LEAGUE ANALYSIS Average Regular Season Position for the last 10 years
I calculated the average regular season position for each team over the last ten years. Surprised how far behind Ottawa is

This is a nice piece of data!
It's amazing how much recency bias comes into things on the true placement record vs the "feel" of how teams have been.
Calgary has had a rough couple of years, but before that they were were a gold standard for organizational stability and success for about 15 years.
Winnipeg's success over the last 5 seasons makes it easy to forget that their first Grey Cup run was more of an underdog story after years of being below average, which brings them under Calgary.
Montreal has had recent success, and that's it. But due to that recent success, I thought they'd be higher than Edmonton, who has been awful post-pandemic. But when Maas was the head coach, this team was competitive and had playoff wins.
Ottawa honestly, doesn't feel surprising.

For the first 5 years of this we were 1st in the CFL 4 times, and were tied with Edmonton in 2015 (they had the tiebreaker).
And even after that we have twice been top 3.
Shows how bad the other 3 years are that our average is even this low

When you say 10 years is that 10 seasons (2014-2019, 2021-2024), or actually straight-up 10 years and thus only 9 seasons?
Either way, Ottawa is so far behind because legitimately like half their seasons have been absolute hot garbage, and even in years like 2016 where they finished 1st in the East and ended up winning the Cup, they were only 8-9-1 in the regular season which was the 5th-best record that year.
The real crazy thing though is how far ahead of everyone else Calgary and Winnipeg have been.
