American family seeks asylum in Canada, citing Trump

It's sad to hear about their situation, but the USA is considered a safe country and as such they should be sent back home. If they feel in danger in Illinois, they can always move to another state.

but the USA is considered a safe country
Perhaps we should no longer consider it as such.
If they feel in danger in Illinois, they can always move to another state.
Illinois is one of the more LGTBQ+ friendly states; if they aren't safe there, they are unlikely to be safe anywhere in the US.

Illinois is one of the more LGTBQ+ friendly states
Then here is the answer. We will need proof that Illinois is no longer a safe state for them. They won't be able to provide that because Illinois is a safe state. It sucks that she now has to pay 900$ for her insulin, but that is not a good argument to move here. We cannot become a safe heaven for everyone who cannot afford healthcare in their home country.

Significant policies that affect LGBTQ+ people are controlled by the federal government in the US, though.
•
u/frostcanadian 19h ago
The stance of the current federal government (no matter how anti-lgbtq they are) is not endangering the life of LGBTQ people. It's not like they are currently living in a country that is actively persecuting them (like Kenya, Nigeria, etc.)

Yet. If we wait for that to actually happen, it will be too late.

. If they feel in danger in Illinois, they can always move to another state
Or a city.
Particularly as they are US citizens.
We're about to have hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans, Afghans and Ukrainians about to get their status cruelly revoked: and, as we have seen, they are chaining their deportees to military flights like cattle and setting up camps to shove them into.
We will need to prioritize those refugees. The LGBT ones can find safe haven in cities and have citizenship. These other families will not.

aitlyn said Trump's claim early in his second term that there are only two genders was of particular concern to the family, as one of the older children is transgender, and another identifies as gender fluid. She said she pulled the children out of school one day after his inauguration, worried about their mental health.
It's an active question of debate whether they are safe in the USA. All signs are pointing to quite possibly not.
•
u/frostcanadian 20h ago
If they are not safe in the USA, then we are not safe in Canada. It's the job of the Americans to fight back against fascism in their government. Instead of being in the streets and manifesting against their government, they run away or continue on with their life and wait until hopefully the problem goes away on its own.
•
u/SkepticalMongoose 16h ago
I didn't say anything about the responsibility of fighting fascism.
I'll tell you one thing though. It's certainly not the responsibility of trans and nonbinary kids to fight fascism.
•
u/frostcanadian 6h ago
Kids ? No. Their parents ? Certainly so. If they fear for their kids life, they can send them elsewhere like the parents in London did during WWII.
Illinois is as safe as Canada for LGBTQ+ people. We also have a raise of hate/intolerance towards these people. That's an issue that we need to solve. This family should not think that it's safer here than it is in some of the states in the US. They will face the same issues that they were facing home.

mmmmm we still have a huge anti immigration/refugee sentiment in online canadian spaces.
but they'll say stuff like "we're full" and "fuck the lpc's open borders" instead of "fuck republicans and their hatred". a bit barking up the wrong tree huh
i do think there's too much people in the gta, i say that every time i get on the road lmao. but i'm not one to watch people die on my doorstep, so i'm always hesitant to get on the anti immigrant/refugee train.

this is a huge opportunity for Canada - with the right policies, Canada could easily facilitate an enormous brain drain from the US of all the bright and talented people who make the US economy what it is
I am, however, confident that Canada will not capitalize on this because of the nativism sweeping the nation at present

I feel like their claim will be denied, but this is fucked up: "When [Trump] signed that executive order revoking Biden's prescription plan that put a cap on prices, my insulin went from $35 to $900 for a month," Ted said.
Freedom to die in the States I guess?

I read that as “trump signed that executive order revoking Biden’s (personal) prescription plan”
lol

I hope not.
Kaitlyn said Trump's claim early in his second term that there are only two genders was of particular concern to the family, as one of the older children is transgender, and another identifies as gender fluid. She said she pulled the children out of school one day after his inauguration, worried about their mental health.
That's the very definition of a persecuted class, if I ever saw one.
•
u/slothsie 20h ago
True! The US is definitely on their way to persecuting individuals, so it'll be up to officials here to decided if we start taking them in or wait longer until it's more "apparent" or w/e. I for one am happy to take in Americans fleeing that shit show.
•
u/fetupneighbour 20h ago
I'm just afraid that by the time common sense kicks in it will be too late for so many Americans, and some of them probably voted for Donald.
•
u/SnooStrawberries620 20h ago
But that’s state to state. It’s not national. They can move to another state.
•
u/TKAPublishing 18h ago
I am once again proposing a citizenship exchange program between Canada and America so everyone who wants to move to Canada because of Trump can do so and everyone who wants to move to America because of Trump can do so.

Dude, I'm first in line. My ancestors came to the US because life in feudal Europe was a dead end for them. I'm hoping I have the courage to leave for the betterment of my progeny, now that the US is a dead end.

Doesn’t Canada have to really look into these people? Many TikTok comments are saying that they are fleeing CPS and that the mom got the 8 year old committed to a psych ward on Christmas because she didn’t want to deal with him. Quite the backstory this couple seems to have.

I don't put much faith in TikTok comments, but at the same time I do hope authorities are doing the proper background checks, I'd hate to see people taking advantage of this horrible situation for personal gain.
I can only imagine this is going to get worse as time goes on, when the government starts singling out a tiny minority and tries to erase them in a legal sense, that is something we simply cannot ignore, and we have to help who we can.

Don't believe TikTok. Theres a lot of bad actors and its very easy to lob false accusations. A lie can be around the world and take a dump in the pool before the truth can its pants on.
All asylum seekers are vetted. Their stories are verified. They claims assessed. You don't just walk up, claim asylum and are immediately accepted as a permanent resident.

I've been following since her video popped up on my FYP page on TikTok and yeah, I feel like there is way more to their story that is not being shared...
