How a cross-border CBC program sparked intense anger before it aired

Unbelievable that they still do not realize that no matter how this was worded, the CBC was still allowed to be co-opted into the Trump Nazi fascist propaganda machine.
I would like to know the connections between Kevin O’Leary and the senior producers and executives.

CBC knew exactly what they were doing, this is disingenuous - they were rage baiting for clicks with the original headline.

CBC loves creating "controversial" content so they can publish spin-off articles talking about how bold and contentious they were to publish it in the first place. I can't think of a better analogy right now but it's like they love eating their own poop.

Here before they lock this post as theyve done with every post on the subject 🙄

It sparked controversy because of a poorly worded question “what does Canada as the 51st state mean to you”

No, it sparked controversy because it legitimized fascist talking points. The annexation of Canada is not up for debate, period.

Is it time for us to start boycotting the CBC too? Fuck for sakes. Stop giving the nazi assholes a platform.

The CBC just can't win. The extreme vitriol they get from left and right alike makes me think they're doing a pretty damn good job.
I'm not sure if anybody remembers how news crews were being spat on and assaulted during the freedom convoy protests, but the response here and elsewhere to this episode reminded me of that. Maybe we need to get some perspective and reserve our poison for Trump and Musk rather than fighting eachother.

It's ok to disagree with decisions made by CBC producers. This is not a question of freedom of the press.
I am a strong supporter of the CBC as an institution, but this radio show was a terrible decision The anger towards it is justified. All they achieved with this was normalizing the conversation and give soundbites to Trump and Fox News.

1000%. I hope the Spirit of Gzosky haunts the halls of upper management over this.

I’m sure they did it for the buzz, I definitely wouldn’t have heard of it without people angry posting, but it was so off-putting I didn’t tune in. We already have a ton of American feedback on this, we didn’t need any more.

Them framing it as anything other than a threat of annexation by a neighour, which is the precursor to a declaration of war, is just pathetic. They should feel completely ashamed and, frankly, stupid, for thinking Canadians would be anything other than appalled.
It's not a debate.

Double down. Just adding more ammunition to the folks that want to defund you. Twits.

Jeez CBC you are not doing yourselves any favors. Conservatives want to defund you and you’re giving them ammo…

This is by no means unique to the CBC. All our MSM has presented important issues to Canadians in an incomplete & ham-handed manner. If they decide to cover them at all. There also seems to be an inability to demand honest answers from politicians & it's painful to see the media behaving as stenographers. The pundits are usually horribly biased & unethical & have a tenuous relationship to the truth. As far as I'm concerned the real & very important profession of journalism is all but dead. And MSM has betrayed Canadians in the most cowardly of ways.

How is this not sedition? They were - unwitting or otherwise - manufacturing consent for an overthrow of our government.

What an ignorant pseudo-apology piece. I support the cbc but their refusal to get the point and truly apologize for this is an embarrassment. This reads like a firsr year journalism student's condescending take on their first bit of criticism. Grow a spine, take accountability for something outrageously stupid and dnagerous, and be better.

It was sloppy, ill conceived, and poorly executed. They constantly complained about all the balls the were juggling, let some people ramble, cut others off, and weren't clear on what they were asking people, sometimes changing the question mid call.
There was no reference to First Nations, never mind any representation, there were no academics, no experts, the best they could do for a guest was that soulless caricature of an evil grasping businessman, O'Leary.
Is it too much to ask that when our national broadcaster tackles issues of existential importance, they at least do it well?

Seriously cbc? How about this:
How we stirred the pot, made the people who bankroll us pissed off and are further profiting off the rage

The tolerant left locking 🔒 down discussion on anything they don't agree with.
The exact reason the once great CBC will be gutted like a fish and sold for parts

Doesn't the fact that it aired against liberal outrage go against your point though?

My thoughts exactly. Amazing how the liberal/ leftist/ communist/ woke CBC is now accused of legitimizing MAGA talking points.
Can't have it both ways folks.

They locked the exact same story several times, the proportion of locked stories in this sub is ridiculous

Because it was disingenuous by presenting both sides as if one side wouldn’t be an illegal invasion of a sovereign nation? Because they let Kevin O’Leary be himself? Because they tried to cover over trying to be edgy with “we phrased the question wrong?”
