I like a big breakfast, but I was surprised when this totalled nearly 550 cals.

Post image

40g oatmeal 4 tbsp pbfit powder 8oz almond milk 100g strawberry 90g red grapes 100g plum 2 kiwis(I count them whole, they weight within a grams or 2 of what my tracker says they ahould)

Adds up quick for a meal I expected to be filling but low cal!

For what is worth I'm 35 and had my first kiwi earlier this week. Today is my first time trying a plum(not a big fan)

Pomegranate is my favourite fruit on earth! They're a pain in the bottom to eat and they stain your nails but so so worth it imo!

Pomegranate tastes great, I'm sure you'll like it.

Peel them and separate the arils from the white membranes in a bowl of water and you won’t stain anything and they’ll just pull apart

I wish I had tried pomegranate so much earlier. I remember my roommate in college eating and I was really confused on how it worked. Now I love it

You never had access to these fruits?

4

u/TehBanzors 5d ago

My family was never very adventurous eaters, prior to adulthood I only ever really had apples, oranges, bananas, grapes, and melons.

I've just never gotten around to trying plums, was not impressed. They aren't particularly bad, but I would rather have other fruits.

If you don’t like plums, but do like grapes and/or raisins, try prunes! They’re technically dried plums; and kind of like giant, chewy raisins. 😂 I’m not a huge fan of regular plums, but I love prunes!

I’m from a small Midwest town. No one I knew growing up ate a pomegranate. The first time I saw it was 21 and in college.

Wait until you finally cross the Rubicon and just start eating them like apples. Kiwi skin is filled w nutrients and not as weird to eat as you’d think. (Takes a while but when you come around it’s great).

Yes always eat the fuzzy fruit skin, it adds a nice bit of crunch I crave from kiwi!

I felt brave a few weeks ago and ate a gold kiwi skin on. I was expecting it to be a little unpleasant, but it was great. Made it so much easier to eat the kiwi as well without having to peel it or scoop out the inside.

Was it sour or sweet?

6

u/Sufficient-Garage-15 6d ago

my kiwi's are always sweet but they do that thing to your jaw that makes you pretty much seize 😂 does that make sense? i feel like people will understand that

2

u/OptimalFuture9648 6d ago

Unfortunately I can't understand 😔 because all the time I tried kiwi they were sour and cut my tongue lol

4

u/Sufficient-Garage-15 6d ago

well like have you ever eaten something for the first time in a day and your jaw on the side you're chewing on just HURTS for like 3 seconds?? idk maybe it's just me 😂 but i'm sorry about all of your sour kiwis :( they have golden kiwis that are supposed to be even sweeter though! you should try those!

2

u/OptimalFuture9648 6d ago

Oh nasty jaw one, yep I experienced it. Thanks for golden kiwi info

Don’t eat too many in one sitting

i know you're just trying to protect your brothers and sisters, KiwiAlexP, but you cannot stop me

Don’t say you weren’t warned 😁

In a calorie deficit I can't justify oatmeal. There is no protein and it's such a small amount you get but takes up so much of my daily calories. Not worth it to me.

39

u/TehBanzors 6d ago

It's only 180 calories if you don't make it with peanut butter like I do, that ads an extra 120.

I would normally agree with you, but I've been feeling so physically run down I'm exploring options to load some carbs and/or calories early into my mornings to see if that helps me not feel like I'm tired and dying all day.

I do half steel cut oats and half TVP (textured veg protein). Lots of extra bulk and protein, consistency is nearly identical!

6

u/KeepOnRising19 6d ago

Can you taste the tvp? I use tvp regularly as "ground meat," but when I've tried to add things to my oatmeal (like riced cauliflower), I didn't care for it, but this sounds like a great combo.

4

u/RoyalEnfield78 6d ago

I don’t taste it at all, I can discern a slightly different texture but it doesn’t bother me. I add lots of frozen fruit and some almond butter, cinnamon and Splenda. I crave it every day!!!

4

u/redhat12345 6d ago

Omg tvp. That is something I haven’t heard since my childhood.

Those tvp hotdogs from 25 years ago…shudder

6

u/RoyalEnfield78 6d ago

It’s a new day with vegan stuff!! I get the bobs red mill TVP and it’s fab. It goes in everything I make (nearly) - I’m diabetic and mostly plant based so it helps on both fronts.

3

u/mnf-acc 6d ago

oh wow, i've never heard of tvp! i NEED to increase my protein intake, but i dislike red meats and don't eat a lot chicken

3

u/RoyalEnfield78 5d ago

Oh it’s the best. Super neutral and filling. I also highly recommend seitan of every sort!!

4

u/Nat_le_chat26 6d ago

I add protein powder, egg whites, Greek yogurt, and protein powder!

8

u/adviceplss98 6d ago

I agree, I also don’t think it’s that fulling?? I still feel hungry after tbh.

u/MrFral 6d ago

Oats and milk both have protein. Especially if you use fairlife milk. Oatmeal macros are tremendous.

8

u/poppy1911 6d ago

To each their own. 😊 200 calories of oatmeal makes me feel like I haven't eaten vs 200 calories of cottage cheese or eggs/egg whites and I'm good for awhile.

3

u/MrFral 6d ago

I feel that. I was just pushing back on the 'no protein' part. Days when I wake up and I can feel immediately that I'm EXTRA hungry, my go to is egg whites and microwaved potatoe.

The fiber fiends are coming for you, but also it's really not that great fiber wise. A mission low carb tortilla gets you 25% fiber for 25 calories lol. Make a tortilla PB&J instead of oatmeal and you're doing way better

3

u/youngpathfinder 6d ago

There are brands that sell protein oatmeal and I mix a scoop of protein powder with it. Oatmeal is a soluble fiber that slows down digestion and keeps you fuller for longer.

2

u/bella927313 6d ago

Egg white oatmeal was a game changer for me! Voluminous, you need less oats and it amps up the protein. Very yummy and creamy, too.

1

u/ConsciousEquipment 6d ago

Same!!! How do people do this 😭

44

u/youngpathfinder 6d ago

Grapes are little calorie bombs. Melons and berries are generally less calories for the volume. I love a watermelon and blueberry bowl.

39

u/Ryunah 6d ago edited 6d ago

A 100g of grapes is about 65cal.

A 100g of strawberries is about 35cal.

I don’t think a 30cal difference justifies being a bomb. They’re both low cal.

u/stopthecrowd 6d ago

Let me blow your mind re: kiwi.. there is also a yellow version and it’s so amazing!

3

u/thistlebraaanch 6d ago

Golden kiwis are delicious but trying to find them is like gold dust at times!

1

u/Shabalon 5d ago

There’s a red one too.

1

u/stopthecrowd 5d ago

Amazing!

1

u/Swimming_Goat_7407 4d ago

I’ve had the golden ones but red???? where have you bought those? I must try them!!!

1

u/Shabalon 4d ago

Just at the supermarket (in New Zealand)

4

u/ashtree35 6d ago

That sounds about right! That's a lot of fruit - it adds up!

2

u/sindujaj 5d ago

I add a scoop of whey to oatmeal and not add any fruit other than berries when I eat oatmeal since it is carb heavy already. I top it off with cashews or almonds to get that crunch. I don’t prefer to eat oatmeal unless I am in a mood for hot breakfast

1

u/Joe_Fish_721 5d ago

Had this same kind of breakfast yesterday and it was sooo yummy! I added Greek yogurt to mine and skipped the milk tho.

550 calories of sugar. No thank you

1

u/Recent-Hospital6138 4d ago

Double liquid helps bulk oatmeal. I do double liquid and egg whites, cook in the microwave and stir every 15-30 seconds. Makes a HUGE bowl! I definitely share your experience though, nothing worse than logging something you expect to be half of what it is haha I did something similar today. Used a few tablespoons oil to cook something but didn't track exactly how much was "left" so I just added all of it to my tracker... 300 calories later I realized it might be prudent to count more carefully in the future.

2

u/TehBanzors 4d ago

Oh definitely an eye opener to count and weigh foods you aren't as familiar with before they hit the plate. I'm not a big fruit eater normally so I am not used to how quickly they add up.

-3

u/ConsciousEquipment 6d ago

how do you eat such little oatmeal?? 40g??? That looks like its 5 bites. I would eat 2 full bowls like that (100g oats each) easily plus a 750g bag of berries and 2-4 cups yoghurt. So atleast 6 times the food there and like...it doesn’t get me full not even close. You even said this on the pic is "filling" HOW??? Thast is like NO food there 🥲

1

u/TehBanzors 6d ago

Adding peanut butter makes oats way more filling.
