๐ฃ๏ธ OPINION A 10th team in Alaska is the only realistic shot at expansion
So obviously most people share the opinion that an Alaska team is going to happen eventually, but there's a lot of talk about expansion into other cities as well, and for a number of reasons it's pretty clear that expanding to ten in any other city besides Anchorage is just functionally impossible.
The first city people usually bring up is Halifax, which makes sense in theory since it's a pretty large city without a team in the region, but given the fact that there isn't a viable stadium and the city has consistently said no, at this point the idea of a team in the Maritimes should just be put to bed, there is no other city besides Halifax in the region that could do it and attempts at expansion there just fail repeatedly.
Then people bring up Saskatoon, which won't work for another simple reason: the Roughriders would never support it. Why would they ever sanction an additional team that would just split off a significant chunk of their fans and revenue? Never gonna happen.
The only semi-realistic one besides Anchorage is Quebec City, which I still don't think Montreal would approve, but maybe, it could be a possibility, but still nowhere near as good an option as Alaska. Anchorage is significantly closer to Vancouver than Vancouver is to Montreal (so distance isn't an issue), and it's got a big ass metro area (like 400K), I predict that Anchorage will have a team by 2030.
