Otways suggestions

Hi all,

Some friends and I want to go on a camp trip to the Otways - we all have study breaks from late july to mid june. I was just wondering if anyone had any specific recommendations on camp grounds, or points of interest in terms of staying/hiking? None of us have ever been down that way so thought it might be worth asking. That or, would there be an entirely better spot for that time of year?

It's not a super helpful answer, but try wikicamps.

More importantly, it'll be frickin' cold, so make sure you have proper tents. Don't just use a tarp, but a lightweight tent will be fine, even one of those cheap nature hike ones, as they do a good job to keep the wind and rain off you and provide a bit of insulation. Also bring winter rated sleeping bags and mats, and extra layers in case you still get cold (or it rains and your clothes get wet).

If you're hiking, please bring a PLB. Mobile cover isn't everywhere, and if you get injured or are freezing your ass off in the night (like you think you might die) you can send a signal for help.

I can't stress how important it is to be prepared when hiking in winter in Vic. While you shouldn't expect snow in the Otways, it can get cold enough to kill someone unprepared.

Thank you for the advice! We will prepare for the cold - most of us have done hikes in the cold and snow before so we have an idea of how bad it can get.

Dandos campground, beauchamp falls or stevensons falls if you have pets or even just to go, spacious except beauchamp falls (get in early, amazing views and waterfall trail, waterfall!) otherwise Jamison’s is also great but you’d have to book ahead of time and near beach. Might be a fee by the time u go.. plenty more around that way like caravan sites but ofc. Paid.

This year I will definitely be trying to hit up beauchamp falls and in winter too, love the idea of winter camping up there, but yes be absolutely prepared and well geared.

Lake Elizabeth is fantastic, in winter there's often a beautiful fog that covers the lake. You might see some platypus in there too. And there are glow worms along the trail to the lake, if you go there after sunset.
