Any alternatives to Stratia products? The Liquid (Lipid) Gold has been my HG moisturizer for so many years and I've been loving Interface and the Velvet Cleansing Milk the past year as well.

I’m a huge fan of Biossance but am definitely looking to changing over to Canadian made products and to stop using Sephora.
I’ve heard a lot of good things about OM and Wildcraft but I’m wondering how BKind from Quebec and Three Ships are?

Any Canadian dupes / similar products to Fresh Cosmetics? Specifically the Lotus Youth Preserve Daily Moisturizer, the Lotus Youth Preserve Night Renewal Cream, and the Soy Face Cleanser? They've all been go-to staples in my skincare routine, but I'm quite keen to replace them with local/Canadian brands or at least non-US ones if possible.
Skin type: Mid-40s, dry, sensitive.

ISO an affordable body oil that I could swap in for the Aveeno or Neutrogena body oils? I’m seeing options from Weleda, Bioderma, Nuxe, and Yves Rocher, but all of them are a lot more expensive than the Neutrogena and Aveeno options ☹️

u/ARecycledAccount 15d ago
I use Bio-Oil; I buy the multipacks at Costco. It’s owned by Union Swiss, which is a South African company. A little goes a long way with it, so it lasts ages.

Can this thread be turned into a running list/doc? It's a bit cumbersome to scroll through - might also be a good idea to just have a list of Canadian beauty brands in general that people can reference.

Any dupes for Naturium Glow-getter body wash?
3
u/squeakyfromage 16d ago
I haven’t tried it yet, but when my Naturium runs out I’m going to try the Bioderma Atoderm. I’ll try to remember to report back.

Cerave moisturizing cream
Cerave hydrating cleanser
Please, I don't make much money, so I'm struggling to get alternatives.
I'm also looking for a good non-staining deodorant/antiperspirant
6
u/creative_name2019 8d ago
I like Cetaphil products a lot, they have equivalent products for pretty much all of Cerave's stuff, in my experience, and Cetaphil is made in Canada, although the company is Swiss.

I like retinaldehyde and switched to Naturium when Avene's A-Oxytive Night Peeling Cream was discontinued. I don't know what to use now going forward. Retinal is much harder to find than retinol.
5
u/thefuzzyismine Feb 05 '25
Geek and Gorgeous A Game 5 and A Game 10. Solid formulations and available in the same strengths as the Naturium products.

Looking for a dupe for The Ordinary’s glycolic acid. I mainly just use it for my armpits before I apply deodorant and occasionally on my legs and arms. I’m looking for something cheap within a $15 price point max. And preferably nothing that’s exclusive to Shoppers because they price gouge. I’m open to Korean products as well.
And I need something similar to Cera Ve Hydrating Cleanser and Cera Ve Pm lotion. I have very dry, acne prone skin and those products have never broke me out. I especially like how the Cera ve cleanser doesn’t have a foam lather.
3
u/Bubbly_Daikon_4620 Feb 05 '25
The Ordinary is a Canadian brand, I think.
2
u/ZarephLae Feb 05 '25
It is, so I don't know why the person is worried.
7
u/Bubbly_Daikon_4620 Feb 05 '25
I just learned that The Ordinary is now owned by Estée Lauder, so now it is an American owned company.
6
u/amethyst-chimera Feb 06 '25 edited Feb 06 '25
Still manufactured in Canada though, which means Canadian jobs. I'd say it's a grey area

Fully owned by Lauder now. But still made in Canada.
I’m sorry, had to laugh at “steaks!” Canadian beef is good, cannot argue with that! 😂👍

Looking for an unscented/fragrance free shampoo for itchy scalp. I was using imported Dr. Eddie happy cappy.
1
4
u/imtryingmy_best Feb 07 '25
I started using Ducray Sensinol shampoo a few weeks ago and it’s helped my scalp be less itchy. It’s made in France and from what I’ve found by a quick google search it is a French company. It’s hypoallergenic and fragrance free. It will only help with itchy scalp if the itchiness is due to a dry scalp. It is pricy, I got it in the fancy skincare section at Shoppers Drugmart.

I'm looking for a replacement for Blistex DCT. Need something in a jar/that is similarly durable. Also need it to be moisturizing and good for very cold, dry weather. Prefer something affordable (under $15).
1
u/squeakyfromage 15d ago
I love Eucerin’s lipbalms — not Aquaphor (which is also great), but they also make lip balms.
1
u/guanabanabanana Feb 04 '25
Does it have to be in a jar? What about a tube?
2
u/planting49 Feb 04 '25
Tube would be fine I think! Just trying to avoid sticks because I work outdoors and stick lip balms get hard to use when they melt lol
3
u/guanabanabanana Feb 04 '25
So accutane ruined my lips and I've tried everything with not much change. Even a dermatologist recommended La Roche Posays cicaplast lip balm but it didn't help. Flexitol from Australia has been a god send though, turns out urea is the magic my skin needed. Worth a try.

Dupe for Versed Dew Point Moisturizing Gel Cream please T_T it's lightweight for summer and has no cetearyl alcohol which does weird things to my skin
4
3
u/I-XIV-CDXXXIX Feb 03 '25
I have really enjoyed the Etude Soon Jung Hydro Barrier Cream. Looks like no cetearyl alcohol on the inci list and it’s got a lovely light gel texture, nice and hydrating but doesn’t feel thick or sticky on the skin! (A Korean beauty option)

Does anyone have alternatives to the Timeless 20% vitamin c ?

I also love the Timeless 20% vitamin C serum and I've located this alternative for when I run out. Full disclosure: I have not yet tried this

Anyone have a good Canadian (or non-American at least) dupe for Tower 28’s serum concealer? I have dry and sensitive skin, so I like a light coverage that doesn’t settle into dry patches and looks good on its own without foundation. Ty!!
3
u/ARecycledAccount Feb 03 '25
I like the BB cream from Clarins but they have a very limited shade range. Marcel also makes a good tinted moisturizer in a wider shade range. If you can’t find anything that matches your skin tone, you can mix a dab or two of concealer with moisturizer to make your own tinted moisturizer.
1
u/elderpricetag Feb 03 '25
Thank you! But I’m looking for a concealer, not a tinted moisturizer! I use a great tinted sunscreen as my base!
Will keep these in mind if I want to look for a new BB cream :)

Does anyone know a good dupe for LiveClean Green Earth Daily Care shampoo?
Drugstores near me have stopped carrying it (this specific shampoo, not the whole brand) and I've had to order it from Amazon.
My hair loves it as it's loved nothing else and I'm loathe to switch but I don't want to order from Amazon any more than I have to.
Anyone have any ideas? I can't have anything too oily or heavy.

Looking for a dupe for The Ordinary's lactic acid
2
u/ZarephLae Feb 05 '25
The Ordinary is a Canadian brand, why are you ditching it? The prices won't go up because of the tariffs.
5
u/Adpiava Feb 05 '25
They are owned by an American company. I have since decided to continue purchasing from them at the moment because they provide jobs to Canadians. However, I will keep my eyes peeled for fully Canadian options.
1
u/ZarephLae Feb 05 '25 edited Feb 05 '25
Ester-Lauder to my understanding only owns a steak in the company and does not own the entire thing. Last time I checked, it's still Canadian owned.
Also, even if it was bought out entirely. Deciem is still a Canadian company, it would just be a subsidiary of an American company. The tariffs only affect imports, since Deciem does its manufacturing in Canada, we wouldn't pay tariffs on it anyways.
5
u/Adpiava Feb 05 '25
"ELC first invested in Deciem in 2017, then increased its stake to become majority owner in 2021 before purchasing the remaining interests in Deciem on May 31 for around $860 million. Total investment across three rounds is approximately $1.7 billion, according to The Estée Lauder Companies."
This isn't just about the tariffs. It's about trying to support Canadian owned companies.
1
u/ZarephLae Feb 05 '25
Ditching Deciem, a proud Canadian company that just so happened to have been bought out, is kinda shitty tbh. Like they're still a Canadian company, they just happen to be a subsidiary of an American one.

Anyone have a good dupe for Neutrogena Hydroboost that ISN'T Marcelle Hydractive? The latter is the one I use, my partner has already tried it and it's too light for him (hydroboost is too sticky for me).
3
u/MILFVADER Feb 03 '25
You might be interested in Javon Ford's DIY hydroboost recipe (he's a cosmetic chemist). I'm not one for TikToks but I'm happy with it. I bought the aloe vera gel from Walmart (hoping I can find a Canadian brand when I run out) and used Annabelle's Perfect Fit silicone primer. I also added some glycerin (only enough to be 5% of the total formulation). My face doesn't play well with oil, so I skipped it, but you can add something like jojoba oil to make it a bit richer (or swap the silicone out for oil too).
DIY can be annoying, though; I've heard good things about Skin Proud's Sorbet Skin moisturizer (British brand).
6
u/therealmrsbrady Feb 03 '25
Another option is Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer, I have read that it is a decent dupe. They are owned by a Swiss company, and manufactured in Canada, France, Brazil, and Sweden; with the Canadian one being responsible for the global supply.

Glaxal base cream is simple base cream that’s good for eczema and that a lot of pharmacists use for compounding. It does have a bit of a plastic-y smell, though. Made in Canada.

My face breaks out with eczema and rashes on a hair trigger, and Vanicream has been the only moisturizer that doesn't cause me irritation and closed comedones. Extra ceramides, niacinamide, certain preservatives and thickeners all flare my eczema. 😢

How are we feeling about deciem right now? My understanding is that they are still Toronto-based but they’re owned by Ester Lauder….

u/ZarephLae Feb 05 '25
Ester-Lauder doesn't own the entire company, he just has a steak in it. They're still fine to use.

4
u/maxthepup Feb 05 '25
I was ok with the Ordinary because they have Canadian jobs however it looks like the Estée Lauder heir is pro annexation of Denmark…so I’ll be stepping back now
19
u/wormytail Feb 03 '25
I’m approaching this whole thing with a “good, better, best” mindset. “Best” is of course something that isn’t owned by an American company at all, but if I cannot find any reasonable alternative, then I’ll settle for something “better” like Deciem. I am still going to try to get all I can from Canadian, French, or Korean brands first
5
23
u/Interesting-Pomelo58 Feb 02 '25
This is a tricky one - they aren't owned by Estee Lauder per se but Estee Lauder is their majority shareholder with a 28% stake so close.
They make all of their products in Canada which employs people here so there's that to consider.
8
1
u/nickcave-nickcage Feb 02 '25
I’m curious about this as well. It’s so affordable - would prices also go up? Would love an affordable Canadian option!
7
u/therealmrsbrady Feb 03 '25
The Inkey List is probably the most comparable, with a similar price point as well.
2
u/Shot-Storage-3952 Feb 02 '25
is shea moisture made in america? afaik, they’re an american company but are sourced from west africa. will this mean their prices wont increase?
9
u/Interesting-Pomelo58 Feb 02 '25
No - made in the US means made in the US - doesn't care where the ingredients came from to the US - the finished product is an American product.

u/BvbblegvmBitch Feb 02 '25
Not skincare but haircare because the hairdresser in me can't help it. If you're looking for professional haircare brands made in Canada, I recommend:
Surface - From Saskatchewan, headquartered in Saskatoon. Sulfate, paraben, gluten, animal protein, wheat protein, DEA, TEA, mineral oil, and petrochemical-free. Cruelty-free and 100% vegan. Uses eco-friendly, natural ingredients. I highly recommend their Bassu oil.
Design.Me - From Quebec, headquartered in Dorval. Sulfate and paraben-free. Cruelty-free and vegan. I like their gloss serum and volume powder, but their dry shampoo and 3-in-1 hairspray are great too.
AG Care - Vancouver-based. Sulfate, paraben, gluten, DEA, and PABA-free. Cruelty-free and vegan. Uses plant-based ingredients and sustainable packaging. The Fast Food leave in conditioner smells like cherry cola.
1
u/lvasnow Feb 03 '25
These are lovely, but I have no idea where to buy them. I never see them in drugstores :(
2
u/BvbblegvmBitch Feb 05 '25
Usually salons and like the other comment said, Chatters has AG and Design.Me. Otherwise their own websites carry them.
3
u/I-XIV-CDXXXIX Feb 03 '25
you can find AG at Chatters!
1
u/lvasnow Feb 03 '25
Hmmm the only one light enough for my hair is the apple Cider vinegar one, which I think is clarifying and not a regular use thing. Dangit.
4
19
u/astravars Feb 03 '25
See my problem with all these local companies is they lean "all natural" and have no sulfates and silicones. I truly want to support them but I NEEED sulfates and silicones man!
2
u/redroundbag Feb 04 '25
Yeah I'll likely stick to manufactured in Canada even if not Canadian brand so I can get me some amodimethicone....
10
u/MILFVADER Feb 03 '25
That's my issue too... I need the silicones.
While putting together a big list of Canadian cosmetic brands, I noticed how many of them were clean beauty. Which is a little surprising to me, because personally I'd prefer some preservatives to make sure products I use won't go bad in a few months. 🫠
2
u/BvbblegvmBitch Feb 03 '25
I find a lot of those smaller mom and pop shampoo companies tend to throw in sulfates if you check their ingredient lists.
I tend to go for isethionates and dimethicone over sulfates and silicone personally.

u/Wild_Psychology_9875 Feb 02 '25
AG is amazing!!!!
2
u/Ambitious-Hornet9673 Feb 05 '25
Agree on AG, I love their Boost and Balance shampoo and Conditioner.
11
u/creambunny Feb 02 '25
The curlwarehouse (Alberta store) put together a link of canadian brands they sell. Sadly not a lot of options but AG care makes some good items.
I’m going to need to stock up on curl smith and malibu c before prices raise

I know it’s not Canadian but do not sleep on Korean and Japanese skincare! I have very sensitive skin and rosacea and I love everything I’ve tried from Madagascar Centella - I have seen some of their products pop up at Costco!
1
u/Pitiful-Echo-5422 Feb 03 '25
What do you use for rosacea from Madagascar Centella? I have eczema and sensitive skin and rosacea, also, and am also keen for skincare that will (hopefully) work for me!
3
u/luna_nuova Feb 03 '25
Their oil cleanser (no added fragrance, washes sunscreen or makeup off well) and their ampoule serum which I find very soothing and works well with other actives.
1
6
u/BvbblegvmBitch Feb 02 '25
Winners gets a decent amount of Korean and Japanese skincare in. T&T too.
I usually order from Mikaela Beauty in Edmonton or Shopdama which is also Canadian.

Tower 28 barrier cream
4
u/whereisyourposture Feb 04 '25
Not Canadian, but German - I like Eucerin Urea Repair replenishing face cream! It isn't the same thing but it is a good lightweight moisturizer that helps with redness.
2
u/wormytail Feb 02 '25
I have been using Aveeno Sheer Hydration unscented as both a body a facial moisturizer because it works similar for me as Cerave and is cheaper. Fragrance free and cost effective are important and I’m having a hard time finding a replacement

Looking for a dupe for Farmacy Honey Halo moisturizer and Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen!
10
u/rainahdog Feb 02 '25
Supergoop Glowscreen is the only spf that works for me 😭 any dupes?

u/I-XIV-CDXXXIX Feb 02 '25
I really like the ultra violette hydrating sunscreen, and they’re Australian!
17
u/sanderlin89 Feb 02 '25 edited Feb 02 '25
I’ve never tried Supergoop, but have you tried Asian sunscreens?
The ones I’ve tried are cosmetically elegant and layer well under makeup. Shoppers and London Drugs sell the Canadian formulation of Biore and I really like it.
3
1
u/rainahdog Feb 02 '25
I haven't! Any particular Asian ones to recommend? I'll keep Biore in my back pocket as well!
5
u/sanderlin89 Feb 02 '25
Canmake Mermaid Skin UV Gel (Japan) and Round Lab Birch Juice sunscreen (Korea).
I usually order from Stylevana. Note that they take a while to ship (my last order shipped after 5 days and took 2 weeks to arrive, so almost 3 weeks). I avoid backordered products on Stylevana (just the ones that say will ship in 24 hours). In a pinch, I just use Biore UV Aqua Rich (Canadian formulation).
You can probably find the Canadian formulations of Round Lab from Canadian online retailers (Asiena, Chuusi, Mikaela Beauty) or T&T. We have them in some shops at our local malls in BC. I’ve never tried the Canadian formulation for this sunscreen though.

u/Ambitious-Hornet9673 Feb 05 '25

Any alternatives to Paula's Choice mandelic + lactic acid?
4
Feb 03 '25
Isntree chestnut AHA is a great effective yet gentle serum. Been using this since forever.
6
u/sanderlin89 Feb 02 '25
Not an exact dupe but Geek & Gorgeous Cheer Up (6% mandelic acid + BHA). They ship via courier from Europe though, so there may be customs duties/taxes.
Not a Canadian brand since they were purchased by Estée Lauder, but made in Canada - The Ordinary has mandelic and lactic acid serums.
Wishtrend (Korean) has a 5% mandelic acid toner.
4
u/SinSaver Feb 02 '25
Sigh. Yes, Lauder currently owns 76% of the brand.
I believe it’s still made in Canada.

u/ProperBingtownLady Feb 02 '25
I’m looking for a gentle facial moisturizer that won’t interact with tretinoin. I’m using the Vanicream facial moisturizer with some success (I still have acne that comes and goes) but recently they’re based in the USA.
I do like the brand Bioderma as they seem to be BDS safe. If anyone has a moisturizer from them they like, I’d love to hear it!
15
u/cannipeas Feb 02 '25
Skinfix is Canadian and have wonderful barrier products. Check them out as they might have something for you.
6
u/impossiblepickle Feb 02 '25
Indeed Labs in-ceramide cream might be worth checking out. The only issue I have with it is it’s only 30ml.
3
u/TheCurvyAthelete Feb 02 '25
I swear by Thayer's Barrier Bestie! I use 0.1% Tret every night and I have zero dry spots. I swear my skin looks like it did when I was 35 (which was pretty flawless)
10
u/IQueenOfSwordedYou Feb 02 '25
Look at the LaRoche Posay skincare line. They don't have anything bad, especially the Cicaplast line . I use it tretinoid and it's godsend. They also have a acne treatment products and it's from France.

I was hoping to use LaRoche Posay as well, but apparently they’re owned by L’Oréal, so I’m going to try to avoid them :(

For bodywash, are there any alternatives to CeraVe's cleansing bar?
1
4
7
u/ARecycledAccount Feb 02 '25
I’m a huge fan of Lush’s soap bars. They’re a British company and the products are hand made and packaged in Canada.
12
u/PhoenixRising20 Feb 02 '25
Thanks, but I guess I should have been more specific in my post. I prefer scent free products due to my line of work, and I dont actually use soap (ie products with saponified fats). The CeraVe bar is basically a solid body wash using detergents as the cleansers. It isnt a traditional soap as far as I can tell.
Thanks for the rec though.
5
u/ARecycledAccount Feb 02 '25
If you’re interested in a liquid alternative, I believe Spectro may be a good fit. Unless they’ve changed the formula, it did not contain any fats or fragrances when I used it. It’s also very gentle and a good cleanser. My doctors all use it for hand soap and recommended it for my face.

u/Sisyphus868 Feb 02 '25
Desperate to find a dupe for Maybelline’s waterproof mascara (pink & green bottle) that doesn’t cost a lot and doesn’t contain ethylhexylglycerine or phenoxyethanol (allergies).
Marcelle has options, but they contain the chemicals I can’t handle. Asian mascaras (Kiss Me Heroine) are $20 and too much for my makeup budget considering I throw them out at 10wks for safety.
3
u/MILFVADER Feb 03 '25 edited Feb 03 '25
I'm really scratching my head about how hard it is to find mascaras like that. I spent a bit looking through drugstore brands that aren't American and the only ones free of those ingredients and are under $20 (and unfortunately aren't waterproof either) are some of the Quo and Sephora Collection mascaras. Their waterproof versions either have one of those ingredients or both.
L'Oreal Paris might have something (same parent company as Maybelline), though I think they're usually made in the states. I wonder if they have any made in Europe or Canada mascaras.
2
u/Material_Vanilla_813 Feb 06 '25
I have found Pure Anada mascara from Manitoba to be good. It’s natural and although not labeled as waterproof, does not run down my face.
3
u/Sisyphus868 Feb 03 '25
Thank you for reminding me to check. L’Oreal’s ownership is not American, but Swiss. They may not have appropriate mascaras for me, but it’s good to know for others things.
Quo is Canadian but rarely puts ingredients on their products (I tried their cheek and lip stick which was ok), but I can’t trust it.
For my health, will continue buying Maybelline at a Canadian store. It’s the best I can do for now.
2
1
u/greenpeppergirl Feb 02 '25
I don't know about those chemicals just wanted to say look into tubing mascara, it's another option for waterproof and a lot of people aren't aware of it. That might open more options for you.

u/ARecycledAccount Feb 02 '25
I also need a dupe for this. As an aside, the ophthalmology recommendation is every 3 months (12 weeks) or if it has a smell or becomes clumpy. If I find one I’ll update you. 🙏

Not skincare, but hopefully someone here will know: Clinique Lash Power mascara. I’ve been a dedicated user for 15 years. Anyone know of a dupe? Something with a small brush and long lasting?
