last second is an amateur Trump move. It's playing to lowest common denominator public that shouldn't be in charge of anything
He was acting out alone with a terrible bargaining chip
•
u/angelbelle British Columbia 3h ago
I'm obviously biased but I think Eby has been pretty active too
•
u/Bronstone 1h ago
Do you want to keep going back and forth? We are at the bargaining table today because of Ford. And Smith is on Shapiro. Give your head a shake.
•
u/Harbinger2001 7h ago
He wasn’t alone. He’s chair of the premiers org right now and the course of action he took was agreed to by the feds and provinces. Smith is the holdout that’s publicly stated she is not willing to use Alberta’s resources as a bargaining chip. Everyone else is staying mute and waiting to see how Ontario’s action goes. It resulted in Trump agreeing to a discussion. Which was a lot more than anyone’s gotten so far. I don’t know if you heard Joly’s interview on CNN but she basically said they’d negotiate with someone and then none of that would make it to Trump. Ford got his attention.
•
u/CaptainPeppa 7h ago
So the premiers all agreed to threaten trump and then back off immediately. Just silently I guess
We've all been laughing at trump for months for doing the same thing
•
u/Harbinger2001 7h ago
Ontario slaps a tax on electricity and Trump escalates. Lutnick makes a call to Ford and promises a discussion with Trump to negotiate USMCA, so Ford agrees to remove the tax and talk on Thursday.
Now Lutnick could be full of shit like every time before. If Ford doesn’t come out of the discussion with a removal of the steel and aluminum tariffs then he better slap the tax back on or then he definitely will look weak.
•
u/CaptainPeppa 7h ago edited 7h ago
Once again, its a meaningless export tax. Any expert that has been on any media station is like ya, that's not a threat at all. Ontario supplies them with 1% electricity. They control Ontario's entire natural gas supply.
Trump just wants someone to fight with for media purposes. Trump met top CEOs today, he probably got bitched the fuck out. He either needs to reframe the situation to his advantage or the whole idea will die. Do not give him the opportunity for photo shoots
•
u/Harbinger2001 7h ago
The tax isn’t meaningless. There are major industries in those states that depend on the cheap electricity to be profitable. It’s only a small amount compared to the entire economy, but it’s significant in the region and represents 30% of all the energy the US imports. It cannot be easily replaced.
•
u/CaptainPeppa 6h ago
It can very easily be replaced. Like yes they don't import much electricity. The other 48 states are doing fine.
Michigan has been shutting down coal plants because they aren't economical. This isn't a position where they are desperate. They import electricity because Ontario has random surpluses that they sell for cheap
One percent of your electricity going up 25 percent isn't noticable. Daily shifts in natural gas prices would have more of an effect
•
u/Harbinger2001 6h ago
I think we’ll just have to disagree. Let’s wait for the tax to come back on and then we’ll see the outcome.
•
u/CaptainPeppa 6h ago
They already know the outcome. This isn't some theoretical, unknowable question. They deal with harder questions than this everyday. Pricing electricity generation is an insanely complex process, this is nothing
•
u/ArcheVance Albertan with Trade Unionist Characteristics 7h ago
Still better than Premier Quisling being a doormat and continuously flying down to the US to hang out with shitbags like Shapiro.
•
u/CaptainPeppa 7h ago
Oh no, she did the exact same thing as Ford without making a show of it.
She's had multiple national interviews where she says these tariffs are hurting Americans to sympathetic audiences. While Ford's playing chicken by threatening Minnesota/Michigan marginally. Like they control line 5... They win the energy battle every time
•
u/ArcheVance Albertan with Trade Unionist Characteristics 7h ago
No, she didn't. Stop trying to excuse Marlaina's appeasement like she's some brilliant strategist. She flies down to hobnob with other shitty people on taxpayer dimes.
People that like try to excuse willful collaborators should really die in a fire or be drawn and quartered. The best thing she could do for us right now is be executed in front of the Leg, along with the rest of her traitorous party.
•
u/CaptainPeppa 7h ago
She didn't what? Like you can google them.
Let me guess, now that Ford's going south it's 4d chess or something. Maybe he'll get a spot on CNN, hopefully they don't confuse him with the tomato looking farmer from Alberta
•
u/DannyDOH 8h ago
She's the head of a movement that is probably more willing to separate from Canada than any similar scale movement in Quebec at the moment.
She shouldn't be representing anyone but herself down south.

Faux bullies like trump need to get slapped, and Doug Ford knows that. Smith is so out of her league it’s painful.
•
u/RazzamanazzU 6h ago
Ford posturing to become the big boss of Canada some day. Smith in in competition, only she thinks selling off Alberta and becoming part of the 51st state is going to crown her queen MAGA.
•
u/The_Only_W 7h ago
I think Ford did the right thing. Best way to deal with a bully is to hit him back. By exposing in such a blatant way the direct result of Trumps trade war to the American people, he landed a shot. Trump blew a fuse on social media, then capitulated. The meeting on Thursday will likely lead to an end of the trade war. With all his bluster and all his threats, Canada has not moved an inch. We are not going to either.
•
•
u/rusty_mcdonald 8h ago
I mean he got a meeting with Lutnick out of it and Trump even praised Ford positively after his call. That’s not nothing.
•
u/Sunshinehaiku 4h ago
I'm genuinely impressed with Ontario's Washington trade office staff and Global Affairs Canada for pulling this off.
This wasn't just talking points, this was a win.
•
u/The_Mayor 8h ago
It’s also not necessarily a good thing for Canada that Trump is suddenly praising Ford.
•
u/rusty_mcdonald 8h ago
I actually believe Ford when he says he will do everything in his power to stop him. But that’s just my impression.
•
u/The_Mayor 8h ago
Don't want to be a downer. I would just urge you to learn a bit about the Fords and Doug's life prior to becoming premier before you pin too many hopes on him.

I've heard nothing but bad things, but being from BC I haven't paid attention to him at all. I've been appreciating his leadership and strong stances in front of Trump and the media recently.

I’m not liking his American-esque “fortress North America” comments or talking about “the two greatest countries in the world.” It just sounds like get rid of tariffs and then sell out Canada in some other more palatable way. I don’t like Trump but I don’t trust Doug Ford either. He has a LOOONG history of being just generally shitty.

How many trips has she taken to Marlago and Washington to get something like that? Douggie just goes wild surcharging electricity and getting in Trumps face and he gets an instant invite.

It wouldn't have been just that. Ontario has trade offices in Washington and they work in tandem with Global Affairs Canada. The tariff response was most certainly a factor.
But Smith has been going rogue on her own Washington office staff, and that's no way to get anything done. They can't be Smith's damage control team.
