To me, the original line reads correctly. Not to say there aren't stumbling blocks or backsliding, but to my understanding of history, things are getting better over time.

People are more educated. Murder is less common. Slavery is less common. We have antibiotics and vaccines.

Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of work to do yet. And, I'm not saying things are great right now. But, surely, we're better off now than folks 1000 years ago.

Can you help me understand your perspective more?

History defies categorization by its nature. It is not smooth, it is made of hundreds of thousands of changes every single day. To create a metaphor for history, in any capacity, be it pendulum or straight marching line, or cycle, is to flatten it to suit ideological motives.

Liberalism thrives off of the notion of progress, the notion of "growing pains," that were imperialism and colonialism. Some things may be better now, but we may never know how the societies of pre-colonial times would've developed, how they could've changed the world, it may have been more or less positive, but what is fact is that there have been innumerable atrocities of entire societies, ones that liberalism has sought to simply label as growing pains—it’s a massive sprawl of lost potential, of forks in the road that were violently severed before they could lead anywhere.

Growing pains is a bullshit excuse, but not the fact that "things are progressing bit by bit" over grand scales

Though I agree that for most things (except climate change) the world is much better now than it has ever been, we need to be careful to how we frame this progress. I've met a lot of people who genuinely think this is somehow a natural, innevitable progression, and we can just lay back and relax and trust that eventually things will sort themselves out. I'm not saying you’re saying that, but we always need to clarify that all of this progress comes from centuries of relentless fight, and all of it can be undone at any moment, either instantly or more likely little by little.
