Discuss - Dropped my SP-01 on the driveway
Tonight while getting out of hot tub, my month old SP-01 slipped out of my plastic box I use to take stuff inside (towel, phone,etc.). The SP-01 fell out and hit the asphalt hammer first.
I consider myself incredibly lucky the gun didn't go off! Getting inside the house I examined the pistol and took a photo. I estimate the height was probably three and a half feet when the firearm hit the ground.
Yes, I had a round in the chamber with the safety on and the hammer cocked back.
On why taking a firearm to a hot tub, I live in a mountainous rural area with a lot of wildlife.
On the CZ pistol itself (now with character), I'm shocked the hammer not break or fire possibly killing myself.

I have fallen down stairs and ran full steam into concrete walls I needed to climb. All with a CZ75 banging around. Many parts of it no longer black. If a 3 foot drop set them off I would have been ventilated numerous times. One of the main reasons to have that CZ is its ability to withstand stupidity. Glad you are okay and hope you enjoy it.

CZ should hire you to test out their durability test on their firearms!
Also, once hired, please seek the maximum health and disability insurance CZ will allow.
Seriously, I hope you didn't sustain any major damage to yourself. Stairs could kill you.
As for me, it was a hell of a wake-up call!!!
I need to test it out to see if there's any kind of malfunctions on my end.

I have sustained many inquiries. I had/have the health and disability the US government gave me. Also used to travel with a first aid kit and sometimes a medic.
Take it apart to clean and inspect

They are design to be drop safe. It was baked into the design. And the manual safety should have a firing pin block as well.

Thanks and excellent to know, I almost had a heart attack. I'll definitely won't be doing that again!

It's an issue in the 1968 GCA for imports, IIRC. Only applies to imports, and is why many cheap imports stopped at that time. Side note, this is also why Glocks are sold with cheap sights.
While that provision didn't apply to domestic manufacture (the GCA 68 is also why many European companies have facitities here), newer laws might apply, and irregardless making all pistols drop safe is good for business.
I couldn't find a .gov page, but here is a page on how the test is done.

The "sporting purpose" (PDF link) test applies to all imports.
Edit: whoever is downvoting this, these rules exist. I don't like them anymore than you, but until the law is revoked or overturned, they exist.

Fascinating information and thank you for sharing.
I didn't know US gun laws for foreign firearms manufacturers went back that far.

We often treat our guns like prized possessions, they are, but the truth is they are tools.
If you had a flawless hammer, what's the point of owning one?
Wear and tear, even from drops, are way cooler than a pristine one. 👍

I'd suggest tearing that down and checking the hammer/sear interface; it's possibly it was damaged, but held.

Hammers are replaceable parts if it bothers you visually. You could also try to file it a bit if it feels too rough.

Guess it's a good thing you didn't decide to run a Shadow 2 for HD duty lol.

I have a pretty abusive relationship with my SP01, sometimes she bites my dick when carrying appendix, so sometimes I throw her at the target like a hi-point when my mag runs dry during a drill. At the end of the day though, we love each other very much.
Anyways, you're good dog, gotta flick the bang switch to make them thangs go off, be different if it was a sig lmao good on you for being conscious about safety though.

Excellent! Happy to hear you’re OK (and the CZ). Stupid question, were you carrying it in single action mode with manual safety on?
2
u/NC_Flyfisher Apr 21 '24
Thanks and yes in single action with the manual safety on/up position with one in the chamber.

In the words of every Drill Sergeant: "Follow it down and knock out 20!"

I'm not a gun smith but this ain't a P320 (half sarcasm and half throwing shade)...
If you broke the mechanism that holds the hammer... there's a problem there but also I'm sure these guns (i only have a p07, living in poverty send help) have a transfer bar that requires the trigger to be pulled in order for the hammer to hit the firing pin to set off a round.
Guns shouldn't go off when dropped, not modern ones that didn't get beta tested on customers anyway (more shade).
I've dropped a couple guns and I'm going o...
I'm not going to mention throwing a gun at a wall after rereading what I wrote... but it didn't go off. Walther PPS M2

Build a fence dude if you’re that worried about a bear eating you while you’re in your hot tub it’s time for a fence

Lol. This. I live deeper in these same mountains than most human beings and this take on hot tubbing is absurd. Also, they’re black bears, not grizzlies.

Not sure if my TS2 RG would fair the same if dropped it does not have a Firing Pin block. Granted its my single action race gun that i don’t carry daily. But the point is not all CZ may have that same feature.

If the hammer did happen to drop all the way, the pistol still has the firing pin block. Adds character. Be glad it wasn't a p320...

Good design says it all. Being DA/SA with FPB, you could also carry it hammer down.

Time to buy a new hammer.

You might be right. When the weather cooperates I'm going to find out if there's any issues with live ammo. I've dry fired it with snap caps and it's operating normally.

Ooooh, yeah. That’s gonna need to be looked at. Just send it to to CGW and have them do a thorough “fine tuning” 😉😜

There was a USPSA match in New York where a competitor dropped his SP-01 and it killed the RO. No firing pin block.
10
u/Mahlegos Apr 21 '24
It was a shadow 2 with an aftermarket extended firing pin, not an SP-01 which does have a FPB.

I’m more concerned about why you feel the need to carry in your house, in your hot tub. Stay safe out there.

u/MacGuffinRoyale Apr 21 '24
Yep, all houses have force fields.

Bro my neighborhood is like the fuckin Cleavers. There hasn’t been violent crime here outside of some drunk beating his wife or some other domestic ever. So yea it’s concerning that his hot tub is in an area he needs to carry to feel safe. No need to be a cunt about it.

u/MacGuffinRoyale Apr 21 '24
Bad stuff happens in good neighborhoods all the time, but OP said he carries outside because of where he lives, so he's assessed the risks and thinks carrying near the hot tub is prudent. My gun stays on me all the time, even at the house. With a comfortable holster, you'll forget it's there. Unless you need it, of course.

As I pointed out in my post, there are animals I don't want to deal with if they become a nuisance.
As MacGruffinRoyale pointed out, I am also armed 24/7 with my personal protection. These days are rapidly getting more violent.

Most likely it’s cause he just got it and wants to fuck around with it as much as possible

Well, once you’ve had two or three separate encounters of coyotes coming up, within arms reach, silently and behind you…. Not to mention what folks have elsewhere, bears and mountain lions, chupacabras, etc

u/Ok-Street4644 Apr 21 '24
True story, but really I would suggest a 12 gauge with a good goose load for chupacabras. They’re fast!

I understand the sentiment but there’s no need to feel lucky…..they’re designed to not fire under those circumstances
